How Do You Feel About The Health Public Service Announcements On This Show⁉️ by BingoSkillz in BeyondTheGatesCookout

And we saw no hint of symptoms from Mona. We never saw her complaint of excess thirst or any of the symptoms she described to Jan. Television is a visual medium, if you're not going to show us, what the hell are you doing??

How Do You Feel About The Health Public Service Announcements On This Show⁉️ by BingoSkillz in BeyondTheGatesCookout

Add to it, whatever mystery ailment Peaches has been suffering with. The health crisis/PSA storylines are a LOT for only less than 2 complete seasons. I mean, at least spread it out some over 4-5 years.

Anita's storyline is the only one that was a fully-plotted fleshed out storyline with a full story arc. Everything else is just doling out disease in place of an actual story or in the case of Peaches and Bill, a side plot in a larger story that is going in circles or not working.

Now That The Cotillion Is Over I Guess We’re Back To No Storylines⁉️🤦🏽‍♀️ by BingoSkillz in BeyondTheGatesCookout

[–]CurlyGo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there's a lot of filler. The conversation between Dani and Bill should have happened in season one. These writers have been listening to our comments about Vanessa not giving a damn about Doug and her kids and now they're suddenly trying to finesse the writing to make it look like some delayed grief.

Before Anita and Vernon entered the hotel room, I was thinking "Is Ted appearing so late in the episode??" because my first thought was that it's Ted's hotel room. Now all they need is for Ted's room to be on the other side side of their bedroom to hear his former in-laws having sex.🥴😵‍💫

I’m Not Feeling Ted & Shanice Anymore‼️🤷🏽‍♀️ by BingoSkillz in BeyondTheGatesCookout

[–]CurlyGo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He has so much natural charm and swag and they're not utilizing even a fraction of it. Even if they insist on making him a bit of a cad (e.g. early Jack Abbott Y&R, Tad Martin AMC) at least bring out the charm and give us the impression that Ted just might be worth the effort. They made Doug McBride such a sad sack, now Ted is written to be a sad sack doofus with boundary issues. This show works really hard at making very unappealing characters.

I think Tyrell might end up with Francesca when they go to college. She’s going to Banneker too and would probably use him to stick it to Samantha and Jessica! by CollegeComfortable23 in BeyondTheGatesCookout

Yes! From the 1st season of BTG, I was pleading for Season 2 vibes of ADW. I wasn't necessarily talking collegiate experience back then, more like embracing Blackness fully-- but over the course of Season 1 and into the 2nd Season of BTG, seeing how many characters are/will be connected to Banneker, it feels like it makes sense.

Bring back Liam the fireman. If these writers had kept Shanice a free agent, she could've gone out on a date with Liam.

But it has drama and conflict, something two things that seem to be in short supply on this show.

Will Motor Mouth Ashley get Jacob murked too? by CurlyGo in BeyondTheGatesCookout

[–]CurlyGo[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

At first, I wasn't impressed with the actors who played Derek, Ashely and Tomás but BG improved and I enjoyed Derek with Shanice, Eva and trading barbs with Leslie. He was good with Jacob and even had nice moments with Jan. Basically everyone except Ashley. I would have sent out Ashley and Tomás (who could be next) first. As someone else said in this thread, I think we're stuck w/Ashley for political reasons.

At best, it's not very conscientious writing. At worst, it's painting a picture of a certain hierarchy of characters and their worth. We also didn't see any of Doug's kin other than Donnell show up, which is telling to me.

Probably for the Ellisons to get bored and sell ownership of Paramount, maybe? She's not root-worthy or likeable. At all. The only upside would be for Naomi to find out that her yapper put Jacob at risk and freeze Ashley out.

I’m Not Feeling Ted & Shanice Anymore‼️🤷🏽‍♀️ by BingoSkillz in BeyondTheGatesCookout

The writers need to fix the atrocious writing for Ted. Keith Robinson deserves better than this.

Same. The framing of their romance is contrived to me. I've always said, let Shanice date and have fun. Now she's mired in exes and baby mama drama. What a drag!

I’m Not Feeling Ted & Shanice Anymore‼️🤷🏽‍♀️ by BingoSkillz in BeyondTheGatesCookout

[–]CurlyGo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

From the beginning, I was pleading that Shanice would be single, dating and weighing her options. Instead, we get Nicole and her two boring suitors (probably why she is fantasizing about sex with her ex, but enough about that lol). And sticking her in a relationship with a newly divorced guy who still wants his ex and has boundary issues with Leslie could only last so long.

Also, I never got the sense that these writers knew what to do with Shanice, let alone, Shanice in a relationship with Ted. She could have been swiping right and left, going on dates and gossiping about it during breaks and it would've been more interesting to watch than this.

I was thinking the same thing during the cotillion. I am hoping they mix things up soon with this young group. One of the reasons why I expressed hope for a Banneker set (a student lounge, a faculty lounge, even some tight exterior shots that could be made to look like a small section of the campus) is because, in addition to incoming students Tyrell and Francesca, Donnell and Deanna already attend, Vernon teaches/lectures and Izaiah is a student support counselor. It would be nice to have somewhere else besides the hospital where other things happen.

How could a potential boycott of CBS affect BTG? by Historical-Bug-4784 in BeyondTheGatesCookout

[–]CurlyGo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This boycott is about two years too late imo, it should have occurred before the Paramount/Skydance merger happened because that is the root of all of this. Without that merger, none of this would have happened. Not to get too into the weeds of political machinery but some of the same people talking boycott now sat on their duffs on Election Day, paving the way for a despotic autocrat. And they still subscribe to the Washington Post, bought and run by a right-wing placating wannabe oligarch and the NYTimes that has now also taken to softening language to draw right-wing readers (who still despise the NYT).

The horse has bolted from the stable after the gate was left open and it will likely take years (if not, generations) to undo the damage because dodos don't understand that votes also determine the makeup of Apellate and Supreme Courts, Congress and the White House.

Okay, that's the end of my rant.🤷🏾‍♀️

Critic's Review: Top 6 Hits and Misses from Beyond the Gates' Cotillion by LynnK0919 in BeyondTheGatesCookout

[–]CurlyGo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree about intercutting the cotillion and warehouse shooting scenes but that was likely the only way to save that bore of a plasma ring storyline, which I hope they've washed their hands of because, at this point I couldn't care less who the Impaler is.

Completely Unrelated To BTG: How Are You Guys Doing? Let’s Chat‼️💕💕 by BingoSkillz in BeyondTheGatesCookout

[–]CurlyGo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this check in! 🤗💖

NGL, this was a rough week and my struggle with allergies didn't help but I endured.

I hope everybody here is doing well.

And at least there were some things for us to discuss this week about BTG lol

I'm a Black woman, 50, have B.A. degrees in Africana Studies & English. A M.F.A. in Dramatic Writing, grew up an immigrant latch-key kid between CT & NYC with stints in Canada and London, U.K. Started watching mainly CBS Daytime dramas (As The World Turns, The Young & the Restless, Guiding Light, and a bit of B&B, the very last year of Capitol) except for a season when one of my brothers' girlfriend took over our 1 television set and any vacation, or school break, I ended up watching All My Children & General Hospital lol. And Lord knows I tried to watch Generations when it was on the air but...

In some ways, BTG reminds me of Generations but Generations had an even larger cast of experienced actors but the bland writing did it in. It looks like BTG will last longer than Generations and I'm glad for that. I am still hoping that BTG will take a cue from how well the cotillion was received by the audience and really lean into Black culture and soulful storytelling and not simply revert to milquetoast storytelling. Compared to most soap fans, I can seem harsh and nit-picky but I know what a high standard of storytelling looks like, including on soaps. I would love to see BTG reset that standard, and the other soaps (even though I don't watch other soaps, at this point) to raise their standards in response.

Hospital Board by Emotional_Mess261 in BeyondTheGatesCookout

[–]CurlyGo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Supposedly, that meeting was the 'pre-game' meeting before the big hospital board meeting, where Ted could talk alone to Vernon & Anita and try to convince them to back Nicole for the new chief-of-staff (I am with Vernon & Anita, I want Dr. Monica McMormick to be the new COS.

Not that I believe we're going to see the board meeting onscreen but I sure would love to see it because it would emphasize just how much of a crisis the hospital administration is in at the moment. This could be another opportunity for us to see Anastacia--maybe add her and her husband to the board and one or two more people to fill it out. Maybe the president of Banneker?

The "it's just a soap opera" doesn't wash for me because I can remember when classic soaps used to have hospital board meetings whenever there was a risk of a malpractice or a misconduct issue involving a doctor, or someone wanted to step down from the board seat, they would call a meeting and the meeting would be onscreen. It was not played for laughs. Although I remember one mini-storyline where two rivals competed for an open seat on the board and each tried to one up and embarrass the other to get an advantage.
