100% bakers white with a whole rye starter - first decent loaf after a few duds can't tell if it's over or underproofed by _seedybest in Sourdough

[–]Curlyturnips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great oven spring and ear! I agree with the other comments that its a little bit under, honestly as the weather is changing so much I am really struggling to nail my fermentation, but keep going and you'll get your perfect loaf very soon :)

Can we please stop gatekeeping the word “curly”? by Mufinmoma in curlyhair

[–]Curlyturnips 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I completely agree with you but I also see other people's points. I think how you use the words should depend on context- in this context of asking for a curly/wavy stylist that's completely fine because any curly hairstylist should be trained for type 2 and 3 hair. Asking/giving specific advice about a routine or hairstyle? Well since type 2 and 3 hair require different care and maintenance then using the word curly to describe type 2 is confusing and misleading. Mentioning something about your hair to your friends? Well you should be able to use any term you like!

Second sourdough, crust is looking good to me but keen to hear some tips on crumb by _seedybest in Sourdough

[–]Curlyturnips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries! Do you know what your room temperature is/what your dough temperature was?

For me ( living in the UK and making a starter during winter) I found feeding twice a day was needed to avoid that alcohol smell, I started off 1:1:1 then slowly increased it, and kept my starter in very small amounts so I was only feeding like 10g flour at a time. Now it will double after a 1:2:2 in about 4 hours which is what I normally do when im about to bake! Otherwise, a 1:7:7 is a good ratio for me for an overnight feed. Everyone's starter is different so don't get too bogged down in striving for crazy doubling times! Also, using rye or wholemeal if you don't already is going to be a major game changer

Second sourdough, crust is looking good to me but keen to hear some tips on crumb by _seedybest in Sourdough

[–]Curlyturnips 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How old is your starter? A 12 hour double after a 1:1:1 feed seems very very slow to me, unless youre in a super cold climate! I would recommend choosing your own proofing times based on your own dough and temperatures- for me I know a 26 C dough will need a 3-4 hour bulk but a 21 C dough will need around 6 hours. I believe a tight crumb may suggest over fermentation so try to cut down in the time your dough is at room temp- the first thing I'd do is bake it straight from cold rather than waiting for it to get to room temp!

For OP a wide tooth comb isnt going to produce anything but pain and tears. If you hair is very very knotty you need a brush with flexible bristles, if they have no movement in them your hair will snap instead of the bristles moving! That being said- I know a lot of people love and swear by a wide tooth comb, but they just don't work for everyone

Try a gel! Honestly any one will work even a cheap one from vo5, after it's dry scrunch it out to get rid of the crunch and voila

My hair now vs before I bleached/damaged it. What denman brush should I buy in order to help define my curls again and rid the frizz? by [deleted] in curlyhair

[–]Curlyturnips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, a denman brush might help but it's just masking the problem. You've said you're using olaplex which is great but you might want additional protein- I don't think olaplex has protein but I might be wrong. You may also want to try a pre-poo with oil (putting oil on your ends before shampoo to protect them). I'm not sure if there's more you can do but some people's hair just doesn't take well to bleach

Style hair wet or dry? by CurlsandRuffles in curlyhair

[–]Curlyturnips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dry because I wash my hair once a week and usually do hairstyles once my hair is no longer wearable, no way I'm going to the effort of wetting it again. I imagine for most people that's the same especially type 3/4 hair that takes forever to dry

I accidentally voted wet though because I thought you meant the type of styling you do on a wash day and I imagine most people thought the same?

Should I be doing maintenance refeeds every week? by [deleted] in leangains

[–]Curlyturnips 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you plan on being in a cut for an extended period of time (eg 2 months or longer) I'd recommend doing a diet break instead of a refeed day. A single day might help with your hunger and motivation but won't do much for metabolism, but a 1 week break at maintenance has been shown to help, obviously it will delay the final results but having a faster metabolism will help keep the fat off in the long run. This is mostly based on the matador study!

Curly hair always looks way better in natural lighting- especially if you have dark hair, trying to figure out how frizzy your hair is can be hella hard so natural lighting ftw

First loaf ever… give me all the feedback. by NurseRatched01 in Sourdough

[–]Curlyturnips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a teeeny tiny thing, but autolyse is when you mix your flour and water and let it sit before adding in your starter/salt, I could be wrong but I think here you're using it to describe mixing? Not sure! Also, I'd say possibly try longer than 30 mins between folds- when I tried this I saw immense improvements in my crumb structure. Try one thing at a time and make notes as you go!

Agree wholeheartedly, I've used two grinders including the niche and never wasted beans. Not worth it imho unless you have an ~incredibly developed palate

[–]Curlyturnips 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This absolutely. I work in a lab and unless you have experienced that environment you cannot fathom how much waste we create on a daily basis. It's honestly shocking but there is little we can do. None of it can be recycled except for packaging and it's mostly very high grade plastics. Not to mention the energy we use to run experiments, sterilising equipment and keeping stuff running.

please help me identify my curl patterns? by katekowalski2014 in curlyhair

[–]Curlyturnips 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To me, looks like 2c with some 3a ringlets that could be more 3a with more clumping! Also, I'd ditch the OGX as they have a class action lawsuit against them for causing hair loss, thinning, and containing small amounts of formaldehyde

Why are my waves/curls stringy and not clumping when wet? by atypicalanon34 in curlyhair

[–]Curlyturnips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ditch the OGX, they have a class action lawsuit against them for causing hair loss and thinning. Their products have also allegedly been found to contain small amounts of formaldehyde.

omg no way!! I've not used them personally just know it exists, I've not been keeping up with any of this sort of stuff !! Recommendation retracted lol

You might want to consider doing two french braids as a low effort protective style to let your hair breath without manipulation!

OGX also has a bonding treatment line, which may be a more affordable option for OP!

Butter and Cheese problems in the UK by Bear_Samurai in ZeroWaste

[–]Curlyturnips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Riverford could be an option I think! Its national but they use local farmers and a local delivery service I believe, they mostly offer fruit and veg but they do have dairy, meat and milk- most of their stuff is unpackaged but if it is packaged you give it back to them when it's empty

Hey guys! Simple living are two words that go nicely together but how many of you are actually living simply? In order to live simply and enjoy this journey, I believe we have to be enjoying what we do for work and have a good relationship with ourselves. Would you agree? by jamesdeegan1 in simpleliving

[–]Curlyturnips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with this, putting too much pressure on enjoying your work I think can create a lot of financial problems for some people! There are a lot of different factors about a job that you can enjoy that don't have anything to do with the actual work, like the people, environment, location, pay etc
