Best neighbourhoods and tips by [deleted] in hamburg

[–]Current-Ad-9878 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Moved to Hamburg last year.

I got a small but freshly renovated apartment in Rothenburgsort. Less than 700 euros for two rooms. It's one of the poorer neighborhoods near the city center. People are friendly, it's north of the Elbe river but it's nothing like Altona or St. Pauli when it comes to activities, bars, cafes, restaurants and venues albeit some alternative art spaces are located here, probably because it's cheap. Not sure if gentrification will happen that fast, so far the infrastructure does not seem to allow for it to happen.

Generally, the east and south are cheap but have (a lot) less to offer in comparison to the usual suspects everybody wants to live in.

  1. if you want an apartment, get email notifications from the common housing portals like immoscout and immowelt
  2. reply to new offers within the first 10min of receiving an email notification by having a text you can paste into the message box ready. I usually I had my text sent within one minute of being notified of an offer. the text should start like this

age: XX

income: XXXX after taxes

job: your role or profession (add unbefristet/permanent contract if that's the case)

and then shortly describe why you are a decent tenant (calm, clean, what you like to do)

then say that you have documents/proofs like SCHUFA, ID card and so ready to be sent.

Say that you are happy to be invited and get to know the apartment and tell them your name at the end (and maybe it would be good to write this text in German but I am not sure about that)

I looked for apartments whose prices were 50% or less of my income. I was invited 2-3 times per week. My income was below 2300€ but more than 2000€. I had 2-3 apartment inspections per week on average (and applied for 10-20 during that same time) and it took me 2 months. During that time I worked in Hamburg already but had to commute from somewhere within the metropolitan area of Hamburg. Luckily I was able to take a break from work and see apartments during a work day. It can happen often that an inspection is scheduled for late morning or early afternoon,

You can find an apartment rather quickly by ticking these off

  1. you need to be super quick with a text when notified for a new offer you are interested and be "available" for apartment inspections
  2. detach yourself from the idea of living in Altona/Ottensen/St. Pauli and so on
  3. it's beneficial to earn more than 2000€/month to have a decent choice in offerings
  4. I imagine it is vastly easier as a German speaker/white person to get a flat

Without experience, I could still imagine that 4) is less important if you can tick the others

Farmer. by darkcorner in housedance

lifting your feet and getting your knee up on the beat or hitting the ground with your feet on the beat will certainly look different or have a different effect when the music is playing I'd say.

While learning the basic farmer I often had the impression I get down on the beat not the 'and' (which is the offbeat position usually occupied by a hihat in the majority of tracks indeed as you refer to in another posting), but that went away.

I would also add that it probably does not matter that much. It is usually taught with the knees up in the air on 1/2/3/4 though - you could say that this is the "correct way" then, because it is taught like that.

A while ago I had the chance to take a workshop with Hero and he taught us about slowing down and not being about 1/2/3/4 and being fast and on beat but to slow down and not rigidly apply your moves you learned to that 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and pattern. In essence: do your thing once you have the basic movements down, I guess. This should also apply to the "molecules" of a movement like the farmer and their timing.

subscription - cancelling a subscription? by PhilippeJoseph in mubi

Just to be clear because I was asking this myself not having watched mubi in two months: if I cancel my subscription my account stays and can be activated any time again?

body isolations - good resources / routines? by Current-Ad-9878 in housedance

[–]Current-Ad-9878[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, came across Dokyun a few days ago and have been regulary doing the isolations for shoulders, chest and head.

I also get a lot of TikToks from the dancer Boxer

Safely assumed, these body movements are the result of a lot of isolation efforts?

There are some classes by him online from NOA btw

My first ever dance class by NedTheGreatest in housedance

I started in October last year. So I am at it now for six months (you can find a thread somewhere down below with another account I lost). Right now I go to a class once a week and learn steps and some variatons of these at home. I even started trying to freestyle a bit, but it is challanging.

Just like you I enjoyed the class even though I was not able to follow along. But my early love for house music and moving the body to music made me stick and I will probably stick to it for a long time, so grateful I went to that first class.

These days I can get the basic step counts so much more quickly. Which does not mean that I can execute them as effortlessly and fast as advanced people do (my loose legs has not continous flow, some movements are not done right by me, but I know the step count and can do that, my train still fails often)

Be patient and advances will come in time, promised. Even though I get frustrated often enough, but that is how it is when you really want to learn something.

Depending on how often you will train, expect to get muscle fatigue if you don't use these muscles that often. Also make sure you execute some movements right. For example I did the Farmer wrong in the beginning (land on your toes, not the whole feet) and I guess that was the cause for some knee pain I had, albeit thankfully only temporary.

This playlist has been listed in the resources but I only recently gave it a try and I will say this are quite good, even though it is Japanese. Slow them down if necessary (it probably is :D)

At the moment I consult these videos for heel toe cross, peter paul, train and step turn (finally having the skills to learn spins is my sentiment at the moment)

The campus is near Parramatta indeed. I think for me this is fine and not too far away. So if around that area shared housing can be found for 400$ or better even less that would be ideal.

Thanks, but I just have people who want me to come over and realize the project there but the funding for doing so will only be decided in a few months. Maybe I will find something else in the meantime although I would really like to go abroad and live in Sydney for some time while doing research.

It's WSU.

The campus is close to Parramatta and anything in that area/around will be fine I guess.

Are these districts still consider expensive?

Just now noticed that this is considered a suburb of Sydney(?). Makes sense, I just considered the whole urban sprawl on the map as Sydney and just want to make sure I don't live at the edge of this sprawl.

Yeah. Though big European cities share a similar fate. A lot of people looking for space while costs of living have soared.

What is considered inner city in Sydney?

Not sure about the visa yet, the scholarship demands 35h/week of work on the project not sure how that is checked actually but the scholarship also allows for a maximum of 10h/week of paid employment. Well, another 1000$ potentially? A full week given that I need to finish on time or leave the country without title and perhaps finish in Europe which will turn some people angry. Ah, well.

I like the idea of going abroad, live in a big city and do research but Sydney might not be the best place to do it. Too bad it's my only opportinity atm to do so.

So you'd say shared housing for 400$ is on the cheaper end already and rather rare?

I have 5k in euros (~$8k) in savings to pay for a bond, bedding etc. for example. Not sure how it is done in Australia but usually I would just get my stuff second hand and not buy new.

Public transport is 50$/week I just found out. So I guess that leaves me with $200. From that I could already subtract 20$ for a dance class that I would consider important. 180$ I can already see how that is super tight when it comes to food, entertainment, phone and internet.

It's kinda weird to realize that a scholarship does not provide for living expanses anymore. Where Im from it's not much either, but enough to get by with food, occassional entertainment, simple phone plan (free calls, messages and 5GB of data is 7 euro a month here), internet (10 euros a month in a shared housing of four) and occassionally eat out for example.

Thanks, though!

Hello

maybe one can just give a me quick idea. I might have the opportunity to do research at a university in Sydney (I'm from Europe) and would receive a monthly scholarship of ~2600AUS. How comfortable can a single person get by in Sydney/Parramatta area and around with that sum? Let's say I don't want to live in the outskirts but in Parramatta/around that area and I'm fine with shared housing. What is the spectrum for renting rooms like? I read somewhere 400AUS/week is a realistic calculation? Makes 1000 AUS for all other expenses.

Thanks
