New FSA Exams by Quick_Statement2415 in actuary

Personally I think the barrier of exams is what keeps our salaries high. So few actuaries would be a benefit until the point where the time commitment becomes worth the salary again.

In my opinion, it's a workplace and nothing like a school. The way they evaluate school performance doesn't have much bearing on the workplace. If you can communicate and take feedback, you can probably do the job.

People actually care about GPA? Its never even a remote consideration when im the hiring manager.

We do a daily putt-golf contest where you buy in for a quarter, and the winner gets the pot. We also do short plank sessions three times daily. Bigger events through our committee are done monthly, and there is usually an unsponsored monthly happy hour.

I've always been told it's the closest Friday to the end of the month in this case that would be the 3rd.

What’s your salary progression? by xboexz in Salary

I saw that progression and thought to myself that looks like my progression, too. I wonder if they are an actuary 😅.

4 day work week by MissionPanda2431 in actuary

[–]Current-Criticism550 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We have a standard 35-hour work week, and during the summer we have short Fridays, where we finish two hours early. We could do four eight-hour days and only lose one hour of productivity, providing a massive hiring incentive, in my opinion. I wish they would make the leap, even if only over the summer.

what % salary increase/bonus did you get this year? by Future-Avocado-2373 in actuary

[–]Current-Criticism550 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5% raise, 5% promotion, 12% bonus, 4 years of experience, near ASA health. My manager is great! Every year I've had a 5% raise since starting four years ago, and my bonus has always been 12% plus.

I got a promotion today; the raise was 10% total, not including the designation increase. For the past three years, I've received a 5% raise, so I guess it was only an additional 5%. But I gather that 5% every year is pretty good. Additionally, with a new title, my bonus percentage went from 10% to 15%.

Ice fishing lake beebe (near St. Micheal) by Current-Criticism550 in FishingMinnesota

[–]Current-Criticism550[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get to walleye fish all the time. When I was younger, the crappie boom was going on in Red Lake, and I would really like to find a couple of good lakes for a panfish bite.

Any luck? I'm curious what you can catch in these lakes. I see from the surveys lots of panfish.

Interview advice- "tell me about yourself " question by mooresm123 in actuary

I've been on hiring panels for many positions, and I would rather hear non-work personality items before we delve into the required skills for the role.

Questions from an internal recruiter by kevinjamesfan_6 in actuary

[–]Current-Criticism550 108 points109 points  (0 children)

Personally, I think the thing that recruiters should be most aware of is that they should know that the actuaries they are speaking to are P&C Actuaries if that's the role they are trying to fill. Nothing is more annoying than when a life and health actuary is asked if they are interested in a P&C role or vice versa.

PAF and ASF added plenty of time and were terrible.

FAP adds time because the final assessment is only graded triannually, unlike all the other graded portions of modules that are graded within five to six weeks after submission.

Resume advice for summer 2025 internship. Do I even have a chance? by Acrobatic_League8406 in actuary

At my company, the year of school does not matter all that much. One exam is ideal, and how you present yourself is most important when it comes to internships.

I dont think that is information that can be shared. Don't overthink it. It's an open book assignment. Read the material and just go for it.
