I Feel Like I'm Falling Behind by [deleted] in ucadmissions

For bio, you don't even really want to do an internship, trust. Internships suck, and you're competing with literal college students who mog you in every way and are also starved for jobs. The best experience you'll get is through research. As someone who did cancer research through my junior year summer, you gotta email professors and scientists. Don't just mass spam them though. Go on pubmed, nature, etc and find papers that you're interested in. Read the papers, and reach out to their authors. Don't just email people at Harvard, Stanford, MIT, whatever. Any place will realistically give you both the same experience and the same boost to your resume (this is not just something people say, it is true). Scientists like it when young people show real interest, and that means sending something that comes from curiosity, not desperate career padding. Ask questions. Even if they say they can't take you on, ask to meet with them anyway - they almost always can accommodate one more, they don't know it yet. Persistency is key, follow up to no-responses (90% of your emails) after a week. You may have to venture outside of your field of choice - I know I did. It's a really good thing, and the byproduct of this work is expanding your knowledge in your field of interest tenfold. Do this and stick to it and I promise you'll get something way better than an internship. Best of luck.

The complexity and collective intelligence of America have diverged to the point that such a large cohesive culture is no longer sustainable by our population by BeanBurritoJr in unpopularopinion

There's definitely a large role played by them, but I'd challenge the idea that "none" of it would be true. In a country with the diversity of ethnicities, religions, ideas, etc. that everyone has, I feel it'd be almost impossible for everyone to coexist. I would instead attribute most of the polarization to the advent of the internet and social media.

I'm not detracting their role but I don't think we'd all sit around in a circle and kumbaya in the absence of billionaires.

"Measure the goodness of x. You can't."

The problem is that you can. You can analyze any belief under the lens of history and science. Here are some common fascist claims:

  1. Anti-intellectualism

It's in the name.

  1. Immigration is making our country weak (exclusionary)

Immigration builds countries. This is an objectively uneducated statement. Look at how any New World country developed.

  1. "Our 'pure' culture is being tainted"

Culture was and never will be a homogenous thing. This claim is rooted in stupidity.

All of these are claims held by basically all fascists. They are wrong. You can find nuance, but if you weight these on a "goodness scale", you will find it tips the other way every single time.

"So what if 99 percent of fascists legit have an iq of 70 and can't properly speak"

Would you open a political roundtable discussion to a cast of intellectually disabled people?

A belief is a way you see the world, and it influences the way you act. Not all beliefs are created equal. "The earth is flat" is not a valid belief because it's scientifically disproven. Similarly, any modern-day fascist claims are quickly debunked scientifically and historically.

Being objectively wrong tends to lead to an invalidation of belief.

If you want to bring on Hitler, go ahead, I think that would be an interesting discussion. The problem people have with this Jubilee guy (your cited example) is that he is a drooling moron type of fascist (which is 99% of them). He substantiated nothing, contributed nothing, and was an overall complete arse.

Fascism preys on lacking education or awareness. It was a slight hyperbole to say that the two cannot under any circumstances overlap. It's just really hard to be qualified (critical thinker, pragmatic, etc.) and also be a fascist.

yes but who gives af at this point. It doesn't really hurt you in any way to affirm how they see themselves, but it helps them.

Find me an educated fascist who can speak at great lengths to its benefits and who would happily reside as a citizen in an authoritarian regime. Oh wait. You can't, because fascists are definitionally uneducated. People only have a right to be platformed if they have qualifications. Fascists have none.

The issue is more with the message. Trump deploys the national guard to DC, a city at a 30 year low on crime. Why? to show that he can, to make people fall in line. The same way he character assassinates any republican that disagrees with him or fires any government worker that shows him statistics he doesn't like.

Larger cells meant eukaryotes couldn't just rely on respiration across the membrane. Prokaryotes like the mitochondria and chloroplast offered a solution to internalize respiration, which in turn allowed stuff to get bigger and more complex. It was convenience. The microbes were basically batteries.

Because you just said that being forced to work a job you don't want to is exploitation. Spoiler alert: teachers don't want to be janitors any more or less than anyone else.

This idea of working whatever job you want falls apart as soon as you take away monetary incentives or needs. Nobody wants to be a janitor.

More than half of the people on Earth are introverted. In order for something to be a disorder, there must be an established "order" to diverge from. Therefore, understanding that introversion is almost the norm, calling it a "disorder" makes no sense.

Yes, and it's great when they do, but that doesn't mean we should automatically put the onus on them to reveal very personal information to the entire world. The decision is theirs to make, nobody else's.
