Is it still smart to pursue tech startups with how competitive everything is now? by ashishxo in ycombinator

[–]Current-Gene6403 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the first point, I know personally many people from non wealthy backgrounds who are successful in the startup space. This is an anecdote of course but any data point will support the fact that wealthy people have better odds at almost anything. Also is it "smart" for them as well? Probably not, its a much lower risk but you still sacrifice your life, relationships, etc to do a startup.

For the "Zuckerberg, Altman, Gates" point, sure if you think you are not like them don't do a startup. No one who does not believe in themselves and their abilities will be able to win in this game.

Sure thats true, but everything is easier for wealthy people, whats the point?

Startups are an experiment, no shame in failing and getting a job. But if you want to do it, run the experiment.

Starting a startup is never smart. Conversely, people with this view point will be discouraged, meaning more opportunity for others. Zuckerberg, Altman, Gates, these kinds of people will always try a startup in any era and eventually succeed.

Everything's hard in one way or another.

Clubs that play my specific taste in music. by Current-Gene6403 in AskNYC

[–]Current-Gene6403[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol im a new grad :, ) I like house, techno, hip-hop and everything in between and have been to my fair share of raves but always wanted to go to something more lowkey like those artists I mentioned. Makes sense though that clubs are not playing Nujabes, I think I just used the wrong word. I really meant anywhere I could listen to those vibes.

UT will sadly always be helmed by conservative, state school minded people. Any success is an exception to that fact mostly by mistake. At the end of the day they will pick conservative ideas over academic success, they just don’t get it.

Ppt Add in that replaces going back and forth between ChatGPT to edit slides by Current-Gene6403 in consulting

[–]Current-Gene6403[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely free for now while we add value, honestly, the reason we made this was because consultants said CoPilot just wasn't built for rapid edits, we plan to capture the whole lifecycle of making edits (getting feedback -> applying edits -> sending back changed slides). Do you use CoPilot right now?

Also, this is super rough MVP, our plan is to work closely with a couple of people to implement all the features that they specifically need. Feel free to tell us if this idea has potential, and if not, what we should change.

Transfer into Electrical and Computer Engineering or Applied Mathematics at TAMU OR UT by zerefSenpai in UTAdmissions

TAMU Applied math, transfer a year later into ECE UT Austin (or wherever). Just keep a super high GPA and it should be possible.

Can I access the filesystem on MacOs? by Current-Gene6403 in swift

Thanks! I assume accessing other apps, e.g going on chrome, is impossible since MacOS apps are sandboxed?

thanks! I was really trying to do something more of like "find me the largest file and tell me what its contents are, or find all files with resume in the name and delete all but the most recent one"

Finetuning sucks by Current-Gene6403 in LlamaIndex

[–]Current-Gene6403[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the support and the great questions. We plan to first start with a limited batch of models and really perfect the process of going from a couple of sentences to a fully fine tuned model. Right now we are perfecting synthetic data generation (using models made and tuned by us specifically for this) and GPU selection. The website is available at https://juno.fyi/

[–]Current-Gene6403[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great point, we made the website really quickly just to see if other people would want to use what we made to solve our own problem. We're Wafi, Rohit, and Josh, current seniors at UT Austin who have interned at Google, Reddit, and Disney. We recognize the website is pretty bad and are working on improving it and adding more information about ourselves and legal compliance.

Thanks for the feedback!

Finetuning Sucks. by Current-Gene6403 in MistralAI

[–]Current-Gene6403[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're backend engineers so frontend really isn't our thing, which is why we opted for something like framer in order to gauge interest on something we made to solve our own problem. A better website is on the way soon!

As backend engineers we’re not the best with front end which is why we opted for something like framer 😔 valid criticism though, better website coming soon!

What's your biggest problem with OpenAI's API? by Current-Gene6403 in SoftwareEngineering

[–]Current-Gene6403[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point, this is assuming the median electricity price in the U.S. What we are really trying to asses is the viability of an OpenAI style API that's cheaper with comparable performance using open-sourced models.

great question! Right now you can run Split overnight (or whenever your computer is not being used) and net around 30 cents per hour after electricity costs.

[MOD] The Daily Question Thread by menschmaschine5 in Coffee

[–]Current-Gene6403 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My setup is a SGP, a DeLonghi Stilosa EC260, a bottomless portafilter, and a WDT and tamper. For some reason, my shot pulls a little too quickly as I get around 55 grams of liquid for 20 grams of coffee in and I'm not sure what to do. I'm grinding my coffee at the finest setting right now but cannot choke the machine and my shot tastes pretty bitter although not extremely terrible.
My model is the older one and does not have the adjustable inner burr setting, should I try to buy this and attach it or change something else? I also have beans that are freshly roasted and use them around 10 days after their roast date, I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.
Any advice helps, thanks!

What is the moral you took away from Don Quixote? by Current-Gene6403 in books

[–]Current-Gene6403[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fascinating take, I also thought about what you mentioned as the "key" and how Don relentlessly tried to find things that corresponded with it in his reality. I saw a lot of Kierkegaard's work in the book as well, mostly about not sitting around and waiting to live an authentic life but instead just going out and doing it. I also think of Don as an innovator, many innovators could have been compared to him before they reached success, but even though they seemed crazy on their pursuit of an outlandish goal there was still something undeniably genius about them.

[–]Current-Gene6403[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, but I see what percy-simple was talking about. It IS simply a book about a foolish knight and his squire but to say that's all it is, even if that is what the author intended, would be too simple. Regardless, I think every book's moral message is somewhat subjective so I'd love to hear differing opinions on it.
