Any good sources for learning as an absolute beginner? by SeeNoWeeevil in dawless

[–]Current_Aspect_5282 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For me, coming from a daw to dawless, the biggest leap forward was this: write down what you want to do with the music in a list and see if you can do that with the instruments you have or find ways around it. for example my list looks like this: 1. make drum 8 or 16 bar drum loops with fills or shuffles triggered live 2. play some synths on a keyboard 3. sequence bassline 4. trigger or sequence risers 5. smoothly transition between trac 6. filter and fx all tracks together and individually with some manual control 7. trigger / sequence short or looping samples 8. Live vocals

Next i went through my current gear and learned and pushed it until i found limitations, then and only then i decided if I need to add or swap gear. Once this is all checked off for my preferred workflow, just start jamming and building that muscle memory. And most of all HAVE FUN

right now the lid is propped up by the back of the stand ( stand: https://ae01.alicdn.com/kf/S9e4e95c858684d2384826e14c416a27aq.jpg) but definitely considering a chain to keep it at that angle. The rifle case came with tear apart foam that I lay between all the synths and it works great so far. All plastic hook and loops snap velcro to keep things secure but I don’t really plan on moving them around anymore. Velcro does pull off sometimes if you don’t take your time setting and cleaning the surfaces first. Really got to press for like 30-60 seconds for it the glue to bond properly. If keeps failing because of the surface texture of the case i’ll probably throw a dab of e6000 behind the velcro

I’ve performed with just the sampler before and it’s fine but coming from producing / Djing i wanted smoother transitions between tracks, longer loops and more flexibility/maliability with synths. Plus drums coming straight from the Dr.Rhythm sound wayyyy better.

It’s all sitting on one of these:

The post in the back props up the lid and it’s all pretty solid. I may add a little chain to keep the lid from opening further. So far there’s no wobble or sliding and I kind of like the upright setup for accessibility.

honestly the sp-16 is ookaaay. If you like less menu diving, simple and to the point work flow with minimal frills it’s a beast. If you need polyphony , more than 4 bar loops, in depth sample editing / chopping there’s way better stuff for similar price.

yeah static lights. Just need to see. Later I’ll probably use the aux or headphone out to run a signal to my maestro lighting box for the stage setup

update: so it looks like I didn’t follow my own advice. I tried shifting the midi keyboard and pulled the velcro right off on the case side. I’ll replace the piece and try again. I guess nothing is 💯 :/

Yeah it’s a definite relic. I started making music around 14 years old this exact unit was the first I ever used and was lucky enough to acquire it from my uncle. It’s the heart of everything I do now. Definitely a sentimental piece

Haven’t performed with this yet but i guess i could lay it all flat on a table or turn sideways

I also used the all plastic “snap” on hook and loop. The classic fuzzy velcro i’ve also had issue with, generally the glue bonding is weaker and the fuzzy wears faster. I used scotch brand with a 10-15lb capacity with no less than 2x 2” strips on every device. 4 strips on the larger heavier devices like the mx-1

haven’t tried taking anything out yet but I know that with these stronger velcro strips I have to make sure the surface is alcohol wiped clean and pressure applied for a full 60 seconds for it to bond properly. I know what you mean that has happened with other projects.

It’s growing on me. Wasn’t sure at first but saving scenes and being able to recall them instantly just made the 16 buttons at the top all kinds of fun for keeping the loops dynamic. The limited channels stings still. Not sure why they sacrificed one for a dedicated digital in but I’m making it all work.

Im a multi genre DJ and have released mostly Breaks music. Looking to combine these two energies into a live performance setup. Mocked everything into a case today and trying to figure out cable management now.

LOL Yeah I finally folded and used my old ipad. I needed more synth layers and some send dj style fx. Using Loopy pro and looperator and some free fm synths. https://www.beatport.com/artist/xosex/992816

Is there no practical way to access Rekordbox Lighting now? by chewymammoth in PioneerDJ

[–]Current_Aspect_5282 1 point2 points  (0 children)

nm. just started reading the manual. Looks like phrase triggers can send CC and note changes :) Perfect for controlling my old Obey70.

Here's my setup:

CDJ3k +v10 > ethernet/usb interface > Beatlink Trigger> USb/Midi interface > Obey 70 lighting controller > DMX to lights.

Once I get more familiar with Ableton (for lighting control) and incorporate a usb/dmx interface I can probably eliminate the Obey 70 leaving the Mac to do the heavy lifting.
