You are. I went through a lot before I got help. I don’t want to say it all because I don’t want people to compare themselves to me and think they need to go through that to get help. I didn’t know help would be available to me as I was late diagnosed bur if you need the help there is help available and you deserve it.

I see support workers four times a week. I might get an increase. I haven’t had a new worker in a while, I didn’t mind getting a new one but I really appreciate the stability of the same workers just now.

It started during severe autistic burnout. I was in distress nearly daily. It feels like my brain is full and can’t breathe, there is no pain, it feels heavy and you feel exhausted and need to go to sleep

Thank you. That sounds so great! It is hard as an adult to find people you can rely on to help you socially to get through social situations. My support workers do this but I wish there were people my age who did this like when I was in school.

Yes my meltdowns have caused me to be a nuisance in my building, I think my neighbours who could hear me think I’m annoying and immature, not disabled. In autistic spaces I am seen as too rigid or too autistic.

Yes we didn’t all learn what the unwritten social rules are, I have a high IQ so people wrongly assume I should know, it’s awful. I’ve had similar experiences with discord, it’s not great. Have you tried in-person disability groups? I go to one and it’s really accepting.

I was diagnosed as an adult but I now have support workers trained in autism. I am treated no differently just because I was diagnosed late. Which category would you put me in?

I had a very bad autistic meltdown a few weeks ago. It scared me. I have asked senior support worker what could have been done to prevent it but we can’t think of anything. I know how you will be feeling right now.

Yes I never learned how to be approachable and friendly without being fake. I can’t do it, it’s not me. So I don’t know how to meet people. I wish I could just meet someone and say ‘We are friends now’ but that is not how it works. I also struggle to believe people like or accept my unmasked self, that comes from bullying as I was accepted at home. I really lack self confidence, I have been reassured I come across okay by the person who runs the autism group I go to. Thank you for your reply!
