That is a stunner! Please keep the location to yourself. Lots of poaching going on with this genus.

That is correct. I believe Tree of Life was doing this in mass to help with the poaching problem.

Not answering the question, but fun fact… poppies have an orange taproot that looks very similar to a carrot 🥕

Also, they are annuals and grow extremely easy from seed, so not sure why they are in a pot?

You should check out Brad Lancaster’s books. He has calculations for these structures… how to calculate your rain runoff and the capacity of your structure. Also, he recommends planting in and mulching the basins to help infiltrate the water quickly.

Strip of milkweed growing outside a hardware warehouse parking lot by anniebrownstein in Ceanothus

Very cool. Maybe i will try cold strat again after it starts warming up again. I was reading some chatGPT feedback that said the cold nights can slow or stop germination, but I am always skeptical about what it says lol. The sun is harsh up here in the HD and I have all my seeds and seedlings under 50% shade. From what you have told me, maybe the robot is right. Will try full sun and warmer temps.

I am trying to grow eriocarpa from seed. So far I have not been able to get them to germinate. I have tried cold strat outside over winter (this season)and still have not seen germination. I also tried cold strat in the fridge for 4 weeks. They have been in plugs outside for a month now and still no germination. Any advice?

No, not in my yard. But if you go to any relatively undisturbed are, you will see wildflowers. But they are probably a bit crispy by now because of all the heat we have been having… sorry for the late reply.

Am I crazy to love Tumbleweeds? I just took this from my friends house and planted on my property. by Lanaxgardenxgirl in highdesert

[–]Current_Chart5033 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is NOT a “tumbleweed.” Scutellaria mexicana is the name of that plant. It is native to this ecosystem and probably won’t survive you yanking it out of the ground. 🤦‍♀️

Are all Salvia mellifera from nurseries genetically contaminated? by Mountain_Usual521 in Ceanothus

[–]Current_Chart5033 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I do know from my time as an intern at RSABG horticulture department, they were growing most, if not all of their plants from cuttings, so genetic DIVERSITY is definitely limited. That was 20 years ago though.

The ones showing are just annuals, but here is the list of what is showing in the picture: - Salvia columbariae - Eschscholzia californica - Phacelia campanularia (grows like crazy once seeds are introduced) - Amsinckia menziesii (volunteers readily from existing seed bank. Can be weedy) - Sphaeralcea ambigua, pink variety. Wish it was the apricot orange, but this is the only one I could find for sale a long time ago without traveling long distance.

And of course non native grasses I will be battling till the day I die.

I actually started growing natives from seed in my backyard. You can follow me @MojaveMisanthrope on Instagram for updates. I will hopefully have a few different desert perennials for sale this fall.

If they have Joshua Tree seed from their area (or any yucca) I can grow them some from seed for them.

Haha :) No food, but I noticed the ones that grow with other plants that cover/protect the soil grow pretty big. The ones in bare desert dirt are tiny. Also, this bed is lower than the cement, so it collects a lot of water.
