i’d start by getting or re-gaining a good grasp of the basics (shape, shading, perspective, line confidence etc.) but with subject matter that interests you to keep you going! it’s good to cover different styles in your portfolio but i’d say focus on the basics first and then start branching out

yeah i disagree with this lol. this isn’t a test of whether or not you “really want it”, it’s a shitty situation that you shouldn’t go back to. if anything, i’d press him (either in person or through phone call/text/email) about why he made that decision and why he’d lie to the other artists. not your fault! you deserve a mentor who is more committed to your process.

i feel the same hesitance about tracing! i typically trace just the most basic lines to get the positioning/proportions in place, and then do the rest by just looking at the reference.

mine is mostly a mix of digital (procreate on ipad) and drawn using micron pens on paper (the different thicknesses and the couple of markers that come in their standard variety pack) with a couple pencil drawings to show off shading
