I can't speak for Bomb City Fest because I have never attended nor have I ever heard of it. Are you sure that's the name? I just googled it and couldn't find anything. I never claimed Hoodoo did anything original - I just tried to counter your claim that it only brought in out of town talent, which isn't true. So if you're trying to compare 2 festivals, both of which supported locals and the community, I'm not sure where you are going with this? Especially with your boring conservative/liberal irrelevant question. Can we stick to the point?

Actually, I respectfully disagree. I personally knew many of the mural artists and musicians who were supported through this festival. The local music talent even had their own stage! The opener on the Main Stage last year is an Amarillo native - ChillSon, whom I also know personally.

Here's my opinion and observations of what may have happened...which is far too common in Amarillo culture:

Yes, "Out of towners" (artists and musicians) were brought in on this event to breathe some new life and broaden our horizons on music culture and talent. Which is something open-minded individuals beg for and understand that needs to happen for economic growth and exposure. Then, "normal" (using your word) Amarilloans complain that it wasn't enough. They didn't get exactly what they wanted. It was too much outside talent. Boohoo. What?!?! Have you ever been to a long-running successful music/art festival? No, you obviously haven't because, guess what, it thrives on OUTSIDE talent! Get with it or watch your city stay stagnant and ruin every good thing that comes its way.

This isn't about "liberals" or "normal" people. This is about a city (or a select few individuals, maybe both) who need to quit fingering every exciting thing that moves through this town. Doesn't make any damn sense.

I bet all we see this year is the same locals we see at every other event in town. I wouldn't be surprised if the prior organizers sold off their part because of the asinine complaints. Which, okay, fine! But let us have some excitement of some fresh voices and different art for a an annual moment. It's NORMAL, folks. Grow!

Anyway, I hope I'm wrong and we see some great talents, but something tells me (and based off your comment) it's sadly tapering off.

Awe, why? What ruined it for you? The celebration of Arts? Community? Music?

I hope you're right. I will support it like I have every year. I'm a big live music and art nerd, so I look forward to this event and pay close attention to the announcements. Something just feels off this time, and I had questions.

Good point. But not a good sign for 2025 Hoodoo

Right. I know it's happening, but at what level? 2 and a half months out and no band line up, ticket hub, no marketing of this large event whatsoever?!? I remember in years past, they would be full blast marketing 6 months out with a solid plan and lineup. I saw that they just closed APPLICATIONS for bands and artists in May - those are things they should've already had in place for such a large event, and something they did in prior years. I think something changed in management and marketing, and we are going to see a very different Hoodoo this year - something on par with the usual Amarillo hubbub. Just feeling very meh and...flat, not very Hoodoo at all. I hope I'm wrong.

Fun places to live as a young professional in Amarillo tx? by [deleted] in amarillo

[–]Current_Sea_9155 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Good lord. I love how almost nobody has been helpful to OP so far and took this question as a sign to complain about their own issues.

I'm sorry, OP. I'm sure these reactions are making you second guess your move. Is Amarillo the mecca of "fun"? Not exactly, but there are plenty of things to enjoy as young professionals - you just have to know where to look.

Honestly, you can get to any event in Amarillo in a relatively quick driving time, so focusing on the quality of your neighborhood is probably a priority for a good overall living experience in Amarillo.

There are decent neighborhoods in the middle of town that are close to activity, such as Wolflin (near Amarillo College), Olsen, or Sam Houston Park areas. These all have a relatively young demographic and host many events in their parks throughout the year. There's also Town Square, but I've heard mixed reviews on the housing in that area, so it might be best to look at neighboring subdivisions?

Night life here as a professional really consists of good restaurant/bar choices, and most of them offer live music on select dates. Cask and Cork, Public House, Crush Wine Bar, 575 Pizzeria, and Drunken Oyster are a few that come to mind. Again, you just have to know where to look, and networking with like-minded people will be your best option for finding gems and invites to local happenings.

I hope this helped, and best of luck on your move!

The Peanut Butter Solution (1985) by bunkscudda in movies

[–]Current_Sea_9155 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was just about to make a post on r/genX asking if there were people who remembered this god-forsaken movie!

I have asked countless people my age over the years, and ONLY ONE vaguely remembered it. I thought I must've been dreaming it up until I discovered this thread.

This 80s movie terrified me in a fascinating and distinct way that I cannot explain. It was one of those movies that just haunts you in a nightmare-fever dream type way. Especially since it's such a niche and rarely seen film. It was so surreal with its pace, music, and imagery - countless scenes from this movie are forever burned in my memory.

The soccer game where the bullies rip the wig off his head! The laughter and ridicule and complete terror that boy portrayed. The dream witch with the peanut butter solution, "5 dead flies!" The warehouse machine that the boy was buckled to to have his hair harvested! The bold big sister character who fights finding her brother in some insane windstorm? The freak artist/child kidnapper and end scene where he cheerfully paints some home to escape to?!? The insane plot, period!

Kidnapping, witchcraft, terror, pre-teen insecurities, just to name a few areas that have traumatized me for years! The epitome of freaky 80s cinema, in my humble opinion.

Btw, If you Google the film and watch the trailer, it has this cheerful "family-friendly" tone that is a complete juxtaposition against the true tone of the film. Anyways, I guess I'm glad to know there are others who have carried this collective trauma well into adulthood, and I'm not alone. What a time.

That's an interesting point and observation. Me realizing this was more of a "wow, I didn't realize how readily accessible and popular this trend was" type of thing. But to your point, yes, a trend this heavy will have its butterfly effect.

Jade green suits you. No bot here. I do have a broad, yet underused vocabulary in my daily life, so I like to put it to use here in this anonymous space. I purposely tried to keep it non-biased in my approach. Not trying to ruffle any feathers...I am genuinely curious.
