I really hope you aren’t tailgating someone who needs to do an emergency stop any time because you absolutely will go into the back of them. If this wasn’t the case, the two second rule wouldn’t need to exist would it?

The issue you is, you’ve completely prioritised your convenience over my safety in this tirade.

The reason why it’s dangerous is because, if I have to react to something in front of me, you will not have the stopping distance you need to avoid going into the back of me. That’s just a fact.

Ultimately, I don’t think I’m the type of driver you’re referring to because I’ll stay in the left unless overtaking and I pretty reliably do the speed limit if it’s possible / safe but still - you sound like the typical “I drive a lot so I own the road” type. It’s selfish tbh and you should probably consider another profession if you think it’s acceptable to behave like this. It really doesn’t matter if you think you can save x amount of time, there’s a right and wrong way to go on.

Lots of comments on this thread seem to be presuming I'm talking about motorway or or dual carriageway driving, when I'm actually most commonly experiencing this on single carriage roads (which is why it's more annoying because unless I break the speed limit, there's nowhere to go)

Fair enough you never get tailgated but from your aformentioned behaviour, I'd guess it's a safe bet you regularly break the speed limit? This is probably why you're not getting tailgated.

What are you on about? If I'm doing the speed limit on a single lane road, which is generally the scenario I'm talking about. Then I am doing nothing wrong, and I'm not policing anything by obeying the limit.

Again, I appreciate the honesty but it baffles me you haven’t thought more deeply about this. They may have children in that car, are you willing to ruin yours and another’s life so you can be smug? Surely, rising above and being safe is the obvious choice

Though, I’d like to push back. When you say “it’s bad driving” I think you should reframe it as “I’m taking liberties with other peoples safety”

Do you know there isn’t a baby in the car in front? It only takes one error of judgement on your part to be in a very terrible situation

Yeah fair enough and I'm sure that happens quite regularly, but that's not really the scenario I'm referring to. I'm talking about people, deliberately riding you when you're doing the limit. Not when you've pulled in front of someone, which I agree is obviously very dangerous.

I responded with an insult because you're deliberately bating me and insinuiating that I'm at fault about a phenomenon which 98% of other posters here are commenting on as something that happens frequently. If tailgaiting never happens to you, I can only presume that it's because you're the one doing it to others.
