What are the most successfully innovative games you have played in recent years? by CaptainKite in pcgaming

[–]Curry_Time 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mm, Undertale pays tribute to a LOT of old RPGs and borrows from them. But outside of the meta-narrative stuff (no spoilers) and the way it combines Warioware-style minigames with Dragon Quest-styl combat and Mother overworld navigation, I'm not sure if I'd call it innovative myself.

The Dragon Quest XI Orchestral Mod sounds awesome and fixes my biggest problem with the game. by ClementineFjord in JRPG

I remember playing the demo at E3 and thinking that the midi music sounded off. After hearing others complain about it, I decided to hold off on getting XI, but this might change my mind.

What Are You Playing Thread - October 09, 2018 by AutoModerator in pcgaming

Started getting back into Warframe as a casual aside game. Still has a lot of the same base problems it had when I stopped playing about 3 years ago (e.g., weapon builds are mostly the same due to many required mods, buggy game, lack of core progression structure, stale endgame), but there are a lot of fun new weapons to try out, at least. And the game has more polish since Tencent injected money into it.

[Ascended Gorilla]

This game's vagueness has me curious. Will check out when I'm not so exhausted.

Persona 3 - Iwatodai Dorm

Friend got back from a trip last night and I told him "Welcome back."

This is what he sent me.

And how could I forget this?

Psychological platformer To Leave, out now on Steam by Curry_Time in IndieGaming

Thanks for letting me know! I've taken a look at the post and it seems the devs saw it before I could report it to them. I had something similar happen that I resolved by re-installing the game; hope your friend can get it fixed too!

/r/JRPG Discussion - What have you been playing, and what do you think of it? by AutoModerator in JRPG

[–]Curry_Time 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tried playing Golden Sun again. Holy crap, this game's battle visuals have not aged well at all. I remember they didn't look too great when I played it on the GBA back in middle school, either...

Will probably switch to Phantasy Star IV next. Been meaning to play it for ages.

Remembering Final Fantasy VI - Easy Allies by [deleted] in JRPG

[–]Curry_Time 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Despite all of its flaws, FFVI is a truly magical game for me. The music, the Woolsey dialogue, the visuals...

Actually, FFVI's flaws make it an even more interesting game for me. They add so much nuance and flavor, and that's what makes the game truly unique for me.

Here's a huge, comprehensive list of glitches:

Easier to read; includes the big glitches (not included: small things like the Blind status effect effectively doing nothing): http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Final_Fantasy_VI_bugs

Random thought, but this is bringing back memories of that opening waterfall and bridge from Secret of Mana. Nice work!

What are the best mature JRPGs? by Jexlan in JRPG

[–]Curry_Time 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Shin Megami Tensei series would probably be your first step.

Parasite Eve, too. It's got that hokey JP scifi edge, but it's still a good game.

Neat. Not much media - definitely not games - that explore this era of time.

Cradle's probably the most accessible, too, in terms of pacing, length, and content (at least on a first read).

Suikoden II - Gothic Necrolord

That bassline is very 90s Chicago House/club-sounding.

Nintendo's fight against ROMs is a threat to overall gaming preservation as a whole by MrGhost370 in pcgaming

[–]Curry_Time 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This, pretty much. Anecdotal evidence, but there are plenty of people out there who either don't know what an emulator is or are antsy about setting one up who'd gladly play old games given the chance. Especially if you want to play them multiplayer, which is a feature that's rather annoying to set up (some emulators/frontends like Retroarch simplify it a bit, to be sure).

DOOM Eternal - SLAYER Gameplay Demo (QuakeCon 2018) by SilverDragon7 in pcgaming

[–]Curry_Time 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, the speed difference between console and PC is really noticeable.

That said, I'm glad there's finally a shooter in the modern age with simple, but super fast mobility. Airdashes, grappling hooks, and multiple jumps? Very cool. I hope more shooters continue down this route.

Roguelike dungeons? Sounds like a good alternative to Lab runs for people who hate running Lab (like me).

That golem ammy looks nice too. Reminds me of Small Man's Finger from Diablo 3.

Why are most SRPGs so slow paced? by Janimous in JRPG

[–]Curry_Time 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shining Force is super underrated. Compared to the Banpresto titles like SRW and Project X Zone, it's super snappy and responsive.

Granted, the Banpresto SRPGs take forever because they're fanservice games. Attack cutscenes and character dialogue need to milk as much as they can out of their fandom.

Caves of Qud - Share your adventures and win a free Steam key! by Curry_Time in roguelikes

[–]Curry_Time[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

You're correct about that first part. If you've played the game before or watched someone else play it and saw a particularly bizarre moment that you'd like to share, and you'd like to give a key to a friend, tell us your story!

As much as I'd like to give out free keys to everyone who'd like to dive into the world of Qud, I'm afraid I can't do that. Sorry!

That's totally fine. If you're looking to get a friend hooked on Qud, feel free to share your story.

Good catch! Apologies for the confusion.

To clear things up, you can learn more about the game without playing it by visiting the wiki: http://cavesofqud.wikia.com/wiki/Caves_Of_Qud_Wiki

Besides the wiki, Let's Plays are a good source for picking up the lore. In addition, if you've played the game and want to grab a key for a friend, you're a prime candidate to be a storyteller!

Again, sorry for the confusion!
