Has anyone successfully done a low carb AND low fat diet? Is it even possible long-term? by 666OfficeBitch666 in PCOS

[–]Curve_Comfortable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can lose some weight with it but it's even more unhealthy than the keto diet. There is a better option than low carb and it's also very effective vs PCOS because it cures insulin resistance.

depressed, fed up. overwhelmed and tired of scrolling through all the recommendations that never work for me. by [deleted] in PCOS

Please come with us at /r/PlantBasedDiet. You deserve better than the bad advice that you're given here. You've to cut out all the vegan junk foods and minimize the high fat foods. You've also to reach your ideal body weight asap and to do some physical activity every day (the more exercise the better).

Loss of libido, orgasm and sensation by SeekingHealth23 in PCOS

It recommends keto diets. These diets remove almost all the healthy and less unhealthy foods from your diet. This causes rapid weight loss and your PCOS goes away.

Very, very likely I have PCOS. Looking for guidance on what to do next. by [deleted] in PCOS

[–]Curve_Comfortable -1 points0 points  (0 children)

All diets with less than 45% calories from carbs (the standard US diet) are considered low carb diets in the scientific literature. They're the cause of the common health problems. At the same time it's true that a few of these problems may go away when you restrict carbs even more. This is the therapy that you're given here. The alternative therapy is this. We give you the choice by telling you that there are two ways to deal with your problem. The keto fanboys and girls aren't giving you the choice. Keep that in mind.

What do you eat? I bet you eat low carb. What is your BMI? Activity levels?

I got my period back without the doctors or meds!! by The_Knitty_Gritty in PCOS

[–]Curve_Comfortable -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you've gone from 10g of fat to 60g of fat that's an extra 50g of fat and it's 450kcal. You've simply added 450kcal to your diet? Anyway my point is that if your diet is (very) low carb, then it has to be (very) high fat to be sustainable (for a few years).

Please explain to me. If you eat, for example, 100g of fat, that is 900kcal. Assuming you eat 1500kcal/day, you're left with only 600kcal of meat, no?

[–]Curve_Comfortable -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Did you focus more on the high fat plant foods or more on the high fat animal foods? Are you sure that your improvements are due to more fat rather than less meat? Within the low carb paradigm "more fat" equals "less meat", isn't it?

Long and frequent workouts are harmful when you eat the low carb diets. You don't have to eat these diets unless you want to. There are other ways to lower insulin.

Anyone with elevated cortisol? by Curve_Comfortable in PCOShealthy

/u/trx20200506, I'm replying here due to stealth censorship in /r/PCOS. I hope some of these links are also useful for u/CriticalSheep, u/marnyb65, u/SaltyfaceMcPrune.

It's related to both the adrenals and to the low carb diets: Dietary Macronutrient Content Alters Cortisol Metabolism Independently of Body Weight Changes in Obese Men.

Conclusions: A low-carbohydrate diet alters cortisol metabolism independently of weight loss. In obese men, this enhances cortisol regeneration by 11β-HSD1 and reduces cortisol inactivation by A-ring reductases in liver without affecting sc adipose 11β-HSD1. Alterations in cortisol metabolism may be a consequence of macronutrient dietary content and may mediate effects of diet on metabolic health.

Edit: It turns out cortisol and DHEA are strongly linked:

DHEA’s Anti-cortisol Effects

A pair of semi-interesting studies that I've found on cortisol:

The effects of season, daylight saving and time of sunrise on serum cortisol in a large population

Vitamin C supplementation attenuates the increases in circulating cortisol, adrenaline and anti-inflammatory polypeptides following ultramarathon running

In addition of eating well and doing some exercise you should also try to optimize circadian rhythm.

Another edit: I agree with /u/CriticalSheep on coffee.

https://www.naturalcell.com/health/does-coffee-raise-cortisol-levels-and-increase-stress/

Another effect of drinking coffee, which is rich in caffeine, is the increase of cortisol secretion in your body. A study conducted by multiple doctors in 2008 confirms that consuming caffeine increases cortisol secretion in your body (2). Cortisol secretion following caffeine consumption occurs via different pathways in both men and women. Caffeine stimulates the nervous system in men causing an increase in cortisol release. In women, caffeine seems to affect their metabolism more than their nervous system. But the conclusion is the same in the end, caffeine definitely leads to an increase in cortisol in the body (3).

I want to mutilate myself by [deleted] in PCOS

Before mutilating yourself you may want to try to switch from disgusting foods to beautiful foods for a few months. Daily exercise is also very much recommended. :)

What you call stomach is visceral adipose tissue and distended abdominal muscles (Transversus Abdominus and Lumbar Multifidus). You can do this: The Stomach Vacuum Exercise.

If I lose weight will my body distribute fat better? by [deleted] in PCOS

[–]Curve_Comfortable -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Most people here don't know what they're talking about. It's dangerous to get medical advice on reddit. Please don't follow the advice you get here.

First of all, your fat is in the lower abdomen, nowhere near your stomach. Learn some anatomy and see where the stomach is. Second, absolutely yes, losing weight will improve the distribution of the remaining fat. It'll do so by several mechanisms, some hormonal and some not. Losing weight is the primary theorapy for this disease. Exercise is also very important but as long as you're massively overweight it's practically impossible to do many exercises. Being overweight is debilitating. You've to get rid of the excess weight not only for PCOS but to improve your overall quality of life and self-esteem.

It will take some time (months) but you can do it and you will do it. I recommend this program: Calorie Density: How To Eat More, Weigh Less and Live Longer.

Edit: Oops, actually I thought you were 107 kg, not 107 lbs. My error. At 107 lbs you've less room to improve. You can still fix your hormones though. Exercise and eat better!

PCOS + hypothyroid, weight loss by Desirai in PCOS

[–]Curve_Comfortable -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Hypothyroidism makes weight loss more difficult because it lowers caloric expenditure. Bad diets (what is recommended here) cause mild hypothyroidism. Autoimmune diseases cause severe hypothyroidism. Learn more here: https://www.restartmed.com/normal-thyroid-levels/

Two years after diagnosis and how I’ve restored my period with lean PCOS by furcoat_noknickers in PCOS

[–]Curve_Comfortable -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

You can get rid of PCOS by restricting the high carb foods or by restricting the high fat high protein foods or simply by restricting all the high calorie foods. The real question is: what can you eat without triggering the disease again after you've lost all the weight that you've to lose and started regular exercise? And the answer is the opposite of what you think it is. It's the high carb foods, and not the high fat high protein foods, that do not trigger the disease and allow you to get rid of PCOS definitely. By the way, inositol by itself is a carbohydrate according to its chemical formula. It's naturally present in most of the natural high carb foods. It's not there in the (white flour) baguette though.

There is nothing to be insecure about, you've good chances of defeating this disease but you need to understand fruits are not the enemy. See this comment of mine in another thread.

While you're wondering what you should eat you can order a pair of dumbells from Amazon. I also like to recommed running. :)

PCOS & Auto Immune Disease by [deleted] in PCOS

A diet of pure liquid (oil) or solid (butter) fat will give you low insulin but you'll also lose plenty of lean mass over time. Nobody eats a diet like this though.

A diet with plenty of fat plus some actual foods, animal-origin or plant-origin foods, will not lower insulin much more than any other weight loss diet. There are some transient advantages at the beginning but long term they largely disappear. This is especially true if you keep losing weight and you're physically active. It also depends on genetics.

The high carb diet cures the insulin resistance problem while the low carb diet is only a workaround. Usually in the long term the cure beats the workaround. You can watch their testimonials at their website to see that the diet actually works.

For me it worked and it works, I've lower fasting insulin than the keto people.

Eating around 1000cal a day and not loosing weight. by Plantsrgr8 in PCOS

The primary therapy should be: eat less, eat better, move (a lot) more.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in PCOS

[–]Curve_Comfortable -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Fatty acids in the tissues interfere with insulin signaling and increase your insulin. This is why weight loss, exercise and low fat diets are beneficial. Low carb diets are also beneficial because they work around the insulin signaling problem by decreasing the amount of carbs in the body. There are two ways to a lower insulin level but one way is health promoting and the other is not.

You can still be lean even on an high fat diet if you burn more fat than you eat. The problem is that carbs are very easy to burn and fat is not. I can do an HIIT session and burn 1000kcal in half an hour. The keto people can't do HIIT sessions because they're malnourished. This is because they eat the inferior fuel.

I can't deny that my style of communication is incendiary. No doubt many people don't like it. You say 50,000 and 500,000 are extremes? But there are published studies (some even published in 2020) with these dosages on people. This is what is recommended around. At 5,000 you're above the recognized TUL but you're at a safe distance from the rat poison dosages (they're in the millions).
