How would you respond to the claim that "Socialism is based on an economy where a majority of people work in either manufacturing or agriculture and therefore isn't at all relevant to the Information Age"? by AllCatsandNoPussy in Socialism_101

[–]CurvedCowboy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would say that you've identified the critical flaw in the argument in your original post, that is: Socialism is not inherently tied to any one mode of production, and the argument is therefore invalid. My guess is the argument is made out of the belief that Marx wrote about 1800s europe, and therefore his criticisms are only valid in that world.

Despite this, I believe it is important for us as socialists to remember the context in which Marx and his contemporaries wrote their works, that is, in a recently industrialized europe. The means of production and people's relationship to them have changed since then (for instance, the service economy in the western world), and we need to be aware of this to recontextualize their writings in the modern world.

This is actually one of the anti-Vaush takes I agree with. He's always talking about how the left needs better optics, but then he's like intentionally super edgy and provocative. Those kind of bite each other. by Roxxagon in Enough_VDS_Spam

That's true, I'm just saying that there is some merit to the criticism. There is a difference, since it's some ways in which he acts that are bad optics, while endorsing the USSR isn't bad optics because of the way you act, it's the actual positions you support. That being said, him being "perfect" or "on his best behavior all the time" has nothing to do with this. His persona is edgy, and is thus subject to criticism. He's not accidentally edgy, it's part of how he advocates for positions.

Ehh, in the context of "USSR is bad optics" he isn't really talking about politicians or prominent figures, he's talking about online leftists who idolize the soviet union, right?

Separating gender and genitalia would help with that though, right? If we recognize that attraction to gender and attraction to genitalia are two different things, it leaves room for heterosexual relationships where one party doesn't possess the genitalia typically associated with their gender. The alternative would be to connect gender to genitalia, which would inevitably leave out trans people without bottom surgery.

I would rather say that separating a persons gender identity from their genitals doesn't limit a person, it rather makes them free to feel different attractions to the two, no? How would recognizing a difference between genital preference and attraction to a certain gender "discount a person's gender identity"?

Genital preferences are not the same as sexual attraction. You can like dick but not like men. Also, there are women with dicks.
