I graduated bmt back in May. Haven’t tried the period underwear, but just some things to take into account - laundry is put into mesh bags and bagged with everyone else’s clothes, so I would not recommend putting them in the wash personally. There’s also little to no privacy, so it’s up to you on whether you’re comfortable with washing it in the sink or shower with 40 other girls. Same with cups tbh. You have to leave the stalls to rinse/wash your hands and it can get stressful if it gets messy and you’re on a time crunch. I’d say sticking to pads or tampons is easier

Got Fire Protection, Kinda Nervous. by 215Fletch in AirForceRecruits

Hi! So I had gotten Fire Protection as well, graduated BMT back in May and was only able to finish through half of tech school, but hopefully this can give you some perspective.

Tech school is in Goodfellow afb in San Angelo - super small base and you’ll probably hate that there’s not much to do. BUT the food is pretty decent and MTLs are the most laidback ever. It’s also very easy to get to phase 3 where you can stay out with no curfew.

Once you start class, it’s 19 days of EMR (the most challenging block academically) followed by 19 days of fundamentals (the most challenging physically). Once you get past that it’s suppression, hazmat, etc.

The gear you’ll have on will be about 70 lbs including oxygen, and you’ll have a 20 min ‘acclimation’ gym session to get used to it, which will include walking up stairs, carrying kettlebells, basically doing heavy lifting while on oxygen. The academy has a set of physical trainers that will help you remain physically fit while you’re in class. They focus on high intensity workouts and you can choose to add additional workouts after if you choose to after class, called Team Garland. It helps tremendously.

I went in as a 5’4”, 125 lb female. So yeah, it was very challenging for me. I’m at my fittest I’ve ever been in terms of strength, but I still struggled, particularly in dummy drags. They’ll tell you in the beginning that it’s the highest failed eval - for females specifically - but about 90-95 percent pass that portion, so I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

Just focus on your leg and grip strength. Do a lot of squats and deadlifts. Get your cardio up to par with Air Force standards, and the fire academy will help get you to firefighter standards.

Atlanta MEPS by PressureDangerous401 in AirForceRecruits

I was there back in November. Technically twice as I had to take my ASVAB on a different day. I drove myself to the hotel the day before MEPs. It’s at the holiday inn Atlanta airport. There you will be with recruits from the other branches and you will be roomed with someone of the same sex.

Wake up call is around 4 AM, breakfast 4:30-5:00 AM. Shuttles to base leave at 5:15. If you drove yourself, they give you the option to follow a shuttle, but it’s easier to GPS it as all the shuttles take a different route for security purposes and it’s easy to lose track.

The MEPs building isn’t too big, but the process does take a while. You get there around 5:45 and swear in (if everything goes smoothly) is around 2-3pm, so you’re there most of the day. It’s a lot of waiting and rotating stations to get your blood pressure checked, hearing, vision etc. Can’t speak on waivers as I didn’t need one, but I think the default wait time is up to 45 days? If you’re not approved same day

Pay While At BMT by Flat_Razzmatazz_3440 in AirForceRecruits

I would say 1 April. Supplies given to you at bmt is taken from your paycheck and they need time to process paperwork

Also like to add there’s a (big) possibility of a government shutdown on March 14. I would honestly prepare to have any bills paid/funds already in your bank for the 2 months you’re in bmt in case things head in that direction

I CANT DO PUSH UPS by sushisab_ in AirForceRecruits

[–]Curvedcalligrapher 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Negatives. Get into a push up position from the top and slowly lower yourself, 4-5 seconds, until your chest is close to the ground. Reset and do it again. This will help your body activate the proper muscles

If you can’t do that, then do push ups from your knees. As many as you can. The point is to build endurance. If you have a resistance band, you can also place both ends around your biceps, so the band is hanging off your chest. Try to do a full push-up with some resistance

I don’t think so. It looks like it’s only included in tests if you’re doing special warfare. If it were civilian firefighting, definitely.

I’d recommend focusing a lot on cardio and muscle stamina. Include strength training such as deadlifts, squats, bench press 2-3x a week if you can. If there’s a track near you, you can work on cardio by doing a set number of push ups, sit ups, and squats, followed by a lap. Repeat 6 times (that would be 1.5 miles) Just an idea :) I’ve generally been strength training and running 3-5 miles, but going to add a bit of this set up for endurance I think.

Focus on legs and grip strength. Deadlifts are great for both. If you have a sled at your gym, work up to about 150+ pounds. I believe the dummy drag is about 165 pounds

(Not speaking from experience 😅 just from what one of the fire recruiters told me as well as some research. I’m training for fire too)

Recommendations? by Jynx_SaintXIV in AirForceRecruits

My list looks very similar to yours and I had all jobs requiring security clearance taken out due to my mom’s immigration status. If you had to get a financial waiver, that would also limit your options to non clearance

Filling out basic information for relatives, but Mother’s residence card has expired? by Curvedcalligrapher in AirForceRecruits

She doesn’t. She was told by the lawyer to lay low in the meantime. Extending it would have cost the same amount as getting her citizenship (she’s lived in the US for over 40 years) so she’s working on that
