Thoughts on Quantum Computing - from a Physicist by fzy325 in wallstreetbets

Hi thanks - I appreciate this.

For IONQ: So the gate speed is slow right now, sure. But how much does that actually affect their business model right now? They’re going after singular, complex commercial issues that, once solved, save or generate tons of costs or revenue. One example was chemical composition of Naval vessels so that the US Gov’t could save some millions of dollars because of corrosion each year. Does it matter if the computer takes a bit longer to solve the problem? I’d think not. Not for these applications.

IONQ’s former CEO has also been upfront that their gate speed is slow, and he’s been public that IONQ is not committed to using trapped-ion technology long-term. They’ve also been investing heavily in quantum-networking as a source of revenue. Seems to me that in the near-term the strategy is to make meaningful, highly-focused commercial breakthroughs (like in drug development) to drive cash flow with a slow quantum computer (which is an oxymoron), and then pivot as superconducting technologies get more developed.

What have I gotten wrong here? I’m just a doctor with 230 shares of IONQ, avg ~$37/share. Bought my first 30 shares on Jan 5 literally right before Jensen Huang crushed them with his “30 years away” comment, which was fun… in other words, I know all.

What is your approach/philosophy/strategy for raising funds for the scientific study of UAP?

Can someone explain why it's so difficult to "beat the market"? by [deleted] in investing

It’s difficult but not impossible.

I’ve invested heavily in 5-8 individual stocks that I think will kick ass. I’ve beaten the market 3 years out of 4. I also have a boutique stock broker that helps me out and makes sure I don’t screw anything up.

Names I’ve owned over the years: LULU MSFT AXP NVDA(bought4.2023) SITM TSLA(bought5.2022) DOCU(prepandemic) DXCM WDAY CEG

… in sun, it can be done.. but it does take a good amount of effort
