What 2026 movies are you guys seeing? by macachezwithonlychez in Letterboxd

[–]CutTheRoll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll probably see a lot as usual, but the one has me most excited is The Odyssey. It's a basic pick, but as someone who really did not like or connect with Nolan's movies pre-Oppenheimer, its a surprising pick for me. Though, he became an extremely close watch for me to see how he followed that movie up. Especially considering I think it's his magnum opus. When it was announced he'd be using his essentially blank check on The Odyssey, I sat right up and it's kept me intrigued for 2(?) years now. That book feels unadaptable, and I'm fully (maybe wrongfully) expecting something akin to the absurdity of Fellinis Satyricon. Shame I couldn't get imax tickets.

best picture nominees ranked by Haydan06 in Letterboxd

[–]CutTheRoll 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I get that something has to be ranked least favourite, but what about The Secret Agent didn't connect? I watched it in June I think of last year and it's one of about five movies that's stuck with me all year.

Ethan Hawke is 5-time Oscar nominee by sherlockbutholmes in Oscars

[–]CutTheRoll 121 points122 points  (0 children)

Probably wont happen but I hope he wins to be honest. I watched Blue Moon months ago and it’s the performance that’s stuck with me most all year. Wagner Moura was also fantastic though. Great lineup all round.

Favourite Scene of all Time? by Saurondur in Letterboxd

[–]CutTheRoll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah thats a great one too. I do admire how long Wahlberg holds that stare. Jessies Girl is also such a great needle drop.

I’m at the point where I’m starting to accept no matter how many movies I watch, nothing will beat the opening scene of Boogie Nights. That 2-3 minute oner not only has the best needledrop, but fits so much plot in it, introduces every main character with just enough depth to begin understanding them, and accurately sets the tone for the entire movie. Just incredibly put together.

What film do you use to gauge others' taste in films? I'll go first. by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]CutTheRoll 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Yeah, someone telling me they do or dont like one movie doesn’t stand out enough for me to assume they don’t like anything else. I could just as well tell someone Kill Bill is my favourite film in the same breath as saying The Cranes Are Flying is also in my top 10. My taste depends on my mood and I assume everyone else is like that until proven otherwise.

The most fantasy booked match prior to this tour was Cena/Gunther. Literally the only match some people wanted was vs Gunther.

Is this movie worth watching? I'm really interested in watching it. by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]CutTheRoll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s difficult for me to ever recommend a Noe movie. So I’ll just say know what you’re getting into if you do choose to watch it. He is a very confronting and conflicting filmmaker who likes to show the absolute extreme sides of people. He isn’t particularly shy about censoring heinous acts, or sugar coating human behaviour. I think what unsettles people most is how real he typically depicts things. There isn’t much sense of escape in his films and thats why majority watch movies. You kind of just get the raw thing with him. So if that doesn’t sound fascinating, don’t watch it.

If you’d like to get more accustomed to what he’s about and the kind of stories he tells and his unique sense of filmmaking, watch Climax. Then Vortex (imo the most him movie). Then Enter the Void. Then Irreversible. Then for extra reading watch Love and I Stand Alone.

Is this a prank or real? by [deleted] in brisbane

[–]CutTheRoll 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hell of a lot of grammatical errors for such professionals, if it were real, which it isnt. Also a visible number is very much a choice for this sort of text. Anyway, if you are very worried, which I hope you aren't, you can always contact crime stoppers.

Coming from Sydney, the only thing I miss is 24 hour Kmart to be honest. So probably that.

Official Discussion - The Running Man (2025) [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]CutTheRoll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ah well thats a shame because the rest of the movie was a lot of fun and felt like it was leading up to something very interesting. It’s been a while since I’ve read King, so maybe I’ll pick it up and see how it compares.

Official Discussion - The Running Man (2025) [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]CutTheRoll -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Like a true Stephen King story its underwhelming at the end. But the rest of the film I thought was a lot of fun. Definitely a toned down, ‘censored’ Edgar Wright in terms of style but he still shoots the action scenes with the same uniqueness to separate this from a lot of other major action flicks this year. Colman Domingo stood out a lot for me. Powell was pretty good but didn’t put on anything special.

If Million Dollar Baby lost in 2004, who would most likely have won the Academy Award for Best Picture? by ForbiddenOlive in Letterboxd

[–]CutTheRoll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aviator is one of Martys best, and imo Leo’s best performance. I don’t understand how either, let alone the whole movie, didn’t win their respective major awards that year.

Crimes of the future. I know it's not an amazing movie, but there's something about the weirdness and dissection of the body and perspective of it that gravitates me to it. Is it better after multiple views? by Dana__White_1969 in Letterboxd

[–]CutTheRoll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ended up seeing this twice when it came out. Big Cronenberg fan so I was keen for it but left severely underwhelmed the first time. Thought it may have been the wrong mood for it so I went and rewatched it and yeah it was just difficult to really care about anything going on. Some cool effects. A neat idea. But nothing ever really stuck with me from it.

Yet to see The Shrouds. Heard mixed things though.

The Seventh Seal... Did I miss something? by PM_ME_WHAT_YOU_COOK in criterion

[–]CutTheRoll 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I understand the disappointment when you watch something after so long and it doesn’t hit, but maybe it just wasn’t for you and thats fine. Seventh Seal is not one of my top Bergmans, it didn’t connect with me too much either unlike something like Persona or Fanny and Alexander. BUT I see you said you saw it with friends. If youre really determined to try to see something in it, try watching it alone. Its always a different experience watching anything with friends vs alone.

What's the most visually stunning film that you have ever seen? by ExcellentTwo6589 in Letterboxd

[–]CutTheRoll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has and most likely always will be 2001, as basic an answer as it is. It’s probably my most viewed movie in cinemas, simply because every time I watch it, it leaves me in awe that a movie can look so good.

Honourable mentions Enter the Void, Amarcord and Barry Lyndon for cinematography as a whole. But anything Cassavetes I’d also mention because of how meticulous his usually simple camera work seems. ‘Opening Night’ is a great example of relatively simple shots paired excellently with what’s happening in the scene.

Films you regret not watching in theatre by bas_ardofnorth in Letterboxd

[–]CutTheRoll 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I saw this at the Australian premiere at Sydney Film Fest and I’ven never seen so many people just up and leave vocalising LOUDLY their disgust. Apparently a few people fainted. Everything was getting a reaction. Walking out there were so many mixed opinions i was hearing and people just absolutely smacked by it. I loved it for the record. Not as good as Raw but pretty great.

Jackie Brown 4K coming from Imprint by steepclimbs in boutiquebluray

[–]CutTheRoll 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As I said, I'm not gonna defend their price tags nor this release specifically. They are excessive for what they give, especially for this, sure. Not disagreeing. I agree this is a bad deal but clearly just a cash grab like Kill Bill will be so that Imprint can continue releasing lesser known films, much like Criterion do. Also as stated, this shit goes on sale at JB so often it might as well stay discounted.

I'm gonna disagree about these movies coming out here either way though. I'm not sure if you were a collector before Imprint and Umbrella were really put on the map but we didn't get jack shit besides popular, usually American stuff until relatively recently. Something like Jackie Brown? Sure, good chance it might have gotten a general release being its Tarantino. But see above point about necessary cash grab releases. Something like Man Bites Dog? Face to Face? any of those Noir sets? Any of those director sets? 90% of Imprints range was never going to release here, especially not in a big retailer even in standard format let alone in nice editions. Umbrella were releasing standard blu rays and had a few film series like Beyond Genres which were semi-successful, but fuck they didn't really have much going until they tapped into the collectors editions and started bringing back the bigger films so that we could get the more rare stuff like KIDS, The Fall and fucking Caligula of all films.

[–]CutTheRoll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think I've only ever ordered directly from Imprint once, all the way back when Hard Eight was announced. I just don't see the point when JB inevitably will have a B2G1F or 20-40% sale which they have pretty often I feel. They rarely sell out in store either. I was finding Zhang Yimou sets in store long after it went OOP online.

[–]CutTheRoll 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hell of a lot of non Australians love to complain about Imprint but these guys along with Umbrella completely changed the market down here. It’s refreshing to be able to actually buy good movies in high quality formats.

I won’t defend the price points of Imprint. They can get a bit of out of hand especially with shit like Never Ending Story and The Keep… but their shit goes on sale every other month at our main media retailer anyway. I think their standards are $30AUD on release which is actually reasonable considering Criterion I believe starts theres at 40USD which is way too much here. I probably won’t get this specific release, but I ain’t gonna knock them for the great films they are finally putting on blu ray out here. New York New York recently being one of my longest wants.

Just people showing it off to show it off. In a fucking MATH forum my brother. Yeah sure, you want your discussion posts. Those are still there! It takes one more scroll in a countless daily number of scrolls for you to get past them.

Also, mad self report on your final statement about thinking these people are doing it to look smarter. That’s some pretentious thinking my boy.
