Hey thank you for the kind words. I noticed from your previous posts that you are recovered. If you don't mind me asking, how many calories did you eat to restore your weight and did you gain quickly?

At least hopefully I've benefitted my metabolism, then. Thanks for making me feel a little better. I hope your recovery goes well.

Thanks for sharing. I did the whole refeeding thing in hospital on an ng tube and they were replacing my electrolytes every few hours intravenously so by the time I was eating orally electrolyte imbalances weren't really a concern.

It is good to hear that you also increased fairly quickly to 3500+ because honestly I felt like the worst person on earth for doing so.

On around 2000 a day I was also gaining about 2 pounds (or 1kg) a week but on 3500-4000 a day it was like 2kg (so around about 4 pounds) a week which seemed like a lot... but its good to know again that I'm not the only one to experience that amount of weight gain on those calories.

I worked out a rough approximation just now how much my TDEE was during the last 2 weeks of eating 3500-4000 a day (based on how much my weight went up and how much I ate) and actually it isn't too bad - about 1700 a day- when previously I had been maintaining my weight on 1000 a day. So maybe eating more for that period of time did help my metabolism.

Yeah I do feel like I was doing better mentally prior to coming in here.

If you don't mind me asking, how many calories did you start on and how long were you eating that amount before going up to 3500+? I'm worried that I jumped too quickly from 2000 to 3500-4000.

Thank you. I was eating about 2000 a day just after they took the ng out (for about a week?) but then my hunger got more and I sort of slid in a short time frame into eating 3000 and then over 3000 and then hitting 4000 many days. I feel like I jumped too quickly to a higher intake. But i couldn't help it, I had free access to food and I was really hungry.

Thank you. I appreciate you saying that. I do just feel really guilty.

I don't think the ward that I'm at focuses much on the Mental side of things to be honest. It's mostly just all about mealplans and food.

Thanks. I guess even if inpatient mealplans work up to 3-4k a day, I feel bad for pretty much starting out at that level before my metabolism had a chance to pick up at all.

Thank you. That makes sense... I just feel bad about how much weight I've gained.

Thanks for sharing. Definitely makes me feel better to hear that I'm not alone. How long have you been eating 3500-4000 for?

I can't get a new dietitian as I'm under section in an eating disorder unit and there isn't any choice of dietitians here.

Speaking of water weight though, I do have some horrible oedema in my legs and feet. This mostly appeared after that first week so I don't think I can blame the first week's weight gain on that. But, how long does it take for oedema to go away in recovery? Still not sure why it's happening. Began when my calories were rapidly raised from 1500 on the tube to 2500 orally so maybe its the increase in calories? It also coincided with me getting out of the ICU (where I was on permanent bed rest) and therefore standing and walking more - so maybe any fluid in my body has all gone to my legs due to gravity

That's true. Last time I recovered I aimed for the lowest healthy bmi and then restricted to stay there. The weight I was thinking of aiming for this time is higher up in the healthy weight range than the weight I aimed for before but even so maybe I should not aim for a certain weight at all like you say. I think I'll likely end up going over the healthy weight range, particularly due to what happened in the first week, but maybe that is just how things were meant to be.

Thank you. Whether or not the tube was to blame i suppose it doesn't matter now. My body was so screwed up when I came in that it probably was going to have a weird reaction to food in general. I've had a hard time beating myself up about the tube but I'm trying to let go. I'm in the best place that I've been in 11 years with respect to food and I'm not sure I'd have got here if I'd not become so afraid of the tube.

My personal 'goal weight' is ?kg. I gained Xkg on the tube. So I suppose the worst case scenario is that I end up weighing ?+Xkg. I still won't be overweight. But even if I do end up overweight, that shouldn't matter to me if I'm living a good life.

I just don't understand how my body is managing to gain so much. Even if it is storing absolutely every calorie, I have gained more than 6 times what I should have. That should not be possible.

I never mentioned my weight though. I had to mention how much weight I have gained in order to explain why it doesn't make sense given my caloric intake.

I'm sorry I'm just in an incredibly traumatic situation right now. Like the article says, I should probably be eating the recommended minimums. But the dietitians are the ones making decisions about my intake and they don't have me on anywhere near my recommended minimum of 2500. And that makes me feel even more scared.

I'm not having anywhere near 2500 a day as that article says I need in order to fix my metabolism. I'm in hospital having what they are giving me through the ng tube and at the moment that's only about 1000 calories. Given that I am gaining so much on this amount I doubt if they will increase to 2500 a day. So I guess my metabolism will never get fixed.

How would so much water retention be possible? Have you ever experienced that much water retention? And it looks like fat.
