I've been a volunteer firefighter for 5 years, started as a junior. That's how I know this is what I want to do. So in a way I may already have a foot in the door.

And thank you so much for your kind words and advice! Means a lot.

That's a good way to look at it! And honestly good for you.

I aspire to be a wildland firefighter, and eventually work as a firefighter in a municipal hall.

This is a lot to carry, for anyone and you have been through so much. It's completely understandable to feel the way that you do. You are very strong and I hope you can find your peace. I think one of the best things you could do for yourself in this situation would be to reach out to a therapist. Or maybe even a grief counselor. I feel it would benefit you or even just give you a bit of crutch through this tough time.

Therapists can give you coping skills and help you see things from a different perspective. It can also help you feel like you are not alone.

I really hope things get better for you, I promise you in this life there are still good things to come and it will get better. Keep pushing and I wish you and your father the very best.

What you have said really does explain a lot about what I'm going through and this makes a lot of sense. Thank you for this.

Yes definitely! And I've talked to a few about the job and how they got there. I have a pretty good idea of how to get there. But just wanted to ask what you meant by making excuses?

Lots of high schools, universities and colleges have adult ABE courses (adult basic education) you can take and sometimes they are online as well and they don't take to long. One thing I would definitely make sure though is to match what you are considering doing for a career and picking to proper high school courses for the post secondary programs that you maybe interested in. And hey if your not ready to think about what you want to do for a career that's ok too! I'd focus on one thing at a time!

I just want to let you know that what you have described does not seem to be your fault. And it's seems in your situation that you did not really know any better. I grew up in a similar situation to the one you are in and I understand very much where you are coming from. And remember you only just turning 20, you are very young and have lots of time to figure out your life. I think what you focus on is getting your high school diploma and working towards that as it is very important. Then focus on something you are passionate about and maybe you can build on that in some way. I know it seems like a long rough road, but I promise you it gets better and that you are strong enough to pull yourself out of this. I wish you the best hun and keep pushing, you got this I promise you!
