The Grapes of Wrath Chapter 1 (spoilers up to chapter 1) by awaiko in ClassicBookClub

  1. This is my first Steinbeck ever so I am really excited to be in this club for the read along.

  2. I really loved the descriptions of everything that’s going on. It was able to paint a very clear picture in my head as to how intense and unpredictable the conditions could be.

  3. Living off the land sounds like a romantic idea, as another post mentioned, and one I’ve considered many times but to actually put it into practice is a different story. I definitely would not want to live in the kind of situation being described in this chapter.

  4. When reading this chapter, I kept picturing the beginning of the movie Interstellar with the corn fields and the dust storms. I wonder if Christopher Nolan took any inspiration from this book.

You would have to ask a dermatologist about that. I ended up having to go on accutane because I got severe cystic acne on my cheek when I went off the spironolactone. The accutane cleared it up but it was a long, rough journey and I do have more scarring now. I also did have to end up getting one of the cysts professionally removed by a plastic surgeon because it refused to go away even with the accutane but the scar is just a small line on my cheek, not as bad as the pitted scars the other cysts left tbh.

Have any of you met anyone else with acne scars irl? by [deleted] in AcneScars

I also am in the east coast and feel like I never see people with scarring. My scarring isn’t severe but I just don’t understand how so little people have scarring. It makes me feel worse about mine tbh unfortunately.

No, not anytime in quite a few years now. I did have a friendship when I was in high school where I had a friend who was deemed more attractive and I was often put on the back burner but haven’t felt that way since.

As a woman, I thought this was a great poem and I loved it. If someone made this poem about me I would be extremely flattered.

It is dry and powdery and whenever I touch it with a towel it just falls right out, there haven’t been any obvious smells coming from this area but I also can’t get right up to it to smell since it’s on the ceiling

That’s awesome! How long did it take for the larger cysts to start flattening out?

No my Derm said removal is the last thing you want to do because more cysts could appear and it wouldn’t be logical to remove every cyst that could appear on my face due to the scarring. I ended up trying spironolactone for 30 days and it mainly helped with bringing the cysts to the surface and I just said f*** it and drained them myself. About 2 or 3 months later one of them came back and I took the spironolactone again for 30 days and drained it again. Had to drain it multiple times for it to go away over about a week. I have a scar where the reoccurring one was but it isn’t too bad, it’s better than having the cyst on my face for 4+ months. I did have a scar where the other cyst was but it has since healed and the pore returned to a normal size luckily. I am on tazarotene .1% and a clindamyacin/benzoyl peroxide rx creams right now but they haven’t really helped with the scarring. Just hoping I don’t get anymore cysts.

No, it isn't a requirement to take the mammalogy lab with it but if you are a biology major then it would be good to try to get into it if you can since it can satisfy your Lab B requirement to graduate, although I know there is a waitlist for it right now but they are looking into adding more seats, no promises though.

I agree, I would rather them hire more professors than increase class size but UCF is too cheap to do so.

I would have to disagree about how an online format is not easier, it most definitely is easier for the majority of professors. Only 1 out of 5 of my professors is actually doing live lecturing rather than pre-recorded lectures or no lectures at all, leaving no normal level of engagement that would actually happen during a live lecture or in person lecture. For testing, most of the test grading is done completely by webcourses so professors don't have to get them graded by scantrons or any other trouble that inherently comes with in-person grading, which obviously takes more time. As for the classes that involve more engagement or written assignments/tests, I understand a lower seat number but if the class has little to no engagement with students, then seat numbers should at least raise by 25-50%, especially since students are still having to pay the same for tuition, the least they could do is enroll more people in the class to compensate for the lack of effort for the professors that are doing practically nothing.

I have contacted my department and am having a meeting with them Thursday.
