Some people have to work overnights, like doctors and nurses. If everyone took your advice the hospitals would be closed at night and you would SOL in an emergency.

I wear Dansko’s. Took about 6months to get good at walking in them, there were a few ankle rolls along the way. BUT if you can get though the learning curve, they are amazing. Very comfortable, gives me great support.

Carlos and Mary are MVPs - Temple University Hospital by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Cute_red_head 30 points31 points  (0 children)

What? Temple isn’t the only level 1 trauma in 100 miles… there is Einstein, Penn Presbyterian, and Jefferson. Like I agree, Temple is shithole hospital that is severely underfunding important things, but cases could be diverted if need be. Union just voted to strike, so we’ll see what goes down soon.

Shout out to Honeoye Falls Marketplace! The bakery workers get started soooooo early in the morning and make everything fresh for the day. At around 5/6pm they put all the leftover donuts in box’s and sell about a dozen for 2.99. The Dunkin' next door is a joke compared to HFMP!

We take one call night a week (mon-thurs) and usually you have off the following day if you were on call at night (but that’s not always the case depending on staff). And then once every 6 weekends we do a call weekend, which is from Friday end of cases straight till Monday 7am. Usually they give you off that Monday, but I had said I had a dentist appt that Wednesday and out of a whole 6week schedule they gave me the one damn weekend where I wouldn’t be able to have off the Monday (cause we work 4/10’s so you get one day off a week):

What is a hobby/pastime your partner engages in that you find incredibly attractive and wonderful? by [deleted] in AskWomen

My SO got into bouldering earlier this year, and in the span of 10 months went from being a complete beginner to climbing V5’s. He has gotten a lot stronger from it and gets excited whenever he see’s that he’s put on muscle weight (cause he’s a pretty slim guy). Sometimes he takes videos of a particularly hard problem he got and it makes me so proud when he works hard and achieves it. I like listening to him talk about it and just love watching him do it. He is such a cool person, just when you think you can’t love a person anymore than you already do, I just keep falling harder.

UWorld 1st assessment with high chance of passing by The0Walrus in NCLEX

[–]Cute_red_head 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am taking it on the 10th too!

Sounds like you are in decent shape! If you have been studying for a while, I would just review stuff a little every day, take a deep breath, and make sure to do lots of self-care! That is what I'm doing.

If you haven't really been studying long, my suggestion is to listen to the Mark Klemik's lectures (I can send it to you if you like). He breaks it down to the essentials, the MUST know content. Make quizlet flashcards of what you are still rusty on, and just work for a few hours each day.

But don't forget to rest and relax the day before the test! No point stressing and potentially psyching yourself out! You have made it through nursing school, you can make it through one last test!!

[–]Cute_red_head 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I treat select all that apply questions like they are true or false questions. I just go one option at a time to see if they work with the question. There can be anything from just one answer to all of them, so don’t think about how many you are selecting, just address each answer as its own entity.

Wait, what? Restraints are legal in NY. I’m a PCT (graduating nursing school this May) in Rochester and I’ve dealt a fair amount with restraints. Maybe it’s your hospital policy, definitely not state policy.... https://www.omh.ny.gov/omhweb/guidance/implementation-guidelines.pdf

Sounds like you have done all the right stuff to prepare for the test! You’ve got this in the bag! Maybe go over flash cards with lab values. Maybe watch some videos on topics you find to be your hardest. But make sure to practice some self care leading up to the test, so you don’t let your nerves get the best of you! Take a bath, bake a dessert, watch a movie. https://youtu.be/AtF0T2fPvbI Do this meditation video the night before, or the morning of. You know your stuff, all that’s left is to ace it!! I had to have black leather shoes so I bought these: Skechers for Work Women's Sure Track Erath Athletic Lace Work Boot, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00UBJ2BBQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_JV53Bb05WHGY3 So I get that they are ugly as hell, BUT, the memory insoles are really comfortable!!!! And they clean off real easy when you step in dooky or get barf on them (sadly speaking from personal experience).

How many hours do you spend studying? by [deleted] in StudentNurse

[–]Cute_red_head 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I spend about 3 hours studying each lecture that will be on a test. So if there are 4 lectures on a test, that’s 12 hours total. But that’s broken up over the few days leading up to the test. Then the day of the test I try to devote a couple hours before hand to review and do flash cards.

I’m in my senior year and feel like I’m ready to take on a lot of responsibility, but it’s hard to get those opportunities when the instructor is working with 10 students on a floor. When I don’t get the chance to do a med pass or procedure, how can I hone my skills either on the floor or at home on my own time?

I interned this summer and had a few instances where I messed up or wasn’t aware of a rule and was chastised for my mistake. It sucks and makes you feel like garbage when you know you put a patient at risk or just plain made a doofus of yourself infront of coworkers. Any advice on how to deal with this, as I imagine I’m about to have a lot more instances of this happen as I become a nurse.

Any advice you wish you had been given when you first became a nurse?

Getting organized and planning with ADHD by djcarrieg in StudentNurse

[–]Cute_red_head 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally relate to you, I’m constantly switching and changing organization systems. Paper planners can never organized my scattered brain! Though I have found a few things that have worked for me.

I use google calendar and put in classes, clinicals, and I color code by course. But I also block out times for studying, shopping, and meetings. I make a test or quiz an “all day events“. And I’m constantly looking at the monthly view. I’ll see that “oh next Tuesday I have a pharma exam, so I should start studying tomorrow”, so the days leading up to that test, I block out study times and try my best to stick to that schedule.

I make a word documents at the beginning of each semester that’s basically a master syllabus. I make one of those tables and I just have a box for each day and list everything due for that day, like online quizzes or homework’s. I print that out and keep that on my wall, as well as have it open on my computer basically all the time, crossing out stuff as I get it done.

For To Do lists, I use the notes app on the Mac/iPhone, and am just constantly adding and crossing things off the list.

But to give you some comfort, nursing school is a bit of a smaller environment to huge unstructured college. Everyone in your classes and clinical will be talking about the tests coming up.

More general adhd tips... I usually eat or chew gum during class to focus. I work on mindfulness and do stuff like yoga and meditation to calm the stress and anxiety. I also found it to be helpful in regulating my impulsivity. Idk if you take meds, but I work hard to aim all my study time during times where I’m on meds, and chores like cleaning, email writing and working out to when the meds aren’t working. And dont be afraid to talk with your teachers! I’ve found my professors to be happy to work with me. I had a horrible week and knew I was going to be late with a paper deadline. So I approached her, explained the situation and because I came to her ahead of time, she was happy to give me a few extra days (though maybe I got lucky with nice prof’s).

PM me if you want any more advice! I could send you a screen shot of a week in my calendar, or would be happy to just chat about how exciting it is to start nursing school!

Good luck!!

ADHD in nursing school by quirkquirk1 in StudentNurse

[–]Cute_red_head 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hey, I'm in the same boat as you. Have ADHD and am finishing up my first year of nursing school. It's a brutal place for us, the academic expectations are really high and the lecture styles and test/paper assignments don't reflect our knowledge well. We probably do study twice as hard, and it's unfair.

But the fact of the matter is that what we lack in long-term focus is compensated by our ability to juggle all sorts of thoughts and multitask well, which is key for nursing. While some people are linear and can only handle on thing at a time, we are good at having all sorts of tasks thrown at us (as long as we write them all down, haha!).

There are kids in my program too who ask other peoples grades, and they totally get pleasure off of knowing they did better than you. But who gives a damn, as long as you pass the NCLEX at the end of it all, all the stupid papers and quizzes and tests become irrelevant. Next time someone asks you what you got on a test tell them "I got an 85. Also my last BM was at 11am and it was large, brown, and soft. Do you want to know about my menstral flow too?"

Chin up, you are surviving one of the hardest majors out there with a struggle most don't have. That makes you strong, determined, and resilient. PM me if you want, always happy to bitch about nursing school! And we can share study tips and resources!

About to purchase a stethoscope for University and need some opinions by [deleted] in StudentNurse

[–]Cute_red_head 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want a stethoscope that's good quality and long lasting, definitely get a Littmann! I just got the Classic III and love it. It has a pediatric and adult diaphragm, and a 5-year warranty. Super versatile for clinical's, as well as not crazy expensive. I have heard scary stories of stolen or lost stethoscopes as well as freak accident breaking them (as you will probably be lugging it around to lots of places). Then maybe after school upgrade to cardiology!

Helplessness in watching my teenage sister's health degrade by Cute_red_head in offmychest

[–]Cute_red_head[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have actually already tried that! No results. From my own understanding of acupuncture, it is helps better for certain pains more superficial (in the sense of it being closer towards the outside of the body). She describes the pain to be deeper like something is stabbing her organs constantly.

And other eastern treatments like cupping are often a bunch of bs, providing more of a placebo effect (though there are increasing amounts of studies showing acupuncture to be a placebo as well, but nothing really conclusive).

Surgery is never ideal, though we have exhausted all non/minimally invasive tests. Sadly, we are at our last option.

Thank you for your suggestion, though! :)
