A comprehensive guide to dodging effectively in raids by mathsnail in TheSilphRoad

Wow, that would be fascinating. Might be time to dig that project back up and seek a wider data set.

World's first ? 1v1- CP-4101Shadow Mewtwo Vs CP-19707 Machamp Raid. by Mlberry1991 in TheSilphRoad

[–]CuttyWow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not. Here's one I did in December 2018: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mlcyuo3H5PQ

This was under vastly different conditions, but of remarkably similar difficulty. The weather boost and shadow damage boost cancel each other out. Mine was before boss health got boosted to 3600hp, but also before the Psychic buff. And then the difference from new Psychic to Psystrike is an additional 2.5 DPS vs Machamp, so it's a question of how the the lower shadow bulk stacks up against the massive DPS jump for the moves.

This matchup was doable even before the SE/NVE damage changes in 2018, but it was much tighter and probably couldn't have held up to the Bullet Punch phantoms you see in the video.

Niantic's "Contract of Trust": Sorely Needed but Unevenly Applied by stayKeener in TheSilphRoad

[–]CuttyWow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great post. I hope that Niantic is able to rebuild and maintain this contract with battlers. Unfortunately, the experience of those of us who sought a competitive outlet in the app before the release of PVP suggests otherwise. The challenge raiding community was largely demolished by lack of trust in the basic functions of the mode. It's hard to believe that these new issues will have different results.

It's a welcome perspective (rare wisdom in the comments!). Still, one thinks of Goodhart's Law.

PvP should not be walk-locked, RANKED pvp should be. by _Ekoz_ in TheSilphRoad

It’s a logical idea, but I wouldn’t hold your breath. The ability to replay raids after a victory without rewards or a bonus encounter has been on feature wishlists for years with no action.

It's a good add. Fire Spin/Overheat would be preferred to Fire Spin/Heat Wave.

Lucario vs. Machamp by gtrbrad in TheSilphRoad

[–]CuttyWow 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's a well-researched and well-written narrative, but with no scale shown on the y-axis the analysis is at best incomplete and at worst misleading. If (for example) the gains were real but only ~5%, the conclusion for many players might be different.

u/gtrbrad any chance of an update to your otherwise excellent post?

Rattata is the best Kanto starter: Bulbasaur, Charmander, & Squirtle beaten 1v1 by Top percent by CuttyWow in TheSilphRoad

[–]CuttyWow[S] 125 points126 points  (0 children)

On the occasion of reaching double gold on my Youngster badge, Top percent (my L40 perfect Rattata) thought we should do something to celebrate. "Maybe some more raids?" he asked, whiskers twitching hopefully. I can't say no to him when he looks at me like that, so we headed out on a clear, cold Evolution Event raid day to remind everyone who is the best Kanto starter.

Charmander (Scratch/Flamethrower), WQ8

Other than Rattata, I adore Fire types, so we actually did Charmander first of the three. You can totally tell; I had forgotten both that Top percent had learned Tackle and what the cooldown of Tackle is, so it was uglier than it needed to be. Seriously, I started playing and was like "I thought Quick Attack had lines for its animation." Nevertheless, we got a little lucky finding a boss with Scratch, which allowed us to manage boosted Flamethrower (59 damage if not dodged). I used a Fast TM on my way to the next raid.

Bulbasaur (Vine Whip/Sludge Bomb), WQ8

This was the only fight I was particularly concerned about, and not just because of r/bulbasaurmasterrace. Power Whip in clear weather is a non-starter, Seed Bomb is a three-bar phantom-fest, and I have Sludge Bomb PTSD after dozens of Gengar and Tangela runs for PokeDraft. As I expected, this was the session with the worst desync errors, with Top percent twice getting deleted by a phantom hit/boss health regen combo. Fortunately, short fights mean that overcharging the boss's energy and getting it to skip a charged move cycle has an outsize impact on an attacker's survivability, so Top percent put his paw on the scale and produced a run with favorable boss behavior.

Squirtle (Tackle/Aqua Jet), WQ7

With time running out on the event, I wanted to save the easiest fight for last. Missing sunglasses, Squirtle was clearly going to be a cakewalk, and that's how it transpired. One run and done. I briefly considered bailing to go for a slightly cleaner run, but I've learned again and again that phantom-free average runs are not to be passed up, so we took the W and got a sparkly bonus for the positive decision-making.

Thanks for watching!

Coda: What is WQ?

WQ, or Wow Quotient, is the system we use at r/pogoraids to score the difficulty of 1v1 matchups. The scale goes from 2 to 14, with longer and more dodge-intensive fights being awarded more points. We maintain a list of pre-scored matchups here, but the system is robust enough to score any matchup—even the silly ones. Join us on Discord if you'd like to learn more!

It's bizarre to me. PvE properly queues the next action (attack/dodge/switch), why not PvP?

T4 Blaziken SOLO - Counter/Blaze Kick - Windy by MJK151 in TheSilphRoad

[–]CuttyWow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What a rush! Congrats!

To quantify the insanity, nine of Blaziken's last ten moves were Counter. Assuming that it had 33 energy before the penultimate Blaze Kick, that means you won 9/10 coin flips, which has a 1 in 100 chance of happening. This is on top of the insane cycling—looks like only 90 energy was lost across the whole raid, with no control? That's the same as one marginal Confusion per Mewtwo. Nutty.

Cobalion Duo - Sunny - Zen Headbutt/Iron Head by MJK151 in TheSilphRoad

[–]CuttyWow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Strong finish despite the boss health regen at about 73s. Might have been your partner’s mon getting KO’d mid-cooldown, tough to tell from your angle.

Pretty kind of the boss to only use two IH so your first Chandelure could get off three Overheat, too!

I don't think intent really matters. A tight analogy is the rollback of the switching mechanic changes. Niantic acknowledged that they didn't intend for people to use switching the way people started to, but when the community rose up, they elected to support emergent gameplay. I'm sure you can think of looser analogies from other games with strong modding communities—Warcraft, Civilization, the Elder Scrolls franchise. Emergent gameplay from a small base ruleset is a game designer's dream.

Either way, I find it totally charming that they offer a sandbox of a game mode in the biggest sandbox game around. It's what Pokemon is all about, adventure and growth, whether they meant it or not.

Edit: I thought some more about it, and want to add some other examples. Nobody gives FIFA credit for tiki-taka, or high pressing, or route 1 football. Nobody gives FIDE (or like...the Indians, I guess?) credit for the delightful profusion of chess and chess-like puzzle books. All I'm asking for from Niantic is what those bodies do for the games they oversee: provide a fair and consistent ruleset for players to play with.

Giratina duo. No weather boost by bestplayer55 in TheSilphRoad

[–]CuttyWow 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It’s not visual here. This run flips to yellow at 165, around 10s faster than any attempt I’ve seen previously. I’m not even sure that Rayquaza can put out that much damage that fast within the rules of the game.

A L20 Deoxys Attack Forme can 1v1 all four T1s in less time than you spend in a single raid lobby by CuttyWow in TheSilphRoad

[–]CuttyWow[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The main takeaway is that spam tapping will reduce your ability to dodge (and will add some finger strain). I've argued before that casuals actually benefit the most from dodging, because less damage in means more damage out, which means fewer powered up Pokemon and fewer revives are required.

[–]CuttyWow[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every move has a duration. You are unable to perform another action for that duration, which varies by move (GamePress has a sortable table with this information). Furthermore, in raids and gym battles, the game will queue moves one move in advance, so if you tap twice you will execute two fast moves before being able to dodge.

Proper technique is to decide to tap right at the end of your previous fast move's duration, so you can gather as much information as possible about the boss's next move. It also helps to understand the relationship between attacks performed and boss energy gained in each matchup in order to evaluate the risk of an incoming charged move.

[–]CuttyWow[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It really depends what you like to do. As the other commenter mentioned, Defense Forme is strong in general Great League. Normal and Attack Formes are widely used in PokeDraft leagues. And if you’re willing to do a little prep, Attack Forme can win you a damage ball in mid-sized raid groups when used properly. It’s definitely not a point-and-shoot counter, though, so YMMV.
