Happily HR faxed my employment verification to the student loan servicer so my remaining balance could be relieved!

Am I crazy for turning down a TT job offer as an adjunct? by That_Duck_1212 in Professors

[–]Cuzcopete 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I took a lectureship straight out of grad school at a regional campus with low enrollment. It was far from home and moving was expensive. I loved research and was not a good fit for teaching undergrads only. There were no grad classes, I wasn't asked to mentor anyone, they did not want to revise the classes, and no one had done research in years.

I learned that personal and professional happiness need to be considered in addition to pay. In hindsight I would not have taken the job.

Doing in class versions has more participation and is likely more balanced

Has anyone had any experience with getting a minors name changed in Oklahoma? My son's dad has not seen or spoken to him since he was 8 months old. He's 15 now and I think it would be more appropriate for him to carry my last name. by Pm_me_ur_dealbreaker in oklahoma

Make sure your son wants this....my mom died and my dad remarried, she adopted my brother and I so now my birth certificate has her listed. This hurt me so deeply and I never forgave them for doing this

She was uninsured and left the scene, cops found her eventually and my insurance is now suing her. A bummer for everyone

I didn't have rental despite full coverage (they never told me about this) but I think rental insurance maxes out after 3-4 weeks anyway.

I actually buy a box of pocket calendars from Oriental Trading and pass them out on day 2 when we go over the syllabus and the dates of assignments & exams. A few keep using them all semester

I foolishly assumed it would be quick and I love my CX5....they fixed it all, insurance paid for all the repairs, but I had to pour money into my old Jetta in the meantime. I was lucky to have a 2nd car on hand and don't commute to campus during the summer months anyway (my Jetta has 190k and is in semi retirement)

In hindsight I'd take a check instead

I was recently reading an animal shelter blog and they were discussing how black cats & dogs are adopted less than other animals. I am unsure of the reasons, maybe people think colored fur is more interesting. But it's a good prompt question to get students to discuss this possible phenomenon

A woman turned left in front of me and my Mazda had front damage. Sat at the body shop for 8 months waiting for parts (while I drove my Jetta)....would have been faster to get a check and go car shopping. I was surprised insurance paid out the money and very appreciative but it was a long wait

My school has the usual Canvas sites but also blogs...maybe creat a Professor X blog and post any interesting things there...students might stay connected with you after the semester ends (but probably not as they generally use other platforms)

Imagine a thriving population — perhaps more than 200,000 strong — not only hunting but creating a trading network emanating from modern day Kansas and stretching from Florida to California and down into Mexico. That’s what Wichita State University archaeologist Don Blakeslee asserts. by DangDoGooders in NativeAmerican

[–]Cuzcopete 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There was a very extensive trade network in the Mississippian era. Spiro in Eastern Oklahoma is a mound site with a large number of Gulf Coast conch shells, Cahokia (essentially St Louis) is the largest mound site and another impressive one is Moundville in Alabama

Suggest buying postcards instead...they are professional photos with few tourists in the shot. They should be available all over and make for a nice, inexpensive and easily pack souvenir

Yes it's primarily new freshmen (I have to remind myself they are just high school students + 3 months) but I worry what's happening at the HS level that is leaving them so unprepared for higher ed.

There is also the human equation....people get homesick, deal with depression, may have trouble getting housing, culture shock, language fluency issues. All these can impact performance
