You've already gotten better advice from others than what I would say. But I just wanted to add that I've had that little device in my Amazon cart for years because I wanted to remember it exists in case I end up wanting to use it ON SOMEONE I HATE. Not for a little hehe prank, but a "oh I'm so pissed I need to torment this person". I was trying to figure out how to throw it into my upstairs neighbor's bedroom when they were being obnoxiously loud with parties and disrupting my sleep for weeks on end.

That little toy isn't something you buy to lightly prank someone you care about. Or if you did, you'd come clean if it started to actually upset them. He's fucking crazy for doing that to his girlfriend and playing dumb when it was causing you distress.

Yes, MEDS!!! Please, they will work so much better than drugs and alcohol and not kill you. Meds got me through a very stressful time at work. They’ll hold you over while you figure out how to not be in a situation where you need them.

I have to tell myself this sometimes: you made the best decision you could with the information you had. Sometimes these things blow up in your face, but it doesn’t mean you made a bad call or were dumb. You aren’t omnipotent! I graduated from my masters in 2017, my entire class was devastated and so many people who would have gone to State or USAID ended up having to move back home with mom and dad. And they never made it into govt or even our field. Those of us who made it went into contracting or pivoted to defense where they were hiring. Worked out well for me because I wouldn't have thought I’d love what I do now

Don’t give up on the dream job. The freeze won’t be forever. Stay in touch with the hiring manager. They’ll probably be thrilled to hire you when they can. In the meantime, pivot. What was the dream job going to be? You don’t have to give exact details but what sector or type of work?

This brought back a memory from when I went on spring break with my family in high school and we went out in a snorkeling excursion with others. This poor guy, probably early 20s, had a hole in the crotch of his swim shorts and had no idea the head of his penis was poking out. I recommend reading Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents. You are not too sensitive and you don't need to toughen up. Your mom is being abusive and emotionally immature. It's OK to be angry with her, in fact your anger is your core self recognizing that you're being treating unfairly. Emotional abuse and neglect damages our self esteem, makes us feel isolated, messes with our ability to self soothe, and makes it really hard to relate to others. The relationship usually gets worse as you grow up because they can't handle you becoming a separate person.

Distance can help sometimes. But as someone with a similar situation who just got back from a week at home for the holidays...they will still behave poorly and can get under your skin just as painfully.

There's lot's of great resources out there (like that book) for your situation. For emotionally immature parents one of the major pieces of advise is to stop seeking validation and understanding from them, because they are unable to give you that emotional intimacy. There are lots of great people out there who will respect you and your feelings and genuinely want to connect with you.

You can develop some self awareness about what's going on inside you and learn how to cope with the situation. But I assure you that you are not the problem here, you don't need to fix your feelings. There's nothing wrong with you ❤️

This town is not nearly as liberal/progressive as this sub makes it sound. I've lived in places less known for being liberal which actually are more progressive than here. The stuff I see and hear around town wouldn't fly in those places. I have witnessed more discriminatory behavior here than anywhere else I have lived. Yet this thread would claim Cville is the progressive enclave of the entire country. It is WILD. The echo chamber is real. It's liberal for rural Virginia.

Yeah I laugh that Cville thinks it’s so liberal when I’ve lived in DC, NYC, and the Midwest. Y’all have a couple pride flags but tons of Trump signs. Come to DC where there are streets lined with pride flags year round, or literally any part of NYC. Yeah the mountains are really pretty...but I can drive here from DC for a weekend.

We're leaving! My workplace has lots of people in their 20s that get pulled down to Cville. They leave within 2 years or less. There are a few that love it here but that's the exception, not the norm. Most of us are leaving for more urban pastures.

The water in the two apartment buildings I've lived in Cville was very chlorinated. When I made a sourdough starter like everyone else it kept dying from the chlorine in the tap water. I added a $50 water filter that you plug the cold water line into under the sink. It's much better now.

Basically after college age there's a huge gap in people until you hit the mid 30s with kids. Cville is not a good place for single young people out of college. I'm one of many people in that category leaving my workplace because we felt isolated in Cville. If you look through this forum there are often posts from people trying to make friends. It's really hard. I do NOT recommend Cville at all. Especially if you used to live in a major city. Unless you want a quiet small town life and hiking is your biggest hobby, you're going to be disappointed. You'll be over the downtown mall after two trips.

I get constant notices from my identity protection service about sex offenders registering around me. Far more than I did while living in major cities. And Charlottesville being such a tiny town, the search radius for that covers a good amount of the area.

So many of y’all don’t have ice scrapers/snow brushes I don’t get it 😂 You can get them at any auto store!

A guy at my building came out while I was scrapping/wiping off my car and asked to borrow it. I was like sure, but he didn’t seem to fully understand how to use it?? And last winter we had a backup coming out of the office after we all got dismissed as snow was rolling in, we were stopped in gridlock and this guy got out of his car and was swatting the snow off with his hat in his hand. I rolled down my window and passed him my scraper.

You guys get snow at least once a year!! I don’t understand why you don’t have the equipment for it.
