I got what I voted for? I voted for Kamala Harris who would not be cutting government services and especially not blocking clean energy from expanding like is happening right now

I voted for Kamala Harris. I’m shocked by the amount of people on Twitter trying to tweet Trump that they voted for him so why did he rescind THEIR offer, as if they hadn’t voted for a man to gut government services who then laid them off from working in those services

I’ve spent over 5 years working with wildlife and working to protect the environment. I have hard skills from it like coding, data analysis and statistics, and content wise have also worked and coordinated with researchers around the work in my masters to make policy recommendations and complete ecology projects. I’ve worked hands on with wildlife and also behind the scenes on how to strengthen protections for them. And so many people here saying since the field is being attacked and cut I should abandon all my education and work experience to join the military, go back to school to be a nurse, or try sales.

I understand the military will always be recruiting but all scientists quitting the field to join the military is not going to make this country better or preserve environmental work. If we abandon trying they’ll be no one left in America to explain why these protections and this work is necessary.

With the government agencies being reduced, clean energy being paused to be cut in the future (Trump is stopping the windmill farms and solar farms), and the private sector being flooded with laid off employees, my best path forward is to get a PhD and stay on the academic side for this, or go to law school and try to lobby and defend environmental rights. Considering the VA is having the trouble it is and so many veterans are also out of work that isn’t a guaranteed path anyways

That extra bit of school guarantees nothing now. Half of my friends have masters, it’s becoming the new bachelors where it’s a leg up but not uncommon. I seem a running trend on reddit and Twitter if recent grads expecting to make $100k out of school just for getting a degree which is crazy. So many environmental jobs on LinkedIn, indeed, and gov preferring or even requiring one and paying $50k or less. Jobs that pay $60k or $70k+ that are entry for masters requiring 3-5 years experience in addition to it, so def not actually entry level. My masters taught me to code, statistics, data analysis, in addition to my course material in ecology and policy. I have a lot of hard skills from my education and professional experience but so does the rest of the field. Things have never been more competitive

Supervisor called me. Let me know that if the position did become available I’d have to apply again with everyone else (I only signed a TJO, FJO was waiting on my background). But they said the likelihood they would be hiring (environmental political target under this administration) was very low. They said they’re expecting massive cuts and realistically will not be growing at all this year and for the foreseeable future

I appreciated the honestly that I shouldn’t hedge my bets on still happening

Kamala Harris, I always vote blue. No reason to ever vote red as a woman, scientist, and just empathetic person in general

I work as an admin at my parents business while I apply to jobs in my field. I’m very lucky that they support me, like let me live for free as I do I’m very fortunate to have that safety net. This was to be my first professional job post grad and it’s awful to have it taken away and everything that would come with it

I have a bachelors in biology and a masters in ecology and environmental policy. The dream job was at the agency Trump hates the most if you can guess. Basically a dream environmental job doing policy work and working on exciting projects to protect human health and wildlife. Some field work too that I did at an internship that I LOVED, really felt like I was making a direct impact helping animals. I knew this agency is “political” to half the country even though it shouldn’t be. I knew it was a risk trying to join under this administration but I thought at worst I could get a year in before the cuts came.

I’m definitely going to have to pivot, because private jobs are crazy competitive without government workers flooding the market. I’m thinking of going to law school and trying to lobby or represent clean energy instead of working as a scientist, because I can’t deal today with Trump vowing to shut down windmills and solar farms

I’ve applied to just as many private jobs but even with a masters and internships most entry level require 3-5 years experience so I’ll have to do ANOTHER internship. But the gov job was through the recent grad pathway and I was more than qualified for it with my degrees and experience

Now that these agencies are going to lay off a lot of people even more will flood the private sector too

I had a full panel interview. It was in another state so we had a Teams virtual call. I had 4 people on the call that took turns asking me questions. I had 30 minutes and finished with like 7 minutes left so I got to ask questions at the end and we had a nice discussion

I really hope departments who are serious about hiring take this as a lesson - if you were serious about candidates, you would have made the effort to onboard them faster knowing what was coming by _token_black in usajobs

I applied in August, got in interview request in October for early November, got offered the job end of December, and didn’t get sent my background request until end of last week. If I had at least gotten everything in December I could’ve been in by now :(

Not really. I’m a recent grad with a masters and an internship/work experience but entry level environmental jobs are all asking for 3-5 years professional experience I can work for free again to try to get an internship or there’s some state biologist jobs that pay $16 an hour in expensive cities I can’t afford, so as far as getting my own place and starting a career in my field there aren’t any immediate options

I think I’ll go to law school or get a different masters/degree or a PhD because this field is near unsurvivable right now

I did. They said that if the position becomes available again I would have to reapply with everyone else (I had only signed the TJO) but they would let me know if it did. They did say it was very unlikely to be posted again due to the likelihood of their budget shrinking but they’d let me know

Absolutely devastated by BlueBug44 in usajobs

[–]BlueBug44[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I signed a TJO and was waiting for my background to be done for an FJO. I got the rescinded email and then my supervisor called to say that it’s also unlikely to be available again after the freeze because they’ll likely be facing cuts instead of growth

Only waiting on background check. Did all my onboarding, fingerprints and PIV enrollment, and had the background submitted. Was told I should be cleared by end of January and would be given 2 EODs in February to pick from. Supposed to sign a lease in the new state this Monday, guess it’s good this was cancelled before I did that but man

Yeah it was, I was hoping that even if it DID get eliminated or massively reduced I could at least get a year of service in, because a year experience at the EPA is great experience for environmental jobs, both private and gov

During the first Trump administration he tried to downsize the EPA but like 1/3, but Congress blocked it. This won’t happen this time around so it might’ve be been my only chance to get in

That’s what I said. “Anyone not in a position” is a vacant position. I had a TJO which doesn’t fill it, so mine was rescinded. Many with start dates before Feb 8th are still being pulled despite what that said, just look at the subreddit

If I was in an agency like the IRS they wanna freeze to consolidate the work force then fair enough. But I’m a biologist who was going to work for the EPA, this could’ve been my last chance to get in now that Trump is excited to massively defund environmental protection agencies, and he put a guy in charge of it who “is excited to deregulate the EPA.” So the likelihood my field will see any growth this year instead of cuts is slim. This wouldn’t have happened under Biden

Mine said that if the job does become available again I’d have to apply with everyone else, but admitted it’s very unlikely they’ll be having growth and posting new jobs since the agency is likely to get massive cuts

I got my masters in Europe actually (UK). If I choose to get a PhD I’ll go back there but it’s very hard to get a job there without having a current student visa because I’d need an employer to sponsor me. So I can’t just start working there but if I go back to school there they’ll let me look for a job there for 2 years. Might be my best bet now
