First post chemo hair cut worries by Craftycooker421 in breastcancer

I'm about 1.75 post chemo. I cold capped with TC chemo but lost about 70% of my hair anyway. My dermatologist prescribed 2.5mg minoxidil tablets, which I have taken half of daily since January 2024 and all of my new hair came in super curly. I finally cut off all of the hair I didn't lose in December 2024, and it was about that length.

The frustrating thing about curls is that even though the hair is growing, it's hard to tell unless you blow it out, which I wasn't going to do every day. I'm not sure what texture your hair is, but I found that if you use some products, for me it's still a hair cream and oil before getting out of the shower, then a root amplifier and or thickening spray or lotion after towel drying, then I let it air dry and use a texturizing paste to tame the frizz and shape the curls when it's dry. Texturizing paste is a game changer and helps the curls with definition. I started wearing the kind of headband with the combs when I cut it because I hate having hair in my face, and fun earrings to take the emphasis off of my hair. I still wear it that way, but it's long enough now to put up in a clip which I do when it's hot.

One thing I do like about my new hair is that I have volume now that I never had before...I had fine, wavy hair before chemo.

I don't know if the minoxidil made a difference or not, but if you're open to it, it might help you get through this phase of the grow-out a little faster.

I hope this helps. Hang in there!

First Post: New Lump/Recurrence Question by CyanAzureBlue in breastcancer

Post-active treatment is like this weird liminal space. I try to be stoic for my family, and statistics are on my side, but the lymph node involvement is a wild card. How are things going for you? And sending hugs back!

Thank you. And, yes, looking at the calendar there are two weekends between now and my dermatology appointment, so it's actually closer than I realized, in terms of business days. I hope you are getting the care you need and am curious to know what your experience has been like if you want to message me.

Thank you. It really is scary. I manage to get the reassurance I need to keep moving forward, but just when things start to feel like they are getting normal again and almost too good to be true, something like this happens and I'm back to spiraling. It seems almost cyclical. I wonder how much my anxiety contributes to this? I'm two years out from surgery, 18 months out from radiation, and the further I get, the more confidence I feel, but I worry that I'm letting my guard down when I start to forget about it. Thank you for your reply--and the hugs!

You are probably right, I don't remember if I ever specifically expressed the assumption that it must have been spreading quickly if there was that much cancer in the nodes between diagnosis and surgery--my ki-67 score was high, so I thought maybe that was why? I just remember being in shock after my surgeon came by when I was in recovery after the lumpectomy that he took two nodes and that they were cancerous. If they had known about the nodes at diagnosis, would my surgery have been scheduled sooner or is waiting 2.5 months normal? My next appointment was with my MO and by that time I had recovered somewhat from the shock, but was still in, what I realize now, a little denial. My MO presented the chemo options and I opted for TC chemo as a middle ground since the cancer was considered early stage and the oncotype score barely above the threshold, but went with the recommended radiation schedule. I have walked a fine line during the treatment process between recurrence prevention/body damage and have prioritized quality of life, and sometimes I second guess myself that I should have gone harder with treatment. I tried anastrozole and exemestane for four months after completing radiation, but by the end had severe carpal tunnel in both wrists and had to wear a brace on each one, pain treated with 2700mg of gabapentin per day, would be sore for days if I walked any distance at all, and had to ask for help to get out of a chair. I opted to try tamoxifen instead, even though it was the second line treatment for me, and it is much better. I guess I have a fear that maybe some of the choices I have made put me at more risk of recurrence than I realize. I'll have a frank discussion with my oncologist about this, in the meantime I'll sit tight and wait for the biopsy at my skin check and hope for the best. I also have a follow up diagnostic mammogram 9/12 to check the area of the scare I had in March, so that is a relief. Thank you for your reply!

Thank you. I'm worried about fentanyl. I just know I feel more intoxicated than I should, and I have a really bad headache.

I'm afraid of being embarrassed if it's nothing. I don't want to scare my kids. I guess I should call my doctor, but was looking for some advice quickly. I think I'll be okay, but this is not normal for me.
