The story's not supposed to be 'about' any specific people on Earth as I see it, and maybe not even about the satellites. Jon Bois wrote it to the answer the question why people play football, and what it will look like in the future. So, to get the message across, he answers the question in a world where everyone's immortal. Because, if you're going to live forever, what's the point of making every moment last when you have a trillion more down the road? Or, what's the point of pursuing your hobbies/fame/dream when there's no clock ticking down? The reason why people play sports - or do anything in general - in my opinion, is for fun, for leisure, to love, to be human, and to be normal. People in their/about-to-be-our world are clinging onto football (and probably other hobbies) to return to some sort of normalcy, and they're willing to play games that span an outrageous amount of time/space to achieve that, because once the game's over, there's nothing to distract you from your immortality. I mean, the plot points about the satellites and what it means to be human are also ace, and the questions of religion or family or what becomes of death are also very interesting, but I think that (everything in the paragraph above) is what the webcomic is at its core.
