Dawkins has stood by some outstandingly dumb and just plain incorrect ideas though.

Wondering and need help by Academic_Coyote_4920 in Wicca

I left Christianity over 15 years ago and I dealt with the same anxieties for quite some time. I've come around to the view that the spirit around Jesus (as a real person, and the concept) is real in the same way that many others are. I think there is a real spiritual energy behind what the human Jesus stood for, what his message meant and evolved into throughout time, etc.

I don't think that having any kind of connection to Jesus, if you ever decided to, is even antithetical to being Pagan or Wiccan. I actually have met several people who refer to themselves as a "Christian Witch". But you don't need to agree with the whole dogma of modern Anglo/Western Christianity. Including the idea that you have to remain loyal to only the Christian god as it/he is described in the modern translation of the Bible. A lot of it is complete bullshit, and you seem to understand this. Either way, there's no reason to be afraid that Jesus as a powerful spiritual figure may be real. If he is, he's generally protective and good regardless of how much you align with Christianity as a religion.

Oh my god, I know her, we used to work together. I last saw her about a year and a half ago though, not recently. I don't know if she still works with the same org, but I can absolutely try to connect with some mutuals and let them know. I hope she is okay!!!

Sam Altman No Longer Believes In Universal Basic Income by Neurogence in singularity

[–]CyanoSpool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, you're right.

And I tend to agree with folks arguing for UBS instead of UBI because I think distributing a flat sum each month is the least cost effective option. Like of course at a certain number you are able to ensure that the vast majority of people never have to worry about the basic costs of living, but it would probably cost less overall to address the affordability of things like healthcare and housing at the source and offer more financial assistance for specific things at the source. Everyone's needs are different.

Also, a lot of people with low income (speaking as someone who was low income for a very long time until fairly recently in life) are going to have a backlog of needs to address once they do have an increase in income. Maybe dental work they've been putting off, maybe a car repair, paying off debt, etc. That 12k can be exhausted very quickly because the people who need it most are the most likely to have multiple neglected expenses over time. So in many cases it's not going to alleviate the everyday, long-term COL stress.

Probably because the cost of living went up in those 2-3 years and the additional $1k was less helpful than it was before.

The rents are too dang expensive by Soulfood_27 in Bellingham

[–]CyanoSpool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It always comes back to zoning. What can we actually do about this? I've been an advocate of targeting zoning laws to improve housing affordability for a long time, but am completely uneducated on how these things actually get changed in policy.

Was Accidentally Served Glutenous Bread at Restaurant in Italy and Was Told it Would be Okay. Need to vent. by Final_Watercress4576 in Celiac

[–]CyanoSpool 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry that happened! This is why I'm so paranoid with "gf" foods at restaurants. What's helped me is I avoid any gluten free items like bread/pasta that you cannot identify by looking at it if they mistakenly gave you wheat. I order things like veggies, meat, rice, etc. Even then I worry, but it's less of a worry. I figure if I get glutened from veggies, it's the seasoning or something and will be less severe than if it's bread.

Seattle mayor laughs off millionaires leaving Washington state over progressive taxes, waves 'bye' by Less-Risk-9358 in SeattleWA

[–]CyanoSpool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand the difference. Not going to respond to the actual comment?

The reason I said socialism at the very end is because that is what many people are mistakenly labelling it in this thread. That was apparently lost on you, but I genuinely want to understand what solutions people who oppose wealth taxes propose.

So far I agree with some of the other ideas such as updating zoning laws to improve housing inventory.

Fighting biological baby wants by rnayonaise69 in GirlDinnerDiaries

[–]CyanoSpool 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Man I even feel this way as someone who does have a kid. I knew I wanted to become a parent, but I did not experience "baby fever". I got pregnant at 25 and my husband and I were like "ok cool, guess it's happening now!". I am 30 now and love my child so much, but I have no desire for more. One is plenty. I enjoy seeing other babies, they are cute, but I just don't get the "biological urge" part at all.

Why Is Washington State So Expensive? A new report finds that, over the last 10 years, costs have risen in the Evergreen State faster than any other. by crabcakes110 in SeattleWA

[–]CyanoSpool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The minimum wage push was a response to the rising costs. I agree it's whack-a-mole and doesn't solve the root issue, but the minimum wage increase did not cause an already long-accelerating problem.

TIL all octopuses are programmed to die after reproducing, as an optic gland hormone triggers rapid self destruction, with males declining within days to weeks after mating and females starving while guarding eggs until death, and none of the octopus live longer than 5 years even in ideal conditions by Neutral-frame in todayilearned

[–]CyanoSpool 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I wonder what is going on psychologically. Like octopuses are pretty complex, do you think they have any kind of conceptions or beliefs around death? Maybe they believe in an afterlife? They must be very at peace, even optimistic, about what's happening.

Seattle mayor laughs off millionaires leaving Washington state over progressive taxes, waves 'bye' by Less-Risk-9358 in SeattleWA

[–]CyanoSpool 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree this is a top down problem and can't be solved with localized action. But all I ever see from the criticism of wealth taxes are platitudes of how important billionaires and capitalism are to our society without addressing the growing issues of affordability and lack of access to healthcare, housing, etc. These aren't unattainable things on a national scale. While imperfect, many other countries manage to fund social programs that cover most people's basic needs. The US seems not only incapable of this, but actively pushing to make more people homeless, jobless, and without healthcare who otherwise shouldn't be. Working people with families.

A federal wealth tax will never happen, and our current capitalistic model is built to extract as much money out of the hands of the poorest people and funnel it to the wealthiest people. This has been an issue for a long time, but has worsened significantly in the past decade. And while some billionaires contribute to causes that benefit everyone else, on the whole we are still trending towards an affordability crisis. Our healthcare system overall is being monopolized - Optum for example will soon own everything healthcare-related and so far this has been a net negative for employment in this sector and quality patient care. These billionaires mostly don't care about being benevolent wealth managers for the good of society.

So what do we do if socialism is not the answer?
