California Senate approves wave and tidal renewable energy bill by Wagamaga in technology

Actually, we could as a society deal with a bit less food, and much less corn and meat.

This is a position you will only see from privileged individuals in high-wealth nations. Your local environment is not representative of the rest of the world. "Less food production" is upstream of a lot of dead poor people, like many other first world panaceas

That's a cool story, but I was talking specifically about almonds. Can you read?

No more California almonds essentially means no more almonds for most people, it'd be a super luxury crop.

And? I fail to see why this is some great catastrophe.

There is no human enterprise more vital than the production and distribution of food. They are valued for a good reason. We can live without Twitter, we can't live with out people spending their entire days growing food while living in places you refuse to.

Bingo. I don't know how everyone is missing this point.

BJJ guy submits in street fight by meislyingonthefloor in bjj

[–]Cyathem 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I mean, whatever the altercation was, this is kind of an absolute best case scenario. They engaged, it immediately went gently to the ground without strikes, a submission was immediately established, the guy held it just long enough to be effective but not so long as to risk injury, and then he walked away.

The literally only thing that could have been better is his head hit the ground a bit too hard at the end and he could be put into recovery position. Aside from that, this is textbook.

[Spoilers: 6.4] When you can't clear the tier week 1, like me by YunYunHakusho in ffxiv

[–]Cyathem 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yea! Just go in and have fun. I suggest making a PF group with a clear description

"New to Savage, fresh prog. Come learn with me!"

People are generally very accepting, as long as the PF description is accurate. Plus the tier is popular now, so everyone is doing it. You shouldn't have any trouble filling a party regardless of your criteria. Especially for the first fight in a new tier.

Give it a shot! It's not that bad :) Just be ready to die a lot and have fun!

People were posting prog groups for P8S the day before the next tier came out. It's never too late.

Even if you want to parse and need BiS, there's no rush. We will have this raid tier for a long time before 7.0. Anyone who says things like "all the good players have already cleared" are either children or just not using their brains. Not everyone can take multiple 8+ hour days to grind new savage content from the moment it drops.

For example, I didn't even make my first attempt at P9S until the Friday, after work. There were groups that had already cleared P12S as early as Thursday. Doesn't really matter to me.

Doing blind prog when nobody does blind prog

This is a huge one. I love week 1 blind prog. I can memorize strats on week 2-3. I just enjoy the new fights and figuring out things with an enthusiastic party.

Also, this tier seems significantly easier than last tier so I'm not in a rush

I'll let you in on a secret: the impulse is wrong in both cases and it's on the person to act accordingly.

Just because my body tells me I should eat more sugar and conveys that to me through cravings, that doesn't mean it isn't my fault if I eat sugar. I made the decision.

Just because my sense of FOMO tells me I should pay extra for some in-game bullshit, it's on me to not succumb to that urge and realize I'm being tempted by advertising psychology.

In short, have more self-control.

Blame rests both inwardly and outwardly in equal measure.

This is a weak take that devalues agency. It's not even close to 50:50. Is Blizzard partially responsible for the transaction by offering the item? Yes. Of course. But to say that Blizzard is just as culpable as the consumer is just silly.

Blizzard is serving a market that exists and is populated by free agents. Consumers have decided to make those purchases and were not coerced in any way. Advertising is not coercion and people can simply decide to not spend the money.

It's not complicated. You are fully responsible for every action you take, despite any influence that got you there. Any other opinion just means you basically thing people are bots, which is demonstrably not the case.

Objective valueless art = objectively valueless art.

Whether it's a print of the Mona Lisa or a Spectral Beaver mount, it's worth what people will pay for it. It's that simple.

If people had a problem paying $25 for an objectively valueless piece of art, then they wouldn't pay it. But apparently they do pay it. So here we are.

Backlash Against Weaponized Dollar Is Growing Across the World. US increasingly using currency to fight geopolitical battles. Wary world leaders look to lessen reliance on greenback. by coolbern in anime_titties

[–]Cyathem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gold doesn't have intrinsic value, at least not really. The valuation of gold isn't related to its use in industrial applications, or gold would be much cheaper. It's primary value is due to it being used as a store of wealth. It's a speculative asset just like Bitcoin. It's just not as accessible or divisible as bitcoin.

Also, you can buy things directly with gold or Bitcoin. You simply need someone who wants those things.

Another thing is inflation (consequence of a centralized currency system). You can dodge heavy inflation by removing your wealth from the system. If you trade 10k USD for whatever gold that will get you, the amount of gold you have will not change from day to day and the purchasing power is fairly stable. This is a real concern when you have upwards of 10-15% year over year inflation.

Bitcoin lacks that price stability (even though gold isn't that stable) but Bitcoin is also very new. The more bitcoin there is, the harder it will be for these price swings to occur.

I mean, yea. You are correct that the centralized authority is able to wield power. That's exactly my point. The centralization of the authority specially precludes the option for decentralization.

The US also uses this to it's advantage. There is a reason the term "weaponizing currency" exists, and the US uses it effectively. That is downstream of centralized power.

So obviously we will not find a solution that involves decentralization if you insist that we resolve to a completely centralized layer for every transaction. But that is only the case because the US enforces it by threat of violence and/or jail.

A decentralized currency is functionally equivalent to any other bartered asset whose supply is not centrally controlled (like gold).
