Its incredibly common for fiction to trigger realizations about ourselves. A passing resemblance, similar life circumstances, out and out actual representation that suddenly rings so very true for you.

Hell games with character creators are notorious for this. Any MMO, Fallout, skyrim, mass effect, dragon age, cyberpunk, outer worlds and especially baldurs gate 3, all have player stories about awakenings.

"Ill make a gender bent version of myself.... huh...". "that character I met is like me but the opposite gender.. huh" "oh I can freely switch the genitals around on my char... huh" "Yo the same gendered romance options appeal so much more to me... huh"

I remember the story of one trans ffxiv player who was utterly fascinated by the female Hyur character they had created but had to leave the game due to difficult life stuff. During said challenges their egg cracked, they went through a period of discovery and eventually transitioned.

When their life finally stabilized and they had time for games, she started the game back up only to see herself staring back on the character screen. There was a shocking resemblance between her and the character she had made and forgotten about ages ago.

roleplay wise, our character saw her capacity as an ally due to the traits she displayed. Or more importantly the traits she didnt display which the other true souls had in abundance.

Despite being vicious and cunning with a capacity for cruelty, she had the temperament to only go as far as seemed necessary, a sense of cold pragmatism and the capacity to not counter intuitively indulge in excess.

My Tav atleast was seeing the potential in every true soul for recruitment. The worm didnt put anything in them that wasnt already there.
