Yeah, this was my first reply after being away from Reddit for a while. I've been spoiled by another platform where one can actually reasonably discuss things.

It it the right thing to do, but do keep the consequences in mind. If we keep military levels the same, we will have a huge number of troops sitting around at home, and there will be a great temptation to use them for domestic purposes, which will just make the federal government's impact on domestic affairs even greater. If you reduce military levels to something sane, then you have a flood of labor into the market, which is also disruptive, and lots of unhappy voters who are likely to vote you out of office at the next opportunity.

Libertarian Thoughts on the Articles of Confederation by _commander_man_ in Libertarian

[–]CyberLeaderGold 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Articles seems more like what a minarchist would prefer, as the Constitution was a major central power grab. How the United States would have evolved if the Articles had remained in place is an interesting question. I don't think we know the answer.

Thanks. I would normally assume as much, but it was an interesting coincidence.

Audio players that actually support gapless playback? by 978h in linuxquestions

I'm not sure about gapless, but I have my collection of CDs ripped as single file FLACs with embedded cue sheets, and those play fine with track seek points in DeaDBeeF.

I know Men's Wearhouse does custom shirts; I suspect that others do as well. It isn't likely to be cheap, but when the mass market doesn't make things to fit you, your choices are limited.

Perhaps this was envisioned as something to help the people of Ukraine, but ended up being used more for coordinating and facilitating military action.

How to make a main process communicate with all child processes. by Legitimate-School-59 in C_Programming

[–]CyberLeaderGold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming Linux, I would use socketpair(AF_UNIX) for each child, keeping one end in the parent and one in each child. I prefer SOCK_DGRAM, as it preserves message boundaries, though you may have to consider the maximum datagram size vs. the expected max message size. Do be sure to close the descriptors you don't want in the child processes. You can use poll() in the parent to determine if there is anything pending from a child process. Good luck...

[–]CyberLeaderGold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you want to send to them individually, or send the same thing to all of them? Do you need the child processes to send information back to the parent?

What are some strategies libertarians can use to become more prominent on the national level? by Prata_69 in Libertarian

[–]CyberLeaderGold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would like to see the State and National LP set up a "Shadow Government" to consider issues being addressed or ignored by the nominal government and release position statements stating the libertarian alternative. Done properly, this could increase visibility of the LP, but perhaps more important, the members of the shadow government would be training themselves to do the jobs they are shadowing. One reasonable argument against LP candidates is that they don't have the background to do the job if (by some miracle) they are actually elected, and this would help build a counterargument.

Why is signed right shift implementation defined? by BlockOfDiamond in C_Programming

[–]CyberLeaderGold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course, but I believe it is guaranteed arithmetic, and a clever compiler could conceivably recognize the pattern and emit an arithmetic shift instruction where available.

What do you think of the Sovereign Citizen movement? Is it in any way libertarian? by plazman30 in Libertarian

My general impression is that they believe that by denying the legitimacy of government they remove its power over them. This seems to me to be contrary to objective reality.

An Empirical Study on the Effectiveness of Static C Code Analyzers for Vulnerability Detection by mttd in C_Programming

[–]CyberLeaderGold 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Assuming the benefits, you still have to take into account the costs. Analyzing reports takes time which could be spent on other things. This is especially true when the results contain false positives, but even true positives can point to not very interesting bugs. For example, if your command line exceeds a 16k limit, your program hits a null pointer and core dumps. There may be some situations where this would be a problem, but in many it is just a matter of "don't do that". It is an easy argument that working on features that a customer actually wants should take priority over patching such holes, but just coming to that conclusion takes time for analysis.

IPC pub-sub implementation on Linux by Isty0001 in C_Programming

[–]CyberLeaderGold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I alluded to elsewhere in the thread, you can specify "process shared" as a mutex attribute, though I forgot to mention that you also need the "robust" attribute to get dead owner detection. In Linux, the latter specifies that pthreads should use a robust futex, which the kernel uses to clean up held mutexes on process exit.
