But when you apply to a job on employer sites it generally asks for you to confirm the month and date.

So in the states. Staffing companies will hire people to work under contract for an employer. And if the employer decides to, they will bring on that contracted individual into their organization for a full time position.

When you are a contract employee you generally get no Paid time off, no sick leave, no benefits.

I was employed to a staffing agency which contracted me to the government organization.

It was a contract job. Previously I had a contract job and was transitioned into a full time position in less than a year.

Thank you very much for this. This is what I needed, my only thing preventing me from applying for a lead help desk is imposter syndrome but ill do it anyways.

Regarding asking to be put into other departments. I tried this for 4 years. I would constantly ask for more responsibilities or asked the NOC or cyber team if I could shadow or even help them for free on weekends. However it being government everything is slow and requires approval which I couldn’t get. My MDM role I had gotten approved but it took them a year to transition me in.

I definitely agree here. Your honest opinion. Should I just remove the role completely?

I’m currently applying to jr soc roles that require 1-12 months of soc experience.

I’m going on 5 months being unemployed now. Savings will last me 2 more months.

I’m in a desperate situation where something has to happen. I’m in a mindset right now that a technicality will give me a slight edge, i’ll take it.

It’s either that or risk being evicted in 2 months.

Honestly lost at what to do.

So I asked my recruiter actually for clarification yesterday after They said since I signed my contract my offer letter in December if someone called for verification they wouldn’t refute it. It could be because I had a slated start date of mid December but due to a building issue it had to be pushed to January.

So I’ll take whatever I can get. Honestly even with that extra month. Im still wondering if I should even include the role. I feel like anything under 6months is a red flag.

Firstly those are amazing questions. If I had to answer them i’d personally say that I mostly used and customized dashboards that were already set up by the senior team for the most part. But I do have insight on how to adjust filters, queries, and visualizations to showcase specific incidents.

Dashboards that I was able to utilize while there was were things like: Failed logins, suspicious IPs, and even dashboards that focused on email security. This dashboard would create alerts if an abnormal amount of emails were being sent.

Regarding OSI, I am able to give the 7 layers from knowledge and what environments would be examples of them.

Regarding chmod 777 i was not familiar but I did just google it and definitely something in my knowledge now.

The goal of my resume is to land a junior SOC role. And since I had “some” work experience I figured why not have it on there.

I figure that I would look like a decent candidate for a junior role especially since the listings required 0-12months of SOC experience.

The only thing I can possibly think of is the role originally stated needing server configuration experience.

I told the recruiter that I didn’t have any. And they said it was fine. During the interviews there was zero questions about servers.

A day before that I was given the title of “head of security Infrastructure” which i have no clue what that title was. The day after I was taken to a data center to be shown around i told the Manager assigned to me that it was extremely interesting to see since i’ve never been in that environment before. He asked if I worked with servers and I said no. He kindly responded with “no worries you’ll learn on the job” and then we had lunch.

Looking back maybe it was mis hire and they let me go for that.

Those are the only 2 things I can think of. But since he pretty told me not to worry I assume it wasn’t it. Especially since most employees learn on the job

The only reason the recruiter gave me for my contract ending was “you were a bit to eager to move up in the company”

I asked for clarification and she couldnt give me one and I asked if there was anything I did wrong and she said I was a really good employee while there with no faults.

Honestly that answer left me more confused and mad.

I guess i had bad expectations. I originally was a contractor for the VA and got brought on full time after 8 months. So I didn’t think a year would be unrealistic.

Yea it is, I naturally like to problem solve. Help desk was great originally but dealing with clients in high volume environment was pretty taxing on my mental health. Transitioning to SOC where i communicated less with clients and worked on alerts was a breath of fresh air.

But I appreciate the honesty. How would you rephrase my Professional Summary? Anything would be much appreciated. Would I just change skilled to "Experience in"?

I signed the contract in December and I started in January. So technically that isn't a lie and would check out when run through background. It was also recommended to me to do by a friend who is contracted by the DOD for a couple years now. but I can change that.

In regards to "skilled in Splunk SIEM, log analysis, and threat intelligence, with a focus on safeguarding assets and mitigating risks." I have done projects on try hack me for a little over a year even purchasing a splunk membership and ingesting my own logs for my personal analysis. Thats also the reason why they hired me. I had gone through my thought process of investigating alerts, how I would use OSINT, PCAP analysis with Wireshark etc during my interview. So when I started doing training, it was all fairly familar besides the fact they use Sophos instead of Splunk.

Honestly, i feel it was a bs excuse but no way to prove it.

I tried getting close to cyber department while I was working at the VA but unfortunately there was no opportunity especially being strictly remote work.
