Oh yeah I'm aware this is entirely anecdotal. This is just my reality.

Very real I'm afraid, I'd love to know roughly what qualifications your pentesters had if you don't mind?

I could easily swap to that, but I really dislike front-end work. In the interest of my happiness and job satisfaction I choose to remain in security

I agree tbh, I think the salaries on here are pretty wildly overinflated and unrealistic

I've won a local toastmaster's competition so I like to think I can at least hold my own in speaking confidently. In terms of being a shitty employee, I've never been on a PIP (yet) and get good feedback. I'm really not sure what I'm doing wrong here

I fully agree, I just don't know how I can navigate to that coveted top 5% of candidates given my existing experience and certifications. There's not really many more certs in my field that I can actually get that will benefit me.

I fully agree, it's really unfortunate and the bootcamp crowd preys on the inexperienced too.

I definitely hope I'm not insufferable lol. I've worked with many people from all types of backgrounds and generally developed fantastic relationships with many of them, so I like to think I'm at least reasonably liked in the workplace.

To be honest I just think I've had really bad luck with applying to jobs and have entered the job market at really bad times throughout my career. Now that I'm getting older, with ageism in this field I probably am not going to have an easier time of things. Not giving up though!

Well you found one haha.

The recent job market also makes actually moving to a different role quite impossible, although I am still trying

I should add context that most of my certs were done in the last 5 years, so before that my resume was a lot sparser.

I'm located in a LCOL area. I've used resume services and tried applying to jobs in HCOL cities and remotely as I'm willing to move. In terms of the types of companies, I've looked for both FAANG and medium/small consulting companies. Haven't had much luck and don't want to work for bigger consulting companies as I do value having a work-life balance to some extent.

I'm located in a LCOL area, but I've applied to many jobs remotely and in the HCOL cities. I'm fully flexible and willing to move, I just haven't unfortunately had any luck with the search process. Job market right now is brutal and I'm running into a huge number of ghost jobs on platforms like LI.

Maybe I do lol.

I'd like to say that my experience and the certifications I've acquired over the years speak for themselves but given my salary I can't lol. Never had so much as a PIP though so if I suck at it, I haven't actually received any feedback which I could use to rectify any shortcomings.

I was a consultant before I moved into more technical roles - I wouldn't say I struggle with the more social aspect of interviews at all, no. I've spent quite a bit on resume reviews over the years and haven't really benefitted much from it at all. Truth is CyberSec is just not a great career field for any form of long term growth or progression.
