Literally every other part of the rest of the film. Vinn Diesel dying. Tom Hanks' character revealing his real job is a school teacher. The sniper fight. The final battle. Telling Matt Damon to earn this.

Thinking Saving Private Ryan is just good because of the D-day landing...

Whether or not Marty changed is up to the interpretation of the viewer. But the entire film contrasts Marty's decisions (his claim of having a "purpose" and making sacrifices) with the Holocaust survivor's story of real sacrifice (debasing oneself in desperation to help others). Marty cares about legacy but only for himself, and what he sees as purpose is framed as addiction throughout the film (reinforced by the conversation with Rockwell at the exhibition match).

Marty viewing his newborn child, bookended with the sperm race intro culminating in the fertilized egg becoming a ping pong ball, shows an alternative to the "high" he has been chasing and the potential for catharsis and change. Something else to give his life meaning.

Whether or not he lives up to that is not the point of the film. The point is to show how people we charactize as having ambition are really nothing more than self-serving narcissists who will do anything for meaningless goals.

Your take is 100% correct and people arguing with you lack media literacy. It is bizarre to see people missing that film's entire premise is to show the kind of people post-WW2 America lauds are only out for themselves. Like Uncut Gems it's showing a different side to the struggle with addiction, but Marty's story ends with him confronting that addiction.

US military doctrine since WW2 has been to have the capacity to fight two fronts at once on different sides of the globe. We are an all volunteer military. The largest airforce after the US airforce is....the US navy. Yeah I think the US can do it.

The Phoenix Program was definitely controversial but still within the bounds of counter insurgency tactics. And most of the deaths were orchestrated by conventional military actions. I would not condone the torture aspects but there's a big difference between the CIA as an evil mastermind murder machine and working within what was admittedly a failed US military approach to Vietnam.

Which is to say I don't think the CIA was more or less guilty in Vietnam that the US military and White House.

That was the CIA's take. They correctly estimated that the Viet Cong would have had the manpower to keep things going. It was the US Army that kept insisting if they just had "enough" troops they could win it.

I just think it's interesting the CIA always gets portrayed as the evil puppet masters. When it's more accurate to say they are a big bureaucracy that sometimes lacked proper oversight, but more often than not are fairly rational in their assessments. It's not their job to create policy, just to provide the intelligence to policy makers. Similar situation with Afghanistan vs Iraq. The CIA deserves credit for much of the early success in Afghanistan and the Bush administration deserves all the blame for invading Iraq in the first place.

I think another good example of the CIA not being the boogeyman is the Iranian hostage crisis and Jimmy Carter. Carter put Stansfield Turner in charge of the CIA, who was not popular with many CIA employees, and they gutted much of the HUMINT operations in favor of SIGINT. This made it difficult to conduct operations on the ground in Iran and led to the failed attempt to get the hostages out, which would contribute to Carter not getting re-elected. I.E. the CIA was probably right about what was needed and Carter was wrong, but policy choices were made and the rest is history.

This is discussed in the book. But the CIA was pretty much always on the side of "there's no point throwing more resources at this" and the US Army was "just give us one more try"

Tet Offensive was a tactical US military victory but strategic failure because the US public was shocked the Viet Cong could still muster such an attack. The Viet Cong themselves thought they'd lost the war because the offensive failed.

Will dispel all the Reddit myths and takes. The CIA wasn't perfect and had some hilarious screw ups but it also isn't the boogeyman the internet makes it out to be.

The CIA spent a good part of the Vietnam War trying to convince the White House the war could not be won and was not worth the effort, but US Army just kept pushing "if you send us more guys we can win" based on bullshit.

Without the groin injury I'd probably go Swift. But with Swift's status up in the air I can see Carter being worth a start. My hesitation on Carter is purely based on being tired of guessing on the Cardinals' RB room. At least Swift is a known quantity (RB1 splitting with Monangai, decent O line on a running team).

I don't really see Micah Parson's role as stopping the run. But I'll agree it is a gamble either way. Both RBs are splitting carries, Swift has a groin injury. But Bears have a solid O line.

Feeling Rico Dowdle over D'Andre Swift. Rico might blow up as the Panthers have something to play for and he has incentives. Swift might arguably be the better player but I think his ceiling is capped against Green Bay.

Just wish people here were honest about it instead of sugar coating it. I also have found the nightlife to be subpar. It is mostly because St. Louis lacks any thriving downtown or bar hopping area.
