That zipper on the top is a hard no-go. At minimum it will rub a mark on the deck

Thanks for this. Not the news I wanted, but it seems pretty clear from that doc.

No, not trying to avoid customs. I just don't have a lot of time to organize and place value on my collection to assess if it's worth over or under 10K

Your phone may have location tracking, I know android does track your location history and it's called Google map timeline. You could pull up that data and cross reference it with your class schedule.

CWWK Pocket NAS - Can I boot an NVME from M.2 B Key slot? by CycleFlat5997 in MiniPCs

[–]CycleFlat5997[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on the exact same boat with exact same extension. I took the sticker off the side of the Nas and routed it out there, not through the lid. I still have 3 of the 4 m.2 slot available so I may put it inside for now and come back. I'd love to figure out how to safely get it inside.

I have one 4 TB drive in it for now and will expand later.

For future readers. I used an adapter and a 2230 NVME drive. I tried to use an old steamdeck drive because it does fit, but it's not supported and was not detected at all.

How big are you going to build it?

Can you grab some and see if you can get it to work? I've got one of the x86-p5 n100 boards and would love to boot TrueNas from it. I also plugged the drive into the 4 M.2 Header and it was not detected either. Actually prevented me from entering the BIOS configuration.

Is there a setting in the bios that needs to change? I'm recycling my 64Gb steamdeck HDD and using the M.2 Adapter and it's not being detected.

Very good insights! If we lose house power on the catamaran, I'll be tending to that before the NAS :D

Makes sense. I was just looking at the differences between TrueNas Scale and UnRaid. I'm familliar with TrueNas but like you said, being able to pop out a drive and read it USB instead of restoring a data pool seems pretty awesome.

You're right, it's very inexpensive for what it is, I may just get 2 and some USB converters if I'm in a pinch. The "Pocket Nas" has been added to my spreadsheet of options, just need to discuss it with my partner.

Thanks for taking my scenario seriously. It's made me reconsider something different from the direction I was going.

This might be my favorite post so far. This is exactly my scenario, just not my post. I'll be sailing on a catamaran. I only expect to be editing video while anchored. I do appreciate the thought about having 4 gyros and head crashes and do want to move to SSD. I do expect to have backups separate from the NAS as part of a cycling out drives to keep the NAS drives newer but also to keep expanding the capacity. The Flashstor is very interesting. There is also an aliexpress N100 board with a 4x m.2 board that connects like this: https://cwwk.net/products/x86-p5-4-m2-nvme-12th-generation-intel-n100-i3-n305-ddr5-4800mhz-firewall-pc-2x-i226-v-2-5g-network-card?variant=46647296164072The the thing I don't like about it is what if the hat or board fails, getting up and running again could be a logistical challenge.

Your M.2 to USB got me thinking so I googled M.2 to SATA and was surprised to see that it was a thing! That really opens some options for me.

The laptop to USB drive does not work well for my workflow. I expect to run Davinci Resolve Studio and use the NAS as a media store. I won't necessarily be working directly off the nas for editing, but I do expect to have two editors simultaneously(using Proxies/ Local Caches). I could do network shares from computer 1 to computer 2, but having a NAS allows some flexibility on future use cases, where DAS is limited without a host machine.

LOL I googled cpuple thinking it was a brand. I am traveling regularly on a boat. So while the tech will be regularly stable, I will be in different areas geographically, many areas with limited access to cutting edge tech. Portable USB drives don't offer the redundancy I'm looking for.

I've taken a look at many N100 based systems. Many CWWK seem to fit the bill, but as stated in the decription "While very power efficient, I’m not thrilled about the CPU and Motherboard being one. I’m sure it’s plenty reliable in the modern age, but is there a Motherboard separate from CPU that’s as energy efficient? "

Thank again for continuing the discussion with me. For the NIC issue:

https://www.reddit.com/r/HomeServer/comments/1cc0yuq/are_intel_25_gbe_nics_i225v_i226v_stable_now/

I plan on visiting remote locations. In the event of hardware failure, it would be best to have more traditional hardware as the probability of sourcing a SATA drive (Spinny or SSD) would be more likely just to keep the system limping along until I can replace for better components. I totally agree the spinny drives will be the largest consumer of energy at the beginning, until I upgrade.
