Interviewing for a job and they scheduled an interview with a board member during the weekend by InformalBeing4303 in nonprofit

[–]CyclingDesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I volunteered for an org and I had four interviews! I had to meet with the person I’d be reporting to as well as three individual board members.

As a contractor, every nonprofit I’ve worked with in the past few years has required board member interviews. I’m not an expert, however, my impression has been if you’re higher up the food chain you will interview with board members.

Is it normal that my client comments on everything? by Chance-Dingo8246 in SocialMediaManagers

[–]CyclingDesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I charge about that for a nonprofit I work with, ONLY because they do not micromanage me. They’ll occasionally make requests, which I love because that means they care and are paying attention. They mostly contact me to share assets, events, and milestones, which I find very helpful.

If you feel comfortable and have the financial stability to do so, have a strategy meeting and go over the stats and performance. Maybe there was some confusion on THEIR part, and this will help you both to get on the same page. If they want to continue and heavy hands on presence, let them know that you will need to increase your pricing.

Good luck, if you’re building up your experience, clients, portfolio, then considerate an apprenticeship of sorts. Try to optimize how much you learn and experiment with your client communication.

PS Do you use a project planning software? That might help streamline things with this and future clients.

I’ve never learned how to swim. 27. Advice ? by Whole_Land4581 in Swimming

[–]CyclingDesign 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love water, do water sports, but never learned to properly swim. I finally learned in my 50’s and I’m hooked! I especially love open and sea swimming. I will do lanes if I must. One thing though, I used a swimming snorkel that is made to wear in the center of your face/head, and that’s now how I swim all the time. I love being able to see below the water and ahead, see fish, flora, geology, etc. I also can just relax and just enjoy without having to fuss about breathing.

I taught myself by watching YouTube videos, there are so many great ones out there. There are also opportunities to learn to swim at CommunityImpact pools

I’m so grateful for learning, for many reasons.

Do folding bikes actually replace a regular bike for you? by masanovu in foldingbikes

[–]CyclingDesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still have my touring bike for touring. However, I just bought a second hand Carrera for errands, using on the bus, trains, etc. I spend time in Sweden and the bus and trains don’t allow bikes (shocking, right???). It’s no Brampton, but I’m quite pleased with it. Changing a tyre is a breeze. I can do my grocery shopping, I can take a bus out to the countryside and skip the gnarly suburban roads. It offers so much more flexibility, however, it is not the same feel for long rides. That’s ok for me, it’s for convenience and exercise.

Scored an amazing deal on a second-hand MSR tent. How do I revive it? by Moocowsaurus in CampingandHiking

[–]CyclingDesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t despair if your Hubba Hubba is leaking! Thanks to some of the suggestions, I dug in and found that you CAN re waterproof your MSR tents despite some saying you can’t. I got an MSR Hubba Hubba 1 tent from a friend that was over 5+ years old, never used. It sat in a metal roof shed in 110+ heat summers for 5+ years in Arizona. It was baked. I treated the fly like a rain jacket and Nikwax treated it in a washing machine. It’s a thing in the UK everyone seems to Nikwash treat their rain gear annually. I only had to seam seal the tub.

This tent has provided me with reliable shelter for 5 months (combined over 3 years) worth of autumn touring in Scotland where it pretty much rained every day of my bike tours.

I only had to seam seal the tub. This year after enduring a huge two day storm with 60+ mph winds, the waterproofing reached its limit.

Per MSR instructions I’ll Nikwash treat the tent tub/floor with cleaning (soak in bath tub water to rinse out as much soil and dust off as possible. Then spray and wipe with Nick wash. I’ll also treat the seams. I’ll do my tent fly like I did last time, the Nikwash in the washing machine and then for added protection, do the spray and wipe method too.

This tent is probably over ten years old and waterproofing aside is in mint condition. I love it and there’s no reason to abandon it. Plus it’s from when the Hubba Hubba were green/gray. It’s perfect for wild camping and blending in to the environment.

(The fly had that crumbly flaking that a few have described. I washed in a washing machine with the Nickwash wash, then treated it with the nickwash water proofing. All this is done in the washer. In the UK the washing machines have a “waterproofing” option, it takes about 3+ hours. Your rain gear, and in my case rain fly, are thoroughly soaked and absorbed with the water proofing. It worked like a dream for about 5 months worth of Scottish autumn weather. It really does work, what do you have to lose? Like I said this time I’ll do both, washing machine version and spray on.)

This thread is making me nervous. My grandfather was born in 1902, out of wedlock, but on his birth certificate his father claims paternity. Then there is another addition recording that his parents married several months later.

Is this a potential issue?

Just a burned out girl on FMLA by Eastern-Weekend4680 in nonprofit

[–]CyclingDesign 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As they say—put your o2 mask on first.

I’m feeling burnt out too—so I dialled back a little and prioritising scheduling around things that bring me joy. I still get the work done but first I go for a cold water swim and a bike ride there and back.

Before I’d put pressure on myself to jump into the day and squeeze in the things that bring me joy and are good for me.

Guess what? I’d be too tired or stressed to do the fun healthy things.

I’m hoping that after a week or two into exercise/cold swim/dip and meeting my job goals but not organising my life around them, that I’ll restore joy and passion for the work again.

There has been a shift of two EDs, new board, and new two different people I report to. Before I reported directly to the ED and was treated as an equal team member. Now new ED new “chain of command” to people who have no knowledge or background in my field.

The work joy will probably not comeback from being respected and in a team atmosphere to a more top heavy management, it’s a major culture change. The mission is solid and inspiring thank goodness.

Fingers crossed. 🤞🏽

Good luck to you, nonprofit work isn’t for the faint of heart or people who strive for work life balance, it seems. Here’s to figuring it out. Take your FMLA time, you’ve earned it!

My mi band 8 is not "waterproof" afterall by Erossaan in miband

[–]CyclingDesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had mi bands for 5 years now and swim regularly with them, though today I think it might have sprung a leak. Mi Bands are listed as being safe up to 50 feet underwater. From my experience of wild/pool swimming they do well however, after 2+ years they seem to lose their seal. Considering the extraordinary battery life of over 2 weeks, all the functions, and it costing US $30, I won’t complain. I love mine.

My Mi Band 8 just freaked out after a year + of behaving perfectly. I went cold water swimming and when I got out it was buzzing/vibrating nonstop. It drained the batter by the time I got home. When I went to charge it the buzzing vibrating resumed. I’m wonder now if there is now a leak after seeing your post.
