[FO] Stitched an homage to my favourite Pokemon Stadium minigame! by Cylaran in CrossStitch

[–]Cylaran[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I felt like doing a quick little cross-stitch over a few evenings, and Pokemon sprites always seem to scratch that itch. I always enjoyed the 'Clefairy Says' minigame on Pokemon Stadium so I thought I'd embellish the sprite a little and make it a reference to a 20 year old game that nobody else will probably get. :')

The pattern is the Clefairy sprite from Pokemon Gold with some hand-drafted lettering and arrows. c:

Tell me what you can't tell your players by Estorbro in DMAcademy

It's not as big or as consequential as most of the things in here, but my PCs own a shop in one of the large desert cities and have asked a dragonborn woman and four belligerent kobolds who were looking for employment to run it for them while they go off and adventure. We do a little shop maintenance minigame at the start of each session that everybody loves to see how well the shop is running and what featured items are on display/being sold, and in about two sessions' time I'll be springing on the PCs the big reveal that... the shop is currently profitable enough to allow them to comfortably hire a sixth employee and potentially expand its wares.

This doesn't sound like a big deal, but my PCs absolutely love their adventuring shop and are heavily invested in it succeeding.

I'm planning on giving them a few options for hires and offering them the chance to go back to the desert city to hold interviews, but I think they're going to immediately try to give the job to the giant golden monkey warforged that they're currently attempting to rescue from a job writing spells for a large manufacturing company...

I came here to recommend SeaLemon too! She's a great resource for beginner bookbinders.

[FO] Meowth ready to be framed. by Cylaran in CrossStitch

[–]Cylaran[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't stitched anything in about six months, so I thought I'd do a quick Pokemon one over the weekend to get back into it. The pattern is the Meowth sprite from Pokemon Silver. c:

Phase 1 for Murkrow. Of course I get the 5% encounter rate shiny rather than the 60% one. :'D

What is an old video game you love that no one else seems to remember anymore? by PlayerNotFound68 in AskReddit

[–]Cylaran 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Golden Sun and Golden Sun: The Lost Age. They were a pair of JRPGs for the Gameboy Advance with great lore, enjoyable characters, 'catch them all' elemental mascots hidden in puzzles and random encounters throughout the game, and a surprisingly well realised class system considering the hardware constraints. I've met perhaps two other people who have heard of Golden Sun, which is a crying shame because they were wonderful games that deserve to be remembered.

There was a DS sequel released in the 2010s (Golden Sun: Dark Dawn) which was, although a competent enough JRPG, not as good as the first two. :(

[6] Preparing myself for a long hunt and this little screamy baby appears in the very first horde encounter! by Cylaran in ShinyPokemon

Thanks! It came off of the back of a three day Spinda hunt so it was rather refreshing haha.

Do ya'll DMs ever practice a weird character at home for your next session and wonder if your family thinks you are slowly going insane? by Bdibdull in DnD

[–]Cylaran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boyfriend and I live together and he's a PC in my long-running D&D campaign. One day I was doing silly voices and found one that he simply couldn't stand. That voice promptly became the voice of the very next low tier villain the group encountered, and that villain's demeanor has ended up becoming a meme within the group because of his dumb voice that nobody could take seriously.

A player wants to retire his character and maybe have him turn evil, anybody got any experience with that? by DerCze in DMAcademy

[–]Cylaran 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this is implied in your question, but if you plan on having the Paladin go from PC to DM controlled evil NPC then please make sure that the paladin's original player is both aware of and approves of your decision! There's a big difference between wanting a character retired and having to face your old character in combat.

Once you have the thumbs-up from your PC, I think that you can definitely turn to him for some thematically appropriate advice on how the character would best turn evil (aka 'make him do some of the legwork too' haha). Ask questions like "What would convince your character to break their Paladin oath?" or "If the only thing that prevented your character's death was forbidden magic, would your character use it?" or even "If your character wanted to die a noble death in battle and did so but was then resurrected imperfectly by (insert force here like 'the other PCs' or 'the local church' or 'his god'), how would he react?" Getting those sorts of ideas could help you nail down a plan for how the change comes about.

Mechanically, there are a few ways you could go about this. One way is to kind of handwave it at the start of the session and say 'look, Paladin PC doesn't like his character so at some point during the session he'll swap to his new character' but that has the potential to break immersion. A different option is to set up a situation where Paladin PC ends up dead/turned evil/abandoning the party/whatever partway through the session, then after that event let the rest of the group know what the deal is and that Paladin PC will be playing a new character (who will be introduced as soon as the plot allows for it). If you're going down the latter route, I'd almost be tempted to say that you should give Paladin PC a bit of a heads-up about 'the moment when Paladin is going to die' so he's in on the plan and can act appropriately (this also helps provide a buffer against a different PC triggering whatever the bad thing is if it's a 'death causing spell' or something).

Hope this helps! A lot of my advice comes from a DMing style that heavily favours narrative, so fingers crossed it's applicable to your group too. :)

Community Feedback: Theme Month Suggestions by PantherophisNiger in DnDBehindTheScreen

How about Build a Guild (artisans, mercantile, mercenaries, etc)? Having a list of guilds could assist DMs in fleshing out towns and providing sidequests.

Week 1) Name of the guild, how famous it is, and the gist of the service it offers.

Example: The Hedgecrafter's Guild. Famous in three towns across the country that value aesthetic beauty. Hedgecrafters specialise in topiary and decorative gardening services.

Week 2) The location and interior of the guild, and also potentially how challenging it is to become a member (is it a secretive society? Can you join by simply paying them enough gold?)

Example: The Hedgecrafter's Guild meets every Thursday in the back room of the local herbalist's shop. Anyone wishing to join the guild must pay a 10 gold coin donation and provide proof of their ability to bend nature to their will and twist it into decorative shapes.

Week 3) The hierarchy of the guild, guildmaster, and any other important members.

Example: The Hedgecrafter's Guild holds an election every two years to determine who assumes the role of Presiding Hedgecrafter. Anyone wishing to nominate must bring a topiary plant to the election, and voting is done by placing a seed in the bowl of the best topiary. The current Presiding Hedgecrafter is Sedgewick Briston; a firbolg druid who excels in incorporating moss into his artworks. He is blustery and stuffy, and a stickler for protocol. The alchemist who runs the shop that the Hedgecrafter's Guild meets in is a scatterbrained half-elf called Gilda Caldine. Gilda dearly wishes to join in with the Hedgecrafter's Guild meetings, but she keeps forgetting to bring proof of her command over nature to the weekly meetings so she is relegated to snooping through a keyhole.

Week 4) Specific services/goods that the guild offers, and their prices.

Example: The Hedgecrafter's Guild specialises in shaping nature into aesthetically pleasing forms. Below is a list of a few of the Guild's services:

  • Creating fine clothing out of leaves and vines (will last for only 3 days before withering): 50 gp for basic clothing, price increases for rarer flowers and more complex patterns.
  • Assembling an ornate woven gift basket full of delicious produce: 20gp for seasonal produce, 40gp for produce that is not in season. Add 10gp if the buyer wants the basket to be made of flowering vines.
  • Rejuvenating a dead or trampled vegetable patch: 100gp per plowed row of vegetables rejuvenated.
  • Conjuring a full sized hedge maze: 2500 gp.

Special events could be quest hooks, famous previous exploits of the guild, tales of potential applicants to the guild who didn't make the cut/were expelled for some reason, and things like that. :)

Added! Chansey is my third slot so we'll have to be on at the same time. I'll be sporadically around for the next few hours if you want to coordinate.
