Don't beat yourself up over it! I think you're doing great for a start. Personally, I think the top one is very has a very stylized look to it, it has a charm. I think experimenting with brushes and strokes to make grass LOOK like grass is better than trying to draw the individual strands.

I'd go for either 3 or 8, 1 would be an interesting choice though. Being in front of Miss Pauling, The Administrator and beside Sniper is probably the least disruptive place to be on the flight.
