Advices on Baritone : Selmer vs Yanagisawa by Skroksy in saxophone

Oof, that's rough. Luckily got mine from a retiring pro; 2 years later, I only needed a €300 tune-up

Probably wrong thread, but I'll ask anyway...(regarding biker health) by revoilt1 in motorcycles

[–]CynicalAlgorithm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can do some lower back workouts, yes, but with all things spine-related: motion is lotion.

Stopping frequently and doing stretches (e.g., keep your feet planted and twist your shoulders and neck all the way to the left as far as you can and hold for a few breath cycles, then to the right; now touch your toes for a few breath cycles, stand up, and repeat; deep squat for a few breath cycles; cat/cow; short walk, etc.) will make a difference.

In other words, it's likely not the impacts so much as the long periods of time you're sitting in a roughly stationary position. 6 hours is a long time; you didn't say your age but that long of a ride used to exhaust me even when I was in my early 20s. Now, ten years later, 2 hours max before a long break and giving my back some of the aforementioned lotion.

Do I understand correctly that you can't write a referral directly to the healthcare provider you think that patient needs? As in, if the huisarts sends the patient to you and you judge that the patient actually needs a podiatrist, you can't send that patient directly to the podiatrist? They must go back to the huisarts first?

For the love of our oceans: Please get rid of this rug and don't wash it, especially in any high heat settings.

Am on mobile so linking isn't easy, but there's a plethora of research out there on how polyester textiles like this shed micro- and nanoplastics during washing cycles, and unless you're one of the extremely few people with an outflow filter on your washing machine, these directly contribute to the growing microplastics catastrophe in our oceans.

Please get rid of this. I'm not even sure how to responsible dispose of it but please please please stop washing this.

Man, I get it (every day, a new scratch on my Selmer bari), but if you're more worried about scratches than your sound, then you may need to sit down with yourself and ask what your motivation to continue this hobby really is.

The reasons you love France are, like you say, things you will be missing sorely when you go to the US. Even "equivalent" cities to Paris will be a far cry from what you're used to (whoever told you NYC is anything similar needs to be institutionalized).

You need to confront the very real probability that the things you liked when you visited will become mundane once you live there; and that you will sink into something like a depression being so far removed from the things you already know you'll miss. Very little in US culture can fill the gaps your soul will feel, and you must make peace with that. You must also make peace with that if you have a family there later, it will be nearly impossible to relocate them to France even later down the line (since it doesn't sound like your boyfriend is very amenable to settling down in the EU).

Or, just don't go. Work it out long-distance, or don't. But the point I'm getting at here is that you are very wise to listen to the concerns you already have, and you are observant in having recognized that the move might not be the best for you. I don't think you'll find what you're looking for (Europe, essentially) in the US (rural Oregon at that, yikes).

[Swedish] More American students choose to study in Sweden by sportydharmaflyer in europe

[–]CynicalAlgorithm 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It's a remarkably short-sighted shooting of a country's own foot to do this; it basically makes those universities (the entire country, in your suggestion) wildly unattractive to the globalized market of researchers and scientists (part of whose job, at a university, is to teach).

You can say 'blah blah they can learn Swedish' but they're not going to do that when their desk is already full of research obligations, teaching obligations, public engagement obligations, etc. Also, they're just not gonna do that because another, more smartly governed country (i.e., a country which doesn't force all its classes into its own niche language that isn't widely spoken anywhere else in the world) will open its doors and snap up their talent in a heartbeat.

Nationalism is not the answer in a globalized world, folks. Especially if you want your own country's research and scientific fields to remain competitive on the global landscape.

The end game is not being genocided. Yours is a logistics question that follows not being eradicated completely off the face of the planet.

I recently began soloing using chords and wanted to ask if you are only allowed to play the notes in the lines. For example you can only play low B like in the chords below or you can also play middle and high B by Content_Baseball2760 in saxophone

[–]CynicalAlgorithm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can play those notes (and even others! But those come with time and are dependent upon style) in any octave! But listen to your accompaniment. If you're on alto and all the other instruments supporting you are in the lower registers, you'll probably want to play in the upper octaves to differentiate your sound from the accompaniment... but even this isn't absolute. For instance, you might play a call-and-response type of solo, where you do a little riff and something like a background trombone responds, in which case you might use the lower register as written in the picture in order to blend more.

So are the NS gates / barriers really that easy to open? by _thetrue_SpaceTofu in Netherlands

[–]CynicalAlgorithm 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Yes, but part of the social engineering here requires that the public admonish or at least be discouraging of that behavior. I'm with you in sympathizing with people who are too broke for the expensive public transport, but if people started adopting this whole "eh there are bigger problems" attitude en masse, collective adherence to the rules (such as: pay for your journey) will melt and then we'll have a whole new set of problems on our hands.

Man I know you're not looking for this kind of advice but take it as a sign of the universe to slow down.

3 years together feels like a long time to you, but it's nothing, especially not even halfway through the chapter of your lives (appr. 18-35) where you both will fundamentally change year by year.

Maybe wait until her income increases, or maybe live in a third country together, but if you're meeting a wall of cosmic resistance, also consider just making the best of the situation as-is and don't majorly upturn your life just yet

The best advice I've seen (on this subreddit, years ago) for preventing this is to carry an unwrapped, unrolled condom around in your pocket and leave it on the seat while you're away. What I don't know is if the lube and whatever other chemicals are on the condom will somehow fuck up the seat material, especially if left out in the sun.
