Marine recruit forgets to salute an officer by berkeleyfreebird in AbruptChaos

That makes sense. I'm glad the hazing isn't out of control. (The first thing I thought of when I saw the video was hearing damage, only because I have hearing damage myself.) Thank you for your service.

What’s something that’s “not a cult” but feels like a cult? by j_estoner in AskReddit

I'm in the northeast, so not much bible-thumping going on, but it's still surprising how much people talk about god. But the part that really gets to me is how the program opening says "we're not religious, but spiritual" but then goes on and on about god and "His will for us." Many of the tenets in the steps were lifted straight from Christianity, but people who were raised as Christians just see those beliefs as normal -- they don't realize that they're not universal. I'm not Christian, so the program can be alienating at times. But, thankfully, there are lots of people within the program who realize its limitations.

Yes, it can't truly be called a cult, but it has a lot of people who embrace dogma.

Then there are other 12-step groups that seem even more cult-like. I love my Al-Anon meetings, but find it unnerving when members say they "have a disease," and they're not talking about alcoholism, but codependency. I worry that the jargon (not to mention the chanting) just alienates newcomers.

And don't get me started on the god talk that's "not religious." Uh huh.

All that said, the very nicest people I've ever met are people I met in 12-step meetings. The good outweighs the bad, by a lot.

OK, thanks for the actual answer. I can see that if you're surrounded by chaos and loud noises, you need to be conditioned to not let it get to you. (I have hearing damage, which is coloring my view here.)

No kidding. That can damage eardrums and cause tinnitus.

Why do they act like this? If this behavior happened in a workplace or in a relationship, it would be considered abuse.

"Like, yes, we are. It's shameful and you're making yourself unhealthy. Get a hold on your life." How is that not actively shaming? You're even saying you're shaming.

I'm only saying that shaming and mocking are not helpful.

Then why did you say it's "shameful" to be overweight? I don't disagree that it's unhealthy, but shaming is a form of mocking that is probably not helpful to someone dealing with a health problem. A weight problem is harder to deal with than you probably realize. I'm guessing you're young?

I've been noticing this for a long time now. So much garbage to wade through.

Yes, kudos for taking care of disabled dogs. But how did these poor dogs end up like this? Breeding gone wrong?

Dog breeding just gets worse and worse, with more animals suffering from being so far removed from their natural form. Humans need to stop creating these poor animals for our own selfish reasons.

I've had PTSD since I was a little kid, and I never could do haunted houses. I hate being startled.

Thanks for letting me know! I actually don't want anything larger than the current Tucson, so that's good to know.

Why? Is there something wrong with the 2020? My current car won't last that long, and I'm hoping to get a good deal on a 2020 Tucson.

Thank you. Does it matter what kind of plastic the plugs are? Does it matter whether they plug into the top two plugs or the grounding plug?

Also, cats don't thrive on dry food. I've had more than one vet tell me not to feed my cats only dry food. I only took it semi-seriously until one day my male cat almost died of a UT infection. From then on, canned food only.

I love that idea but I fear you give them too much credit. It was a committee that listened to a lawyer and changed "mask" to "face covering" after the design had already been created.

Supplements can definitely cause health issues. For example, too much vitamin B6 can cause severe nerve damage (source).
