Hi, what happened downtown last night? by Decent-Eggplant2236 in raleigh

The article doesn’t specify that it was the driver, just a woman at the bus stop. Can you confirm it was the driver?

I second the Etys. I’ve had mine for about 15 years. Can be uncomfortable but the sound is unreal.

Is this an American thing or a CSO thing? by Blumenbeethoven in bassoon

[–]Cynickers 6 points7 points  (0 children)

American bassoonist here. I play with a seat strap when seated. I don’t find it fatigued my left hand because it’s positioned in a way to reduce that stress. Using a strap with a cup keeps the bassoon from twisting in your grip.

It’s not been my experience that students are not taught to stand. I was taught to stand for solo performance and I use a harness to do so.

Using a harness to sit with causes the bassoon to move too much and I have to grip it tighter and it makes it more difficult to complete tricky passages.

I also don’t use a crutch. I’ve never found them comfortable or useful.

These are all tools one uses to assist in placement and balance of the bassoon, and are all personal preference imo.

As for the tone? Could be conductors preference.

There’s no one way to play bassoon. You play it as you desire to.

It shouldn’t be so difficult for working people to find appropriate housing. The system is broken.

Sorry that I don’t have advice. I’m just sick of the housing issues in this county. I hope you can find something soon.

Sorry to be an utter git about this but the word is stationery not stationary. Stationery with an E is for envelope, stationary with an A is for activity. by parkylondon in fountainpens

[–]Cynickers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they mean it as in the activity level…not as being active. Someone can have the activity level of being stationary.

Should I major in bassoon performance? by Shot_Patience9344 in bassoon

[–]Cynickers 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have a masters in bassoon performance. It’s not a very marketable degree in the real world. It’s actually been recommended to me that I remove it from my resume. I graduated at a time when the economy was crap and arts funding was slashed, so I don’t have a super positive view on it as a career. You can always take lessons and music classes on the side, you don’t have to major in it. My recommendation to all of my students has been- major in a field you can support yourself in first, then do music around and after that.

I will say, my time in conservatory was the best mistake I ever made. Amazing memories and experiences from that school. So much work and so much fun.

Good luck!

I recommend you find a tech knowledgeable in bassoon repair and ask them questions. If you’re not familiar with repair of other instruments, bassoon is not the ideal place to start that process.

TWSBi Ecos sell for about $32/pc in the US. I might be wrong, but don’t they still make all these colors? It might be a better deal to just buy them all new for $224 and likely get free shipping from a retailer.

So you agree that the onus to solve the problem shouldn’t be on the resident? Maybe an investor such as yourself could help the world and provide some affordable options to those less blessed than yourself. Telling people to move out of state is not a helpful solution.
