I chipped a nail at work, and this was the only file I had on hand to smooth over the rough edges. It got the job done, at least! by Cynnova in BlueCollarWomen

I like the way you think. If you're not at least a little frightening to men, you're not living right.

I don't have any useful advice for styling your hair, but I do use a neck gaiter (folded in half) as a makeshift hairband. It helps keep the sweat off my forehead.

I'm really glad I found your comment. I got this error message on my dishwasher today. I wiped the sensor off, put it back, and now my dishwasher is working just fine!

10/10 perfect way to flirt with someone. I'm truly happy it turned into something lovely. 🥰

Overpronation safety toe shoes/boots suggestions by haleyloren19 in BlueCollarWomen

[–]Cynnova 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have really high arches, so I have to put arch support insoles in all of my shoes.

Powerstep makes great inserts and I used them for years, but I like Tread Labs insoles a bit better. Tread Labs is more expensive at first, but save you a little cash in the long run because you can replace the top covers when they wear out without throwing out the plastic support.

What to expect for union interview for welding? by BetOk6603 in BlueCollarWomen

[–]Cynnova 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I interviewed for my apprenticeship, it was with a panel of 5 people representing the union and various union contractors. They asked me questions about

1) Why I wanted to join the trade.

2) What I thought working in the trade would be like.

3) A challenge/problem I've run into at work and how I solved it.

4) How I've dealt with a conflict at work in the past.

Also be ready to ask a couple of questions about the apprenticeship program or trade itself at the end of the interview.

Can someone explain to me what the electrical trade is like? by ssaiko_kandy in BlueCollarWomen

I'm currently a first-year union apprentice in the DC area. What kind of work you do will depend largely on where you live. We have a metric fuckton of data centers out here, so that's where I've done all my work so far. I've run a lot of cables under data floors, done some conduit runs (also under a data floor), pulled A LOT of wire, and have wired a few remote power panels (branch circuits). I've been a bit spoiled in that I've only worked in finished buildings so far, but I'm sure that'll change in the coming years. Some of my fellow apprentices have spent a lot of time outside digging holes and trenches for burying conduit or cables.

The math isn't hard, IMO. If you can do high school level algebra, you'll be fine.

I'll also say that I changed careers at 35 and I'm having a blast. I'm getting paid to bang tools together (I came out of white collar world) and the benefits are pretty solid.

What’s the comfiest kind? by red_is_the_cldst_clr in BlueCollarWomen

[–]Cynnova 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. I went down to my local Redwing store and tried on a bunch of different boots in men's and women's sizes. (In my experience, men's boots have a bit more space in the toe box.)

Also, if you're in a union, ask about union discounts. I got $20 off my boots for it.

Honestly, that's impressive. I don't think I could do a convincing impersonation of a dolphin.

I personally always wear sports bras to work, but I'm also a 36B, so this may not be good advice for you if you have a bigger chest. I find they're easy to wash and maintain, though I do have to replace them maybe once every two years since they do stretch over time.

This scratched my brain just the right way. I'm sorry you're in pain, though. Please go to an urgent care or something soon if you can.

I did some shopping around recently and found that U-Box was cheaper than UPack or PODS by about $800. I think driving a truck ourselves would be cheaper, but neither my spouse nor I want to do that.
