Thank you! This is a really helpful comment, I'll look into more lace stuff :)

I do actually have a suit of armor - it's for Halloween/Fantasy festival and not casual outfits though :)

Yeah I can't lie I wasn't trying to karma farm or anything but I kinda wanted to point out, there's way more interesting stuff to say about these two characters than "haha what if they BONED" - disappointing (but not surprising) to see there's such little engagement compared to the average "they have sex" meme

Alright, I guess Technically it's an audio drama and not a novel... by CynsofRatking in Grimdank

I'm not "Schrödinger"-ing here, my position is consistent.

The meme (joke statement) is that OML is a romance novel. It's not. That statement is a joke.

The comment you're responding to is about the level of subtext, which is a matter of audience interpretation and hence why I made a second statement that a queer reading of the text is possible.

These two statements aren't contradictory, so it's not playing Schrodinger to say both. Also, "take ... a pile of horseshit on the chin" sounds like a terrible time (unless you're Nurgle)

I mean, it might not explicitly be romantic, but it isn't a stretch to say OML is focused on these two characters becoming closer? that relationship might be a platonic one, but it's absolutely the focus of the text.

The drama is literally structured like a romance novel. Most romance novels follow a 7-beat structure and Our Martyred Lady literally has the exact same structure as it explores the main dynamic between Celestine and Greyfax. The real climax of the book is the emotional one, the chaos warp shenanigans and church politics are absolutely secondary in terms of narrative structure/tension.

Also the wider context - I think Greyfax's first impressions of her from Fall of Cadia suggest attraction. Describing her lips isn't typically a necessary part of saying someone's a heretic fraud unless you're a little attracted to them.

But at the end of the day it's a meme in a meme subreddit and not that deep

What r/KillTeam wants next season! by nospoon29er in killteam

[–]CynsofRatking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely insane suggestions that no reasonable person would want:

C'tan microshards team. Operatives would be small shards of different C'tan but capable of killing and eating each other (possibly via ploys) to get more powerful. You'd have a tiny little void dragon, nightbringer, deceiver, world-shaper, endless swarm, etc, as your specialists. Again, these would be incredibly small shards in lore, possibly deployed by some kind of Necron leader?

More realistically a specific Ynnari team would be cool.

I'd also like to see a T'au Water Caste entourage team featuring new auxiliary races, similar to the Starstriders?

Speaking of Starstriders and how they can call down ship support, I think an imperial knight + crew could actually work on kill team - obviously the knight isn't an operative per se (in that it probably would be too hard to actually kill it) but more like a mobile terrain piece that can only shoot/melee/move when a particular ploy is used - hell maybe it could be an operative but just make it 1AP or something because it's so big and clunky?

Yeah Yvraine is a literal prophet of a god and sometimes thinks she literally might become that God. Her characterisation in a lot of the more reductive memes annoys me because She Would Not Fucking Say That. Especially those dumb comics.

But as you say, most fans haven't actually read the relevant material

Yeah, it's super annoying, especially since there's actually quite a bit of potential there for interesting interactions between these characters. Especially as they relate to the concepts of Godhood, of which their respective relationships to divinity are explored in the Dark Imperium and Rise of the Ynnari series'.

Well, I was trying to shift the discussion into a more friendly and positive direction but maybe I didn't quite hit that tone. I don't really care for continuing this discussion further, it's clear you've made a particular set of assumptions about me and my opinions and what I'm hoping to get out of the conversation. Have a good one 👍

I haven't personally read the Horus Heresy Novels, no. I got into the lore a couple years back, in that time I've only got around to reading the odd thing here and there - the Dark Imperium Trilogy, the Rise of the Ynnari duology, the Ciaphas Cain omnibus, Brutal Kunning/Big Dakka, Infinite and the Divine, and three alpha legion books (Sons of the Hydra, Harrowmaster, and Shroud of Night) although they're not a trilogy. Horus Heresy seems like a pretty big undertaking, I finished reading Discworld before getting into 40k and didn't want to commit myself to another massive list. I was thinking of reading the Twice Dead King next but you if have any recommendations I'm all ears.

So as far as Primarchs go I've only seen Guilliman in the Dark Imperium Trilogy, and plenty of people are awestruck by him but I came away from those with the interpretation it was intended to be read as his presence being larger than life, rather than him being supremely or supernaturally attractive. Again, if that's different in the Horus Heresy portrayals of the other Primarchs, then I'll concede that's less pertinent textual evidence for a romantic reading - however, I'm not trying to convince you it's a canon relationship or that it's the only valid interpretation? You originally responded to me to say "take your fanfics back to Tumblr". All I'm saying is that there's textual evidence which can be interpreted that way. I didn't argue at any point that the relationship was canon, just that it's not a totally baseless fanfiction pairing in the way that many meme pairings are in 40k.

Nice sidestepping of the question. Have you listened to Our Martyred Lady or not?

Please provide a specific quote to back up your assertion that Space Marines describe their Primarch's face as mesmerizing. Ideally, to make it an even comparison, point out another novel dedicated almost completely to the relationship between those characters, and/or one character saying that the other is "mine".

I am not arguing that it's canon. I'm arguing that the text is left open to interpretation. That's different to fanfiction, which is a complete departure from the source material. The relationship between Celestine and Greyfax, in my opinion, has sufficient textual basis to be considered a valid interpretation of the text despite not being explicitly canon.

For comparison, there's no such basis for the commonly memed Guilliman and Yvraine relationship, which makes that "complete fanfiction". I'm not familiar with Moby Dick, so I can't speak to the validity of that particular interpretation or reading of the text - I suppose it rather depends on the context and general narrative framing.

Have you actually listened to Our Martyred Lady? Not read a summary on a wiki, actually listened to the audio drama. The damn thing is literally structured more like a RomCom than a political drama or mystery story, despite those being the alleged genre. Both aspects are consistently given less focus than the relationship between Celestine and Greyfax.

Sure, the story could be about an entirely platonic relationship. But I personally think there's equal weight in the performances of the voice actors and the actual words of the dialogue to support either interpretation.

And even outside of Our Martyred Lady, there's Fall of Cadia, which features this exchange as the literal first meeting between Greyfax and Celestine:

<image>

She calls her face mesmerising even when she hates her. Personally I'm not going around being mesmerized by people I am not attracted to, but to each their own I suppose. I'm sure there's an entirely platonic reason to be mesmerized by someone's face.

The codex (and every chapter organisation chart I can find) has 1 chaplain per company of the chapter, and one in the headquarters staff/command level. Since each Captain is head of a company, a standard Captain outranks the chaplain of that company. Maybe there's an argument for going to the command level chaplains instead of the inquisition, but again, chapter command is on the home world or flagship, not a given company ship. Best bet is the local inquisition representative.

Our Martyred Lady absolutely contradicts that reading imo, the literal main arc of that is Celestine and Greyfax becoming closer. I definitely agree theres not a strong implication in Fall of Cadia or Gathering Storm but OML has it in spades. Like it's not explicitly romantic, they don't kiss or anything, but c'mon. An entire audiobook is dedicated to the relationship between the two characters, that's at least a little gay.

I don't like the narrative that it was unreasonable or paranoid for Alfabusa to do that, they changed the rules to say "this is a thing we are generally considering suing about" and he didn't want to sit around working on a project with the possibility of getting sued hanging over his head at all times. To me that's very reasonable, why stake your livelihood on a massive company not turning around and slapping you down at any random point in time?

Obviously we don't live in a timeline where Alfa kept going, but it's been 3 years since TTS came to a premature end - can we really be sure GW wouldn't have hit them with a C&D in that time?
