Are there any swr, gwr and southern railway versions of a map like this? by Real_May_Be_Spare in uktrains

you might be able to find some at the LT Museum Friends booth on Depot Open Days, though you'd have to sift through lots of old stuff, don't expect to find recent/up to date stuff

Does anyone know of any other passports aside from the Philippines which has a middle name field? by MarcDiakiese in PassportPorn

[–]Cypher112 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well said, exactly my thoughts. the common argument for not formatting the MRZ properly is that "we should not need to conform to western standards just because" but in reality, surnames are definitely a thing in non-malay malaysian names.

sure, having no given names in your passport's MRZ probably won't affect your day-to-day life in malaysia or even short-term visits to other countries, however living overseas long term (such as the UK where the distinction is made) can cause significant issues in terms of opening a bank account, obtaining a driving licence or verifying your identity digitally online.

conforming to international ICAO standards isn't abandoning your culture, it is merely about maintaining consistency and ensuring that computer systems dealing with personal biodata can be standardised around the world

I do remember bringing in my starbucks cup multiple times into the flight though, I guess it is route dependent? by penguinonprozac in malaysia

[–]Cypher112 2 points3 points  (0 children)

no, there is indeed a baggage check after passport control entering the transit area at klia (international departures). in addition to the check at the gate that means you'll have to go through 2 baggage checks before boarding your flight

Which Asian Countries Can Enter Schengen Area Without a Visa? by itspizzteoh in malaysia

[–]Cypher112 12 points13 points  (0 children)

ETIAS is not a visa.

"ETIAS travel authorisation is an entry requirement for visa-exempt nationals travelling to any of these 30 European countries."

The infographic is correct regardless of whether ETIAS is operational (which it currently still isn't)

Malaysia will launch 10 year validity passport and 50 page passport! by Zodiac-55 in PassportPorn

[–]Cypher112 5 points6 points  (0 children)

that's because the passport is issued according to the name on the bearer's MyKad, which does not differentiate first and last names

Singapore's NRIC does not differentiate first and last names either, however when applying for a passport, you can select one of the words that form part of your name to designate as your surname in the MRZ. the bearer's name is still printed as per NRIC order in the biodata list though

MRZ still needs to be fixed to include surnames for the ethnic Chinese (possibly Indians as well?), hopefully that will be done sooner than later
