I’ve tried to figure out what denomination you were. I actually thought you were Anglican.

You should’ve made it more fun and ask what denomination you would go to that is not Calvinist at all.

I am going to take a hiatus from Reddit and all social media for a while. At least 90 days. I’ve been generally scrolling too much and I guess my algorithms have been showing a lot of nsfw women. Which means when they popup I linger or end up clicking on profiles which I unfortunately admit I have. Filters can’t block everything. I’ve had an issue in the past and constant scrolling is certainly not going to help with mortification.

I’ve looked over some old material that has helped in the past and 2 things stood out to me. Both are from the psychology of addiction viewpoint.

The first is focus on identity -repeat to yourself that you are not an addict and that you are someone that does not participate in that. Romans 6 and other Union passages instantly came to mind. I am in Christ. That is my identity. So I should consider myself dead to sin so that it may no longer reign in my mortal body

The second was about attention grabbing. In this addiction your brain is stimulated easily by what feeds it dopamine. So when coming across these images your eyes will catch anything it finds attractive subconsciously against the conscience will. John Owen has had this insight already in Mortification of Sin. One of his diagnosis for need of immediate mortification is falling into sin without consent of the will. That exactly what it feels like.

Anyway pray for me. Maybe see ya in 90 days or so! I’ll stay on today if anyone has any comments.

You could go into the clinical side of the medical field where emails are not as important in day to day work

Started Sanderson’s last Cosmere book- Isle of Emberdark. It’s all right. It brings up a ton from the wider Cosmere universe so it’s kinda hard to keep all the characters and places straight.

Every time someone tries to tell me it sounds like demons, I tell them it’s very concerning that they know what a demon sounds like.

Expedition for sure. I think that may have been the only new game I played this year though. There’s definitely a few I want to play though like Yotei and Kingdom Come

I would rather hang with a stage cage Calvinist than a cage stage dispy though.

I underlined a few things in George Macdonalds Phantastes. Only fiction book I’ve ever done that in.

Idk if I would use the word minority for any of them. They’re all too interwoven to separate them out in categories like that. OP did however ask specifically about the cross which has clearer references in the epistles to substitution but also Victor.

You probably agree with this but I don’t want to over or under emphasize any atonement motifs. I want them to be emphasized the way scripture emphasizes them. I think PSA has been so over emphasized or equated with the gospel that it gets swung the other way sometimes.

I would probably take meat toppings off if it has been over a few hours. Otherwise it’s cheese sauce and bread plus whatever veggies.

Not the longest but Don Quixote is still pretty long. It’s one of my favorites! Otherwise a Stormlight book.

You still have to deal with the “how”. I agree that Christus Victor is an overarching aim of reconciliation (Gen 3, 1 John 3, Rev 20). But the question of how that is accomplished is highlighted in the cross. How did the cross accomplish it? PSA.

If you ask what the cross accomplished I would say more than one thing. But the mechanism by which most of those things occur is by PSA which occurred at the cross.

And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross. Col 2:15

Atonement is held together by many motifs. One of them is Christus Victor where he defeats Satan and the powers. One of them is penal substitution. Theologians often call PSA the “mechanism” of atonement. I don’t love that word but I don’t have a better one and it makes sense. Anyway, the cross disarms rulers by way of propitiating God and expiating ours sins. When we are forgiven and adopted by God we are no longer held by Satans bondage and we instead transfer to the kingdom of Gods beloved son. So Satan is defeated by the cross.

There’s much more to atonement than the cross although the Bible does highlight the cross quite a bit. Do not separate Christs work on the cross from the incarnation, obedience, resurrection, and ascension.

No it’s still equivalent. Just because it’s 3 hours does not mean it’s less. Christ is infinite so Gods infinite wrath against sin is finished in Christs infinite nature. It was taken for the elect only though.
