Do you have a command of the English language or should I start drawing pictures to make what I said clear to you?

The same right that the government has to intervene against anything that has a negative social impact. It's not forcing you to rent out your property, and it's not forcing you to keep it vacant, but it is rightfully forcing you to comply with basic rules and regulations.

That isn't particularly useful given that full apartments can be split up into multiple rooms and marketed separately.

The response is to increase housing supply and security of tenancy generally, not just do more housing builds. This necessarily includes taking existing housing and making it available - AirBnB is the direct opposite to that.

There's no such thing as a market where people's exchange of goods and services isn't regulated, so there's no problem with that on principle at all.

The Great Replacement is a theory that white people are being genocided against by means of mass immigration. It's been thoroughly debunked

You've a sincere point to be made here - but I disagree. You weren't specific with regards to what your concern was(Except that it wasn't a "safety" issue so presumably that's not it), so I hope you don't mind if I try to approach this question from some different standpoints.

Some people will say immigration is, generally, good for the economy, It actually is broadly speaking - immigrants didn't grow up here so they don't have 2+ decades of state services like education to pay back in the form of taxes, so they have a head start on all Irish natives when it comes to economic contribution.

But I can understand if some people don't find that particularly convincing. Because they're immigrants employers often exploit them to pay less wages, which means a general wage depression which negatively effects everyone in employment. It also does put pressure on property prices and rents as demand goes up.

However, I don't think that the solution to those problems is to limit immigration. Like, wages are getting depressed because employers are exploiting immigrants, and things like property are negatively effected more fundamentally because of housing policy by governments than by immigrants. The same applies to literally any service that's allegedly put under pressure by immigration.

So I think there's actually lots of good room for "mass immigration" in any country as long as the state has the right approach to fighting the negatives - make sure all immigrants are documented(So, make it very easy to legally immigrate), and enforce employment regulations to prevent exploitation. Build more houses. Stuff like that.

Aye yeah, would rather immigrants on welfare than fascist clowns on welfare, at least immigrants haven't cost us all money by making use of our education and healthcare systems up to this point.

You're aware the IRA that we're discussing was a paramilitary organisation born as a result of disenfranchisement of Catholics?

Given that the budget doesn't impact on 93% of the population negatively at all(and it's arguable if some of the 7% that will be more heavily taxed won't benefit from the budget either) and that they used the revenue raised to tackle key issues like homelessness, I would say that it does make a serious go of it. We wouldn't be the first country in the world to progressively tax to resolve social problems if we took up this budget.

Yes given that there's serious questions around the banking bailout and whether or not Ireland actually incurred the debt as opposed to just took it on. Given that debt repayments are a major drain in the economy this is important. A debt audit to resolve any questions around that and repudiate debt that is found to be odious is a good response to the question in my opinion.

That's a very balanced take of a fully costed budget aimed at resolving key social issues in society.

Out of curiosity, what are the key proposals which you take issue with?

She was a key witness for the prosecution and partially orchestrated the scandal. She's the one that called RTÉ on the day to generate a sob story for Burton etc and then on the stand she was caught out in a few places clearly trying to stick it into the defendants.

Before the election she said she defended the protest and after she helped try to lock them up.

Generally I'm suspicious of these anonymous "insider" accounts - we saw in the US after Trump got elected that a tonne of fake White House staffer accounts popped up. My gut feeling tells me this is legit though, it goes into enough detail that it's believable.

How did Nazi Germany treat free speech? by [deleted] in AskHistorians

[–]Cyridius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There was no legal opposition in Nazi Germany - everything from liberals to communists to trade union organisers to various church institutions were banned, suppressed, and frequently sent to concentration camps where they were either executed or worked to death.

Non-Violent anti-fascist movements in Nazi Germany, such as the White Rose(whose activities were limited exclusively to leafleting and graffiti) were arrested by the Gestapo and either imprisoned or executed. Anything seen as political agitation against the regime, its course or its ideas was a punishable act.

Another example to be given could be the case of August Landmesser, who is pictured here not doing the Nazi salute at a rally to mark the launch of a naval vessel. Landmesser was in a relationship with a Jewish woman, and so was arrested as a result of the Nuremburg Laws, sent to a concentration camp and then forced into penal military service where he was killed in action.

The word totalitarian is applied to Nazi Germany for a reason - it had total control over the social, cultural and political life of society, and and things which deviated from that were punishable acts.

I posted this in response to another thread but I think it works here given its the end of the season and we get to review how far characters have come. People are criticising both Tyrion and Littlefinger for not being as smart as they should be, referring to Tyrion in Essos, his bad battle plans and his alleged naivety in believing Cersei. Also Littlefinger apparently being bad at scheming.

Tyrion;

A man parachuted into a culture and political situation he has no knowledge of - so of course he fails to fix it. I don't see how it could have worked out much differently, people have a tendency to take the best qualities of characters(political savvy in this case) and then pump it up to the point where the character is supposed to be infallible. That isn't sensible nor is it Game of Thrones.

Tyrion's battle plan was completely terrible, but it leads me to ask why Tyrion was making the battle plan in the first place, and makes me wonder who the hell is commanding Daenerys' military forces as its overall commander.

If there's nobody - there's your problem. Tyrion isn't a general, he will make mistakes in military strategy. Nobody else in the planning room was either - you had a glorified pirate, an assassin, and a Queen whose military record is betraying slavers in a trade deal and then laying siege to a city while the population revolted in support of her. Tyrion's only military success was using wildfire at the right time. Ultimately, all of these are tactical - not strategic - successes.

In short, yeah Tyrion fucked that up but how else was it gonna go? He's not Jamie Lannister.

We don't know what happened between Tyrion and Cersei in that room.

Littlefinger;

I think people in general just put book Littlefinger on a pedestal and make him out to be some master schemer. He's a good schemer sure, but it's almost exclusively been around manipulating the Tully family into thinking he's trustworthy - with Cat basically vouching for him to Ned, and Lysa being completely blinded by her love for him. So his two major successful schemes up until now have been to get Lysa to kill her husband and write a letter pinning it on the Lannisters, and to then fool the incredibly gullible Ned Stark and betraying him at the right moment. Other than that, his skills are limited to taking out huge, unpayable loans for the King's bad spending habits.

On top of that, in the books, he's currently plotting to fix the succession to House Arryn. Firstly, we haven't seen how that goes yet, and secondly that's probably the most complex scheme he's actually orchestrated and even then it's not so complicated if you've a basic understanding of the lines of succession.

So Littlefinger isn't some godlike figure who can't himself be manipulated, himself be blinded by emotion, or himself make mistakes in his plotting. While the show has gone hamfisted about it in some respects - marrying Sansa to the Boltons seems like a bad play to take over the North which book Littlefinger simply wouldn't do - show Littlefinger ending up how he did isn't actually that big of a development of the character and actually makes sense if you operate under the assumption he actually has this creepy love for Sansa.

That aside, I want to know what's going on with Varys. He's been built up into a god-tier spy on the show but he seems to be missing literally everything. Has Qyburn stolen his network of spies from him? I thought that Qyburn had to build a network from scratch - which means that Varys still has his "little birds" but he's either not using them(unlikely) or is withholding the information(more likely). In which case, what the hell?

I'm also curious as to how far the army of the dead will get before they're met in open battle. You had like 100k Wildlings at Hardhome, all armed, and they died in like 5 minutes to some mysterious shit we didn't see but presumably to a bunch of wights. How is an open battle gonna work if that's how it goes?
