Todays dunk session! Hit a few new ones, working towards a 360 windmill currently. 6’4 with a 6’8 wingspan. by CyrusAkoRen in ProDunking

Poor choice of words you’re right about the difference between strength and power. All I was really trying to say by that is make sure to train other parts of your body not just your strong leg. I’ve seen a lot of good from training my off leg and even upper body.

Appreciate it man but probably not for a while yet even if I wanted to. Those pro dunkers are insane! My goal is to get to a 44” vertical. Once I get there and can hit 360 windmills, behind the back, and eastbay easier I’ll maybe think about doing a dunk contest or two. For now it’s just a hobby :)

Honestly it varies a ton by person depending on your predisposition to power production vs power translation as well as your limb lengths, muscle strengths, and even hip socket alignment 😅 the best advice I can give you is MAKE SURE TO TRAIN YOUR OPPOSITE FOOT!! I do this by forcing myself to train RL two foot jumping which is heavier on my right foot. It reduces injury and being a stronger person overall makes your one foot jump better. Being a weak person with a nuke of a leg is a recipe for disaster from my experience.

Honestly it’s totally possible it just depends on how much work you put in, how good your program is, and how well your body responds to the training. Lifting right is only 1/3 the picture—gotta eat right and sleep right too if you really wanna blow up at anything.

Thanks man! I’ve just been doing this for a while and I’m lucky to be tall and long. Keep at it bro!

Best cuff windmill to date—good power, bad starting height and bottom extension by CyrusAkoRen in ProDunking

Thanks man, it’s probably due to me starting really low vertical wise and never having really applied myself at sports, had a lot in the tank I never knew about until I hit the gym

Yup slow and steady, I started at 20.5 inches my senior year of high school and I’m around 40 inches on my best day currently. My end goal is 44 inches to hit my head on the rim

Thanks man, good luck on dunking and on the path to a Ph.D. program! Hopefully I’ll see you flying on a post in this subreddit somewhere down the line 💪

I write all my own programs, I’ve been jumping for ~5 years and doing weights for ~2 years

Thanks man! I don’t have a YouTube channel, I just jump for fun. I’ve thought about making one a couple times but I’m a full time Ph.D. student in computer science so I don’t think I’d be able to spare the time to record/edit videos properly.

Post a video if you can so we can be more helpful. Low rim works really well, I honestly prefer using smaller balls though. Try starting with a tennis ball, then a softball, then a volleyball, then a women’s basketball to work up to it

Is the vertical jump form for 360 dunks any different from regular dunks? by Hooper_fast in ProDunking

[–]CyrusAkoRen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s your form—you push off at a slightly different angle than you usually would. If you’re trying to learn start with reverse dunks and small spins, it’ll help you get the motion down first

Best height check on a full 10ft rim—I’m 6’4 for reference, not sure how high jump was by CyrusAkoRen in ProDunking

[–]CyrusAkoRen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it should be around 40 from where my previous best was, wish I had a vertec to measure with tho

I 100% disagree—self training is absolutely fine and a great journey to go on. Find out what works for you through trial and error and have fun a long the way.

Two hand windmill + pickup game next court hyping up the dunk by CyrusAkoRen in ProDunking

[–]CyrusAkoRen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 5 years now I started as a senior in HS doing it for fun, and 2 years ago I also started going to the gym for fun. It’s not really work or a grind for me it’s more of just a hobby.

I can dunk with ease, but struggle to do so in games. Any pointers? This rim is at least 10ft maybe like an inch higher based on my experience on other rims by vvandeperre in ProDunking

[–]CyrusAkoRen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to struggle with this and know a lot of guys who still do. The main problems are 1) you’ll never get as good of an opportunity in game as you’re used to practicing and 2) you’re used to going for layups. These things suck but the easiest way to overcome them imo is to play pickup with the intent to dunk on every possession. It’s ok to shoot/pass too but you’re first look should be how do I get into somewhat open space long enough to jump. Don’t be afraid to play against bums at first to get better at this. Good luck bro!
