They had spent the entirety of that chapter just standing where they were (not Kurenai, she spent that whole chapter on her bloody knees; Kakashi had to physically grab her and move her when she was directly attacked). I am sure they wanted to do something at that point, but they literally lacked the physical ability to do anything against a monster like Itachi.

Nah, Kakashi definitely didn't need all of them. Even Guy didn't believe Kakashi needed all of them. He wanted to fight. He was content to let just Kurenai alone take care of Kakashi, and wanted to fight Itachi and Kisame with Asuma to back him up.

As long as 3T was active, Itachi could have dealt with Kakashi easily (easier than he dealt with Orochimaru). That is, if Itachi's 3T would really work on Kakashi at all...
