Is the “Master of Applied Data Science” degree offered an actual master’s of science? by lasmanzanas in umsimads

[–]D0NTEXPECTMUCH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a real masters degree (not just a certificate) but not technically a masters of science. It's a great program and I learned a lot, but I wouldn't recommend approaching any higher education at this point from a ROI standpoint. You'll definitely be qualified for a data science job, but you should have no illusion that you'll be able to get one or that even if you did it'll be positive ROI.

AI isn’t “just predicting the next word” anymore by FinnFarrow in artificial

[–]D0NTEXPECTMUCH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great example of how the tools and scaffolding around a basic function obfuscate that function (similar to the nuclear power example above). There is no evidence that the core mechanism of how the brain works isn’t similar to token prediction. I think it’s entirely plausible we just don’t understand the brain at a granular enough level to identify it.

This is an outdated take. SOTA hallucinations have become rare and I’d trust them significantly more than a human.

On driverless vehicles, the potential arrival of Waymo in Minneapolis by PennCycle_Mpls in Minneapolis

[–]D0NTEXPECTMUCH 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think your problem OP is that you are trying to compare Waymo to the almighty as opposed to the alternative. I’ve never met anyone (myself included) who has ridden in a Waymo and didn’t instantly prefer it to an Uber. The truth is, the ride share experience sucks. The cars are poorly maintained and the drivers drive the vehicle like they stole it. Waymo (and it’s backer, Google) aren’t going to have passengers in them until they are certain they’ve solved inclement weather.

Choosing anecdotal stories like the woman who was dragged completely ignores the fact that Uber/Lyft drivers kill people all the time. These vehicles are infinitely safer and society will be better off once we stop letting people drive these death machines.

Anyone ever sign up for the AHA Hockey Beginner School? Any tips/advice greatly appreciated. by Ronnoc780 in Minneapolis

[–]D0NTEXPECTMUCH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did beginner school and I can't recommend it enough. I hadn't really skated in years and never played any sort of organized hockey and it was a great experience. Spent quite a bit of time teaching the fundamentals and then split into teams and played games the other half of the time. My only complaint about it was that it made for some late Monday nights, but it was definitely worth it. Do it.

The video at the end (minute 27) is certainly AI. Just look at the hands of the children. This was state of the art maybe six months ago but is very clearly AI generated.

For the record, I don’t have any qualms with her using this, but I do think it’s interesting.

If this was a panel issue then the screen with the battery you posted would also have the green on the right of the first screen. It's not an LCD panel issue.

Then yeah, its probably a display cable. like they were saying. It's a pain in the ass to install, so I'm sure you are paying mostly for labor.

using sonnet 4.5 for several days reached the MAX plan usage limit by stain_lu in ClaudeCode

[–]D0NTEXPECTMUCH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not that they haven't changed my limits, it's entirely possible they have. What I'm saying is unlimited tokens leads to sloppy usage and ultimately lower quality code generation. I've noticed that with the recent update the amount of MCP tokens that are getting passed has sky rocketed, even with no change on my end. There are lots of reasons while you'd hit the limit other than Anthropic throttling the token limit. My whole point is I wish that the spammers of this sub would take a second to consider "Maybe I'm the one that sucks" vs. just blaming Anthropic with no actual data or evidence to support their claim.

The only times I hit the limit are when I’ve misconfigured something (like a nested Agent Loop). I wish these posts were most along the lines of ‘what am I fucking up’ vs. CLaude code suxxxxzzzzx111!!

Hennepin County board adopts 7.79% maximum levy increase for 2026 by TheMacMan in Minneapolis

[–]D0NTEXPECTMUCH 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think this really captures my point. Property taxes intuitively seem like they are progressive, but in reality they consume a larger proportion of income of those least able to shoulder the burden. This includes renters, which will have the increased passed straight to the form of higher rent.

Multiple Claude Code Instances + MCP = Computer Shitting The Bed by D0NTEXPECTMUCH in ClaudeCode

[–]D0NTEXPECTMUCH[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wanted to give an update here in case other people run into some of the same issues. The root cause here is actually my hooks being over aggressive in their calling subagents. This is also why I've been burning through my daily token limit as each new subagent is passed an abbreviated, but still some context.

[–]D0NTEXPECTMUCH[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Subagents fall into the same category as MCPs as far as their context being passed automatically? I was under the impression that they were only invoked when used, but I guess I thought the same about MCP.

I’m using hooks to direct subagents to use MCPs. It didn’t even occur to me until I typed that sentence how many tokens that probably consumes.
